Survives a Hydro Pump from Sp. Atk invested Wash Rotom except for in extreme high roll cases.
Able to whittle down opponents with passive damage from Sandstorm and Stealth Rock. Is a great support lead with access to moves such as Yawn and Roar. Also functions well as a Physical Wall thanks to its great bulk. |
With this build, Hippowdon's main role is to set up Sand Storm and Stealth Rocks to deal residual damage and make it easier for follow up attackers to deal with threats.
Hippowdon also learns Whirlwind (a move which forces the opposing Pokemon to switch out) as an egg move, so it is great to use in combination with Stealth Rock and Sand Stream to whittle down the opposing team's HP.

Force Switch moves refers to moves which force the opponent to switch Pokemon, such as Roar and Whirlwind.
Hippowdon has a wide range of versatility in its moves to go along with the Yawn + Stealth Rock combo, including Whirlwind to force the opponent's active Pokemon out, and even healing options.
In particular, Whirlwind is very useful, as it can completely negate and disrupt a wide range of opposing tactics, including Substitute and Baton Pass. These type of strategies are generally completely shut down by Whirlwind. Just having a Whirlwind user on your team can greatly increase your match win ratio.
Hippowdon can learn both Roar and Whirlwind, which are both moves that forcibly switch your opponent. Generally speaking, Whirlwind is the better option, because you will never have to worry about Pokemon with the Soundproof ability.

Take the advantage over other physical walls. Can tie-up opponent's options by Yawning subsequent switch-ins. Can deal damage to Dragon Type Pokemon with Ground Type immunity (through Typing or Ability) with Ice Fang. |
Hippowdon performs well as a Physical Wall to counter other Physical Walls. It can switch in to a Pokemon such as Gyarados, Dragonite or Salamence after they have setup Swords Dance or Dragon Dance, tank a hit, Yawn them and then deal good damage with Ice Fang if they stay in.

1 | Set up Stealth Rock |
---|---|
2 | Make repeated use of Yawn. |
3 | Force the difficult decision of switching out or staying in |
A | Opponent Switches: If the opponent switches they take damage from Stealth Rock and get hit with Yawn, looping them back to Step 3 again |
B | Opponent Stays In: In exchange for Hippowdon taking a hit, you can safely switch to a follow up attacker to deal with them while they sleep |
By using the move Yawn consecutively, you can force your opponent into the difficult decision of staying in and falling asleep the following turn, or switching out to take residual damage and be Yawned again.
By setting up Stealth Rock prior to Yawning the opponent, you create a powerful loop that is difficult to break free from.
Hippowdon can use Yawn to put other Physical Walls to sleep, and then attack them with damaging moves such as Earthquake or Ice Fang. If it Terastallizes into a Grass Type it can also resist Water and Grass Type moves, allowing it to easily tank a Waterfall from Gyarados or Hydro Pump from Wash Rotom.
Hippowdon has good compatibility with Dragon Type Pokemon that have access to Dragon Dance and high damage output. Once the opponent has been put to sleep with yawn, the Dragon attacker is free to set up and sweep. Dragon Typing also resists Water and Grass, two of Hippowdon's weaknesses.
Stealth Rock + Yawn | Stall | Lead Attacker |

Hippowdon | Toxapex | Dragapult |
Hippowdon should be teamed with Pokemon that have good Special Defense to complement Hippowdon's excellent Phsical Defense. As this team primarily focuses on tanking hits and disrupting with Yawn, Hippowdon fits best in a Stall style team with one attacker. It is important that the Pokemon that are in Hippowdon's team can also cover its weaknesses to Grass, Water and Ice.

Hippowdon | Chansey | Dragonite |
By using Taunt you can prevent Hippowdon from using Yawn, Whirlwind, Slack Off and any other status moves, completely disrupting the strategy. Also by utilizing Flying Type Pokemon, you also gain immunity to Earthquake.

Hippowdon is Common in the current meta and not having an answer to it could mean an auto-loss in that matchup. Make sure you have at least one out to the Stealth Rock Yawn loop when considering a new team.
Pokemon | Description |

Breloom | Ranking: ★★★★★
・Can put Hippowdon to sleep with Spore, completely disabling it ・ Sandstorm will knock Breloom out after it survives an attack with Focus Sash, so take caution ▶️Breloom Best Movesets |
Gholdengo | Ranking: ★★★★
・Completely negate status conditions with Good As Gold Ability ・If not holding Air Balloon, will take a lot of damage from Earthquake, so take caution ▶️Gholdengo Best Movesets |
Wash Rotom | Ranking: ★★★★
・Can OHKO with Choice Specs ・Pairs well with other couner, Gholdengo ・Hippowdon may withstand Choice Specs Hydro Pump if it is a Physical Wall Build |
Hippowdon learns Whirlwind as an egg move, so in order to get Whirlwind on Hippowdon, first you need a Pokemon that knows the move. You will then need to make sure Hippowdon has an empty move slot and give it a Mirror Herb.
Finally, set up a picnic with both Hippowdon and the Pokemon that knows the egg move in your party and the move will be transferred to Hippowdon (the other Pokemon still retains its moveset). Unlike previous generations, egg moves can now be transferred regardless of egg group, species or gender.
