Pokeball IconPunching Glove makes Surging Strikes a non-contact move

Ability and Held Item

Ability Held Item
Unseen Fist Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Punching Glove ImagePunching Glove

Unseen Fist is Urshifu's only Ability and allows it to bypass protection moves such as Protect, Detect, and Spiky Shield when using a contact move.

Punching Glove boosts the damage of Surging Strikes by 10% while also making it a non-contact move. This used to counter any Rocky Helmets or Rough Skin Pokemon that are used to counter Urshifu.

Do note that this means that Surging Strikes no longer bypasses protection via Unseen Fist, but it's other moves like Close Combar or Aqua Jet still do.

Moves Breakdown

Aqua Jet Surging Strikes
Close Combat U-turn

Aqua Jet allows Urshifu to threaten knock outs on low HP opponents with a +1 priority Water STAB attack.

Surging Strikes always hits three times and is used to check opposing leads that rely on Focus Sash, the Sturdy Ability, or Substitute to set up. Since it always lands a critical hit, it also effectively bypasses Defense boost from moves like Iron Defense.

Close Combat is a strong Fighting-type STAB that lowers Urshifu's Defense and Special Defense by one stage after every use.

U-Turn allows for Urshifu to switch out of problematic matchups and bring in a better Pokemon instead.

Water is an offensive Tera option that gives Urshifu Rapid-Strike a damage boost to Surging Strikes and Aqua Jet. This helps it knock out opponents when the attacks would not normally do so.

Poison Tera can also be used as a defensive option on Urshifu. This gives it a lot of extra resistances, most notably Fairy and Grass.

Alternatively, it could use a Stellar Tera Type to also boost the damage of Close Combat, but it in most situations it would still prefer the other two options.

EV Spread and Nature

Full Attack and Speed EV investment ensures that Urshifu Rapid-Strike Style hits as hard and as fast as possible with its moves, while the remaining 4 EVs are placed in Special Defense to slightly boost its bulk.

Other Viable Moves

Swords Dance Increases the Attack stat of Urshifu by two stages. This helps it knock out even the bulkiest of Pokemon.
Drain Punch Does less damage than Close Combat, but doesn't reduce your defenses and heals you at the same time. If combined with Swords Dance, this is an overall better option.

Moves Breakdown

Swords Dance Surging Strikes
Close Combat Fire Punch

Swords Dance raises Urshifu Rapid-Strike Style's Attack by two stages, allowing it to deal higher damage with its dual STAB moves.

Fire Punch rounds off its coverage and has great offensive synergy with Surging Strikes, and also becomes a STAB move once Urshifu terastallizes into a Fire-type.

Moves Breakdown

Surging Strikes Close Combat
Aqua Jet U-turn

Surging Strikes is Urshifu's most important and powerful move, being able to deal huge chunks of damage to most Pokemon if not outright knocking them out.

Close Combat is a powerful secondary STAB option, and is great for burst damage.

Aqua Jet is for outprioritizing opponents, when Choice Scarf's Speed boost is not enough.

U-Turn allows Urshifu to pivot out of the active position and allow a teammate to come in.

How to Use Urshifu Rapid-Strike Style Effectively

Use it Against Focus Sash, Sturdy, and Substitute Users

Urshifu Rapid-Strike Style is a great check to opposing setup sweepers that rely on Focus Sash, the Ability Sturdy, and Substitute since its signature move Surging Strikes always hits three times.

Even if Urshifu can't KO these setup sweepers outright, breaking their sash or Substitute essentially disrupts their strategy.

How to Build a Team with Urshifu Rapid-Strike Style

Urshifu is a great choice for hyper offense teams that require a way to bypass protection moves or Substitute users, or a strong Water-type attacker for a Fire-Water-Grass core.

Sample Singles Team

Lead Attacker Offensive Pivot Special Attacker

Leading with Urshifu allows you to scout the opposing team for sash and substitute users, forcing them out so you can set up with Swords Dance.

Skeledirge serves as this team's offensive pivot and is a great check to opposing setup sweepers thanks to its Unaware Ability.

Mow Rotom provides strong special damage with its dual STAB moves, and synergizes well with Urshifu when faced against opposing Water-types.

Sample Doubles Team

Physical Attacker Special Attacker

Support / Physical Attacker Support / Physical Attacker
Incineroar ImageIncineroar Rillaboom ImageRillaboom

Urshifu Rapid-Strike Style partners well with Kyogre in Regulation G, being able to benefit from its Drizzle Ability that boosts its Surging Strikes.

Along with Urshifu Rapid-Strike Style, Rillaboom and Incineroar make for a powerful Fire/Water/Grass Core that can switch and pivot amongst each other.

Counters for Urshifu Rapid-Strike Style

Outspeed it with a Faster Attacker

Urshifu's mediocre Speed stat means it's easily outsped by faster attackers that can take advantage of its weaknesses.
