Held Item | Mental Herb |
Moveset | ・
Body Press
・ Stealth Rock ・ Spikes ・ Shed Tail |
Orthworm is a solid choice as a Hazards setter, however it is susceptible to Taunt. Equipping it with Mental Herb improves its matchup against Taunt users, however it loses reliable recovery. An alternative to Mental Herb is Sitrus Berry.
Stealth Rock and Spikes both punish the opponent for switching repeatedly. Shed Tail lets a teammate come in with a Substitute protecting it.
Orthworm uses a defensive Fairy Tera Type, as it allows it to resist Fighting and Fire-type Moves.
Iron Defense | Iron Defense works in conjuncton with Body Press, making it more powerful with more Defense boosts. |

Held Item | Leftovers |
Moveset | ・
Body Press
・ Iron Defense ・ Shed Tail ・ Protect |
This build can support its team with Shed Tail and also contribute to offense with Iron Defense and Body Press.
Leftovers gives Orthworm passive recovery which works well with Protect, giving you more Leftovers recovery turns.
Orthworm uses a defensive Fairy Tera Type, as it allows it to resist Fighting and Fire-type Moves.
Helping Hand | Lets Orthworm fulfill its supportive role even more effectively by boosting its ally's damage output |
---|---|
Metal Burst | Orthworm's high Defense stat makes it a suitable user for Metal Burst. |

252 HP, 4 Def | Body Press 168 ~ 200 (81.1 ~ 96.6%) Guaranteed 2-Hit KO |

Item: Choice Specs | Heat Wave 134 ~ 158 (75.7 ~ 89.2%) Guaranteed 2-Hit KO |
Item: Life Orb | Armor Cannon 291 ~ 346 (164.4 ~ 195.4%) Guaranteed OHKO |
Item: Life Orb | Armor Cannon Orthworm Tera Type: 146 ~ 173 (82.4 ~ 97.7%) Guaranteed 2-Hit HKO |
Orthworm may be Physically Defensive, but its middling Special Defense may make it easy to KO especially by Special Fire or Fighting-type Attacks. Boosted Physical Attacks will break through Orthworm's Physical Defenses. Don't hesitate to swtich Orthworm out if it is in danger of getting OHKOd.
Orthworm is best in teams where it has teammates that benefit off of Shed Tail. Fast teammates are also good, as Orthworm is relatively slow. This makes it so the team has a 'Slow Mode' and does not automatically lose to Trick Room.
Because Orthworm is weak to Fire and Fighting (it is immune to Ground thanks to Earth Eater), it is best placed in teams with Pokemon who can cover its weaknesses.
Physical Attacker | Hazard Setter | Physical Attacker |
---|---|---|
Orthworm | Quaquaval | Ceruledge |
Quaquaval has access to Brave Bird which can KO Fighting-types, and STAB Water-type Moves to use against Fire-types. These make Quaquaval a great teammate for Orthworm.
Ceruledge is an excellent recipient of Shed Tail's support. Having Ceruledge behind a Substitute can let it stick around the battlefield for longer and score KOs that can swing momentum in your favor.
Physical Attacker | Supportive Tank |
---|---|
Garchomp | Orthworm |
Physical Attacker | Special Attacker |
Ceruledge | Sylveon |
Garchomp can help Orthworm recover HP with quick Earthquakes that replenish Orthworm's health. Orhtworm can then be free to pass on a Shed Tail Substitute to Ceruledge or Sylveon, both of which are powerful attackers.
Knock out Orthworm before it can make meaningful contributions in a match. It is highly susceptible to Fire and Fighting-type moves, so use these moves to take it out.
