Team Cores and Strategy

Arcanine and Ting-Lu

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Fire Icon
Ting-Lu ImageTing-Lu
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Dark Icon Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Ground Icon

Arcanine and Ting-Lu gave the champion a defensive start, with Intimidate reducing the opposing side's Attack stats, and Vessel of Ruin debuffing the Special Attack of all Pokemon on the field except Ting-Lu, which Arcanine does not mind.

Having these two at the forefront afforded the champion opportunities to whittle down the opposing team, or reposition for an advantage.

Flutter Mane and Palafin

Flutter Mane ImageFlutter Mane

Palafin ImagePalafin
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Water Icon

Flutter Mane and Palafin were Paul Chua's primary leads for his Grand Finals bout against Gabriel Agati Medeira. These two Pokemon would immediately apply offensive pressure, as they would have enough firepower to take out a Pokemon by double targetting it. Palafin was also an unpredictable lead, as having it on the field on turn 1 would always make the opponent guess whether or not it will switch out. What Palafin switches out to is also tough to predict, as it can be either one of the Champion's tanky, defense-oriented Pokemon.

Competitive Team Building for Doubles Ranked Battle

Teams Strengths

Paul Chua's European Championship winning team has an efficient balance of offense and defense. Flutter Mane, Roaring Moon, and Palafin would provide consistent sources of damage, while Ting-Lu, Arcanine, and Amoonguss round out the back end of the team defensively.

The team lets the champion play reactively, not solely relying on any singular strategy, but with all six Pokemon being able to work together in any combination.

Arcanine's Extreme Speed was especially useful for picking off low HP Pokemon. It also offers great utility with its Intimidate Ability and Will-O-Wisp, which could burn physically offensive threats.

Physically Offensive Palafin

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Palafin Image

Ability Zero to Hero
Tera Type Pokemon Water Type Icon
Held Item Mystic Water
Moveset Wave Crash
Haze
Jet Punch
Protect

Palafin is a consistent winner of major tournaments, and for good reason. It is powerful and consistent. With its standard set of moves and Held Item, Palafin is always a reliable addition to teams.

Even in Palafin's Zero Form, Palafin is still able to dish out meaningful damage, which Paul Chua showed when he KOd the runner up's Tera Poison Baxcalibur with Wave Crash.

Choice Specs Flutter Mane (MVP)

Ability Protosynthesis
Tera Type Pokemon Fairy Type Icon
Held Item Choice Specs
Moveset Moonblast
Shadow Ball
Dazzling Gleam
Thunderbolt

While limited in its move options while on the field, Choice Specs Flutter Mane packs enough firepower to put opposing teams on the back foot.

Shadow Ball is Flutter Mane's most consistent move, which is able to hit most types for neutral damage. This allowed Paul Chua's Flutter Mane to deal good damage the likes of Tera Poison Baxcalibur, Arcanine, and Amoonguss, who would all otherwise resist its Fairy-type Attacks.

Flutter Mane Movesets and Best Builds

Disruptive Amoonguss

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Amoonguss Image

Ability Regenerator
Tera Type Pokemon Water Type Icon
Held Item Sitrus Berry
Moveset Spore
Rage Powder
Pollen Puff
Protect

Paul Chua's Amoonguss was a consistent problem for his opponents, surviving important turns and putting key Pokemon to sleep. Amoonguss would also work as a cleric for its team, healing its teammates up with its Pollen Puff after they have taken damage, as well as redirecting damage from its teammates.

Amoonguss was often a problem that had to be addressed whenever it was on the board, but with teammates like Arcanine with its Intimidate and Ting-Lu with its Vessel of Ruin, Amoonguss was not gonna be taken off the field easily.

Amoonguss Movesets and Best Builds

Assault Vest Ting-Lu

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Ting-Lu Image

Ability Vessel of Ruin
Tera Type Pokemon Poison Type Icon
Held Item Assault Vest
Moveset Stomping Tantrum
Ruination
Sand Tomb
Heavy Slam

Stomping Tantrum and Heavy Slam are good ways to threaten the likes of Chi-Yu and Flutter Mane, and Ruination is a standard move for Ting-Lu. But what sets Paul Chua's Ting-Lu apart is Sand Tomb.

Sand Tomb allows Ting-Lu to deal incremental damage to tanky Pokemon that would otherwise shrug off Stomping Tantrum and Heavy Slam. Ruination can bring opponents to half health, which means it will take less turns for Sand Tomb to knock them out. This also puts them in a checkmate scenario, where the opposing Pokemon will be losing HP, while being unable to Switch out.

Ting-Lu's Ground typing prevents opponents from switching out with a move like Volt Switch.

Ting-Lu Movesets and Best Builds

Tera Flying Roaring Moon

Ability Protosynthesis
Tera Type Pokemon Flying Type Icon
Held Item Booster Energy
Moveset Acrobatics

Dragon Dance
Protect

Paul Chua's Roaring Moon boosts its Attack stat with its Booster Energy. This allows it to be a menace on the field. With one Dragon Dance, Roaring Moon can sweep through entire teams or clear out low HP Pokemon.

European International Championships Mystery Gift Code Distribution

Similar to Oceania Regional Champion, Gavin Michaels' Palafin which was given out via Mystery Gift Code during EUIC, it is likely that we will get a competitive Pokemon Mystery Gift on this tournament as well. This will most likely be one of EUIC Champion, Paul Chua's Pokemon. As Flutter Mane was the MVP of the European International Championships final, it is likely that Flutter Mane will be the next Mystery Gift distribution.
