Summary

Pokeball IconLightning Rod gives it immunity to Electric-types and raises its Special Attack by one stage.

Pokeball Icon110 Base Speed allows it to outrun most offensive leads.

Pokeball IconFlying Tera Type gives it Flying-type STAB.

Raichu's Lightning Rod Ability and access to Nasty Plot allows it to run an effective special setup attacking build, with Flying Tera Type allowing it to take on Grass-types that otherwise wall it completely.

Ability and Held Item

Lightning Rod is the best Ability for this build, giving Raichu immunity to Electric-type moves while also increasing its Special Attack by one stage. This makes Raichu a great switch in against opposing Electric-types such as Pawmot and Killowatrel.

Life Orb increases the damage of Raichu's moves by 30% and is the best item for this build so that it can hit harder after setting up Nasty Plot.

Moves Breakdown

Nasty Plot boosts Raichu's Special Attack by two stages, allowing it to hit hard with its main STAB move Thunderbolt. Surf gives it great coverage against Ground and Rock-types, and also allows it to threaten Fire-types Heat Rotom.

Its last move is Tera Blast, which becomes a Flying-type STAB move once Raichu terastallizes into a Flying type and allows it to hit Grass-types for super effective damage.

Best Tera Type

Pokemon Scarlet Violet - Flying Tera Type Pikachu
Flying is the best Tera type for this build to give Raichu immunity to Ground-types while also giving a STAB move that it can use against Grass-type Pokemon.

As a special attacker, a Timid Nature is best so that it can outspeed opposing offensive leads and setup sweepers.

Players can get a Pikachu with a Flying Tera Type until the end of February. This Pikachu also has access to the move Fly, normally not possible for Pikachu to obtain. Give this Pikachu a Thunder Stone to evolve it into a Raichu and you will not have to worry about getting enough Tera Shards to change its Type.
How to Get the Flying Tera Type Pikachu

EV Spread and Nature

Full Attack and Speed EV investment is necessary so that Raichu can hit hard and can outrun slower attackers, with the remaining 4 EVs in Special Defense to round off its bulk.

A Timid Nature ensures Raichu has an effective 178 Speed stat at Lv. 50.

Other Viable Moves

Grass Knot An alternative coverage move against Ground-types that deals more damage against heavier Pokemon such as Hippowdon.

The following calculations take into account Raichu's Offensive EV spread with a Timid Nature, a Life Orb boost, as well as the +2 Special Attack from Nasty Plot.

Summary

Pokeball IconAccess to Fake Out and Helping Hand.

Pokeball IconBase 110 Speed allows it to outrun most offensive leads.

Lightning Rod Raichu is a great offensive lead in Doubles as it can redirect and absorb Electric attacks directed at its partner, increasing its Special Attack by one stage in the process. Key support moves like Fake Out and Helping Hand, as well as Discharge allows it to support its team and deal damage at the same time.

Ability and Held Item

Lightning Rod is the best Ability for this build, giving Raichu immunity to Electric-type moves while also increasing its Special Attack by one stage. This makes Raichu a great switch in against opposing Electric-types such as Nuzzle Pachirisu.

Focus Sash is the best item for this build, allowing Raichu to survive a super effective hit that would otherwise KO it with 1 HP.

Moves Breakdown

Fake Out causes the target to flinch and is useful to interrupt faster attackers and opposing support and defensive leads, while Helping Hand boost the base power of its ally's next move by 50%.

Discharge is an Electric-type STAB move that hits all Pokemon on the field, including Raichu's ally, and has a 30% chance to inflict paralysis. This move is best used when partnered withh a Ground-type Raichu's partner from getting damaged and paralyzed.

Its last move is Tera Blast, which becomes a Flying-type STAB move once Raichu terastallizes into a Flying type and allows it to hit Grass-types for super effective damage.

Other Viable Moves

Thunderbolt A stronger Electric-type STAB move that only hits one target but allows Raichu to partner with Pokemon other than Ground-types.

How to Use Raichu Effectively

Use it as an Offensive Lead

In both Singles and Doubles, Raichu is best used as an offensive lead thanks to its naturally high Speed stat and access to key support moves and Electric-type STAB.

Terastallizing it into a Flying-type also helps it stay on the field against Ground-types while also giving it an important coverage move to use against Grass-types that otherwise wall it completely.

How to Build a Team with Raichu

Raichu is at home in offensive-oriented teams in both Singles and Doubles that require a lead setup attacker or switch-in against opposing Electric-types.

Sample Singles Team

Lead Attacker Offensive Pivot Physical Attacker
Raichu ImageRaichu Gyarados ImageGyarados Roaring Moon ImageRoaring Moon

Leading with Raichu often forces switches due to its naturally high Speed stat, especially against slower defensive leads and against more balanced teams. This allows Raichu to setup with Nasty Plot and deal boosted damage the next turn.

Defensive Gyarados has great synergy with Raichu as it can come in against Ground-types and inflict Intimidate whiile also threatening them with STAB Waterfall. Raichu, in turn, can switch in against Electric-types that threaten Gyarados.

Roaring Moon serves as this team's main physical attacker, with its offensive presence enough to force switches and give it an opportunity to set up with Dragon Dance.

Sample Doubles Team

Offensive Lead Physical Attacker
Raichu ImageRaichu Garchomp ImageGarchomp
Redirection Support Special Attacker
Amoonguss ImageAmoonguss Gardevoir ImageGardevoir

Garchomp is a great partner with Raichu since its immune to Discharge, allowing the latter to freely use the move to paralyze both opposing Pokemon. Raichu, in turn, can terastallize into a Flying-type to avoid Garchomp's Earthquake.

Apart from scouting with Fake Out, Raichu should also use Helping Hand to boost Garchomp's attacks and allow it to potentially KO most Pokemon after a Swords Dance boost.

Amoonguss serves as this team's redirection support and can swap places with Raichu when Garchomp needs Rage Powder support. Gadevoir is this team's Special Attacker and is also immune to Discharge thanks to its Telepathy Ability.

Counters for Raichu

Take Advantage of its Low Defense

Raichu's low bulk holds it back from being full support Pokemon, with even neutral hits dealing significant amount of damage against it.

Powerful setup sweepers that can shrug off its STAB will often force it to switch out or risk getting KO'd.
