You can give nicknames to Pokemon you got through trading in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV). Read on to learn how to change a traded Pokemon's nickname, and restrictions on renaming Pokemon that have nicknames already.

How to Give Nicknames to Traded Pokemon
1 Nicknaming a Traded Pokemon, First Step - Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV)
Select the traded Pokemon you want to rename in the Pokemon Menu, and select 'Check Summary'.
2 Nicknaming a Traded Pokemon, Second Step - Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV)
In the Summary Menu, press the 'X Button'. Once the nickname screen comes up, enter the name you prefer for your new Pokemon.
Remember, you can only give traded Pokemon a nickname once, so make sure to double-check for any typos or other mistakes.

Your traded Pokemon now has a new name.

Can You Rename Traded Pokemon With Nicknames?

Nicknames of Traded Pokemon Are Unchangeable

Can

Unfortunately, for traded Pokemon that already have nicknames, there is currently no way to change their nicknames whatsoever.

If you do not want to end up trading for a Pokemon that already has a nickname, we recommend using Link Trade instead of Surprise Trade.

With Link Trading, you can trade with friends and ensure that the Pokemon they will trade you does not have a nickname yet.

Meanwhile, Surprise Trading has a higher chance of getting you a Pokemon that's already been given a name by another trainer, This is because you can't see the Pokemon you're trading for until the transaction is over.
