Moveset | ・
Spore
・ Clear Smog ・ Giga Drain ・ Foul Play |
Great mixed defenses and dual typing, as well as the Regnerator Ability, make it a great bulky pivot for both offensive and balanced teams.
Although Spore is its main deterrent against defensive Pokemon, Amoonguss can come in on setup sweepers and remove their boosts with Clear Smog.
It's last two moves are for utility. Giga Drain gives it an active form of recovery outside of Black Sludge, while Foul Play allows it to threaten physical attackers by using their own Attack stat against them.
This Amoonguss' build has a Poison Tera Type, which removes its Grass-typing so that it can better wall Fire and Ice-types.
Toxic | A good alternative to Foul Play that allows Amoonguss to stall opposing defensive Pokemon. |
---|---|
Worry Seed | This egg move is another good alternative to Foul Play that shuts down Pokemon reliant on their Abilities, such as Technician Breloom. |
Sludge Bomb | Sludge Bomb can replace Foul Play to give Amoonguss dual STAB and allow it to threaten Fairy-types. |

Moveset | ・
Rage Powder
・ Pollen Puff ・ Spore ・ Protect |
Amoonguss's dual-typing and access to Rage Powder make it a great redirection support in Doubles. It can also heal its ally with Pollen Puff and, since it's classified as an attacking move, is not affected by Taunt.
Spore gives Amoonguss a tool to use against opposing defensive Pokemon and setup sweepers, while Protect lets it scout the opposing team's moves.
Leaf Storm | With 0 Special Attack EVs, Amoonguss can KO Rapid-Strike Urshifu with Leaf Storm, which makes this move very viable. |
---|---|
Clear Smog | Clear Smog gives Amoonguss a way to clear an opponent's Stat changes, making it useful against opposing Dondozo. |
Amoonguss' claim to fame is its great mixed bulk and access to Spore, which allows it to shut down and threaten opposing defensive Pokemon and make them easy setup fodder for its teammates.
The Mushroom Pokemon's great dual typing also makes it a great answer to the very common Water, Fighting, and Fairy-types in the current metagame.
In Doubles, Amoonguss' ability to provide redirection support using Rage Powder makes it an invaluable team in both offensive-oriented and more balanced team compositions.
Amoonguss is very easy to fit into most teams as almost all team compositions appreciate a way to shut down opposing Pokemon with Spore.
In Doubles, Amoonguss is best paired with frai attackers that have trouble setting up on their own and require redirection support.
Lead Attacker | Defensive Pivot | Special Attacker |
---|---|---|
Palafin | Amoonguss | Armarouge |
Palafin requires switching out with Flip Turn to activate its Zero to Hero Ability. Amoonguss is a great pivot as it resists Grass and Electric-types that Palafin is weak to, and it can also threaten opposing setup sweepers with Spore or Clear Smog.
Armarouge is this team's special attacker and helps round off the team's coverage. It also has great synergy with Amoonguss as it can take Fire, Ice, and Psychic-type moves that the Mushroom Pokemon is weak to.
Lead Attacker | Redirection Support |
---|---|
Azumarill | Amoonguss |
Setup Sweeper | Tailwind Support |
Breloom | Corviknight |
Belly Drum Azumarill is a powerful attacker, but it often struggles to setup in the more fast-paced Doubles format. Amoonguss can help it setup safely by redirecting attacks targeted at it with Rage Powder.
Similarly, Breloom appreciates redirection support so that it can safely setup with Swords Dance. Corviknight functions as this team's Tailwind support and has great defensive synergy with Amoonguss.
Despite Amoonguss' great bulk, its lack of reliable recovery move outside of Giga Drain means it's easy to wear down with super effective attacks.
Pokemon that have the Safety Goggles held item equipped are also immune to Spore and Rage Powder, allowing them to take on the Mushroom Pokemon without fear of being put to sleep or redirected.
