Volcarona's Fire typing allow it to function as an effective physical wall that can threaten physical attackers with a burn from its Flame Body Ability. Unlike other physical walls, Volcarona can still hit hard thanks to its naturally high Special Attack that it can further boost with Quiver Dance.
Flame Body has a chance to inflict a burn. Can still hit hard after getting enough Quiver Dance boosts. Reliable recovery in Morning Sun. |
Ability | Held Item | |
---|---|---|
Flame Body | Heavy-Duty Boots |
Flame Body is the best Ability for this defensive Volcarona and has a 30% cahnce to inflict a burn when the opponent hit by a contact move.
Heavy-Duty boots is ideal for Volcarona to prevent it from getting damaged by Stealth Rock when switching in.
Fiery Dance | Tera Blast |
Quiver Dance | Morning Sun |
Fiery Dance is Volcarona's main STAB move and also has a 50% chance to raise its Special Attack by one stage, which makes it a difficult Pokemon to switch into if it manages to get several boosts. Tera Blast becomes a Fairy-type move once Volcarona terastallizes and boasts near-perfect coverage alongside Fiery Dance thanks to its great offensive coverage.
Quiver Dance is Volcarona's main boosting move, raising its Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed by one stage. Its last move is Morning Sunand restores 1/2 of Volcarona's total HP, and 2/3 of its HP during harsh sunlight.

Terastallizing Volcarona into a Fairy-type gives it key resistances to Dark and Fighting types, as well as an immunity to Dragon-type moves - three of the most common attacking moves in competitive play.
Terastallizing into a Fairy-type also removes Volcarona's 4x weakness to Rock-types, allowing it to stay on the field for a longer time.
Best Fairy Type Pokemon for Ranked Battle
We're using a defensive EV spread with 244 HP and 244 Defense EVs to maximize its physical bulk, while 20 Speed EVs ensure it can still outrun slower walls even before boosting with Quiver Dance.
Giga Drain | A Grass-type move that can replace Morning Sun that deals damage and also heals, and is useful against Water-type Pokemon. |
---|---|
Bug Buzz | A secondary STAB move but has poor coverage, but has a niche in dealing 4x damage against Wo-Chien. |
The following calculations take into account Volcarona's given EV spread with an Bold Nature and +1 Sp.Atk, +1 Sp.Def, and +1 Speed after using one Quiver Dance.

Tera Type |
Gains immunity to Breloom's Spore and a resistance to replace its Water Type weakness. Makes Volcarona a strong Dragon counter. With Tera Blast it can easily handle other Dragon Type in the meta, aside from just Hydreigon. |
Held Item | Focus Sash |
Moveset | ・
Fiery Dance
・ Bug Buzz ・ Giga Drain ・ Quiver Dance |
Volcarona works best with a dual dance combination set which includes both Quiver Dance and Fiery Dance. Volcarona has one of the highest Special Attack and Speed stats in the current meta, and is very strong against S and A-Tier threats such as Gholdengo and Hydreigon. With the correct Tera Type, Volcarona also has the potential to reverse unfavorable matchups, so it is well worth the investment.
Tera Blast | With a Fairy Type Tera Blast, Volcarona can easily handle any Dragon Type Pokemon. |

Fiery Dance
・ Bug Buzz ・ Giga Drain ・ Quiver Dance |
This set is similar to the Quiver Dance Set, but tweaked for extra survivability at the cost of a slight loss of damage output. With this stat spread and a Wiki Berry as its hold item, Volcarona survives Tera Ghost Mimikyu with 142 Atk EVs' one-two combination of Shadow Claw + Shadow Sneak.
Tera Blast | With a Fairy Type Tera Blast, Volcarona can easily handle any Dragon Type Pokemon. |

Moveset | ・
Overheat
・ Bug Buzz ・ Fiery Dance ・ U-turn |
This set takes advantage of Volcarona's naturally high Speed with Choice Scarf, bypassing the need for Quiver Dance. The moves in this set all go very well with Choice Scarf, as U-Turn allows Volcarona to switch out (to come back later and use a different move), Overheat and Bug Buzz are both very powerful Special Attacking moves and Fiery Dance has a 50% chance to increase Volcarona's Special Attack stat with each use.
Tera Blast | With a Fairy Type Tera Blast, Volcarona can easily handle any Dragon Type Pokemon. |

Heat Wave
・ Struggle Bug ・ Rage Powder ・ Protect |
Volcarona with Rocky Helmet is a potent user of Rage Powder, punishing Physical Attackers with damage and burn from its Flame Body Ability. Struggle Bug further improves its defenses by debuffing an opponent's offensive stats. Heat Wave is Volcarona's main STAB move, with Protect to protect it from getting targetted down.
Tera Grass is Volcarona's Tera Type of choice, as it gives it immunity from Spore, as well as resistances to Water and Rock.
Bug Buzz | Bug Buzz is a powerful STAB option for Volcarona, which has a small chance of lowering a target's Special Defense. |

After setting up one Quiver Dance, Volcarona's Sp. Atk, Sp. Def and Speed will all be raised by one stage. With a Focus Sash, Volcarona is guaranteed to survive a hit while setting up, ready to then sweep thanks to its Quiver Dance + Swarm boost.

By Terastallizing into a Fairy Type and utilizing a Fairy Type Tera Blast, Volcarona gains a large advantage over Dragon Type Pokemon.
Its important to have a pivot in the team that can handle Volcarona's biggest weaknesses such as Dragon Types, Azumarill and Gyarados. In order to counter these Pokemon, bringing along Pokemon like Corviknight, Sylveon or Wash Rotom is crucial.
Special Sweeper | Dragon Counter | Water Counter |
---|---|---|
Volcarona | Sylveon | Wash Rotom |
Having a good support Pokemon to set up residual damage and disruption through Stealth Rocks, Yawn etc, allows Volcarona to setup and sweep easier.
Stealth Rock Setter | Dragon Counter | Special Sweeper |
---|---|---|
Hippowdon | Mimikyu | Volcarona |
Support / Special Attacker | Supprort / Physical Attacker |
---|---|
Volcarona | Grimmsnarl |
Physical Attacker | Support / Special Attacker |
Dondozo | Tatsugiri |
Volcarona and Grimmsnarl offer a heavily defensive front end to your team, which can help position for a successful Dondozo + Tatsugiri endgame. Volcarona can redirect with Rage Powder and burn on contact with Flame Body, while Grimmsnarl sets up Screens, making for very defensive leads.
If the move you are using is a Priority move, you can completely disregard Volcarona's high speed stat. Utilizing a Normal Tera Type Dragonite with Choice Band, it is possible to OHKO Volcarona with Extreme Speed before it can even get started.
