Can Taunt to prevent Bulk Up and Swords Dance. Typing resists Grass-type attacks. Can shred Sp. Def with Acid Spray and boost its own Sp. Atk with Nasty Plot. |
Gengar's only ability for Tera Raid Battles is Cursed Body. This has a chance to disable the attack that the Raid Boss used on Gengar.
We also recommend getting a Gengar with a Poison Tera Type because it boosts the damage of its Poison-type moves. As a Special Attacker, a Modest nature would be best.
Best Tera Types: Best Pokemon to Terastallize
Tera Raid EV spreads should lean towards HP and Defense. Max out your HP and Def EVs, while adding the remaining EVs into Sp. Atk. Give it a Shell Bell so that Gengar can heal back its health while using its damaging moves.
Gengar Tera Raid Turn-by-Turn Counter Strategy | |
---|---|
Turn 1 | Use Taunt to prevent the Raid Boss from using Buffs. Make sure to do this before its shield goes up. |
Turns 2~3 | Use Acid Spray to reduce it's Sp. Def. |
Turns 4~6 | Use Acid Spray until the Raid Boss is at -6 Sp.Def. |
Turns 7~9 | Make sure you're at full health before Terastallizing and using Nasty Plot to boost to +6 Sp. Atk. |
Turn 10+ | Use Sludge Bomb until the Raid Boss is defeated. |
Low HP Turns | Use a Heal Cheer to restore HP. Optionally you could faint so that Gengar revives at full HP. |
Start the battle by using Taunt, so that the Raid Boss can't use buffs the following turn. After that, use Acid Spray to reduce the Raid Boss's Sp. Def, making you deal more damage and heal more health from Shell Bell. Once its shield is up, use Acid Spray again until the Raid Boss is at -6 Sp. Def.
Before you Terastallize, make sure Gengar is at full HP. You can either use a Heal Cheer or allow it to faint to accomplish this. Once Gengar is at full health, Terastallize and use Nasty Plot until it has +6 Sp. Atk.
Once Gengar has fully setup, use Sludge Bomb until the Raid Boss has been defeated.
Remember to heal Gengar with Heal Cheers or by letting it faint so that it can revive at full health.

This Gengar Tera Raid Build is an effective counter to Grass and Fairy-type Tera Raid Bosses. If the Tera Raid Boss has another type outside of Terastallization, consider using a different build.

Leftovers |
The best ability for Gengar is Cursed Body, which has the chance to disable any move when it hits Gengar. This can potentially hinder the raid boss from using any of its physical attacks for a few turns.
Your main goal during the raid is to eliminate any stat boosts the raid boss may get with Clear Smog. This is to prevent it from wiping out your group. You can also further debilitate it by using Will-O-Wisp to halve its Attack.
We recommend getting a Gengar with a Poison Tera Type as it helps it deal huge damage when using Sludge Bomb while it is Terastallized. As a physically defensive utility Pokemon, a Bold nature would be best.
Tera Raid EV spreads should lean towards a bulky special attacker. Max out your HP and Defense EVs, while adding the remaining EVs into Special Attack. Letting Gengar hold Leftovers will allow it to heal some HP per turn, even in turns where you won't launch an attack, like when using Will-O-Wisp or a cheer.
Turn-by-Turn Strategy | |
---|---|
Turn 1 | Use Clear Smog to eliminate any potential initial stat boosts. |
Turns 2~4 | Use Will-O-Wisp to weaken physical attacks and use Sludge Bomb to deal damage. Use Clear Smog whenever needed. |
Turns 5+ | Terastallize and use Sludge Bomb. Use Heal Up! cheers if needed. |
At the start of the Tera Raid, some raid bosses will use stat boosting moves. Immediately use Clear Smog to remove the stat boost, or else your group will suffer and take massive damage or be unable to deal meaningful damage. Make it a priority to remove these stats boosts immediately on later turns.
On the next set of turns, you can weaken the raid boss' physical moves by using WIll-O-Wisp to halve its Attack stat. If you have the chance to deal damage, use Sludge Bomb.
Instances of Clear Smog will charge your Tera Orb, so even if you are not doing much damage, you will be able to Terastallize from simply removing the raid boss' stat boosts. Once you can, Terastallize Gengar and use Tera-boosted Sludge Bomb to dish out damage.

Getting a Gengar is Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is very accessible all thanks to an in-game trade that you can find in the circular walkway at the center of Levincia.
All you need is a Pincurchin to trade for the girl's Haunter, which will evolve into Gengar after the trade.
Pincurchin can usually be found in beaches and shores particularly in South Province (Area Five) and North Province (Area Three).
If your Gengar's Tera Type is different, you can change it to be Poison Tera Type at Medali's Treasure Eatery for 50 Poison Tera Shards
