Ability and Held Item

Ability Held Item
Disguise Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Life Orb ImageLife Orb

Mimikyu's only ability is Disguise. This causes the first attack it takes to only do 12.5% of its max HP, guaranteeing it to get a single move off.

The item chosen for this build is a Life Orb. This boosts the damage of Mimikyu's attacks without it locking into using the same move.

Moves Breakdown

Shadow Sneak Play Rough
Wood Hammer Swords Dance

Shadow Sneak is Mimikyu's best Ghost-type STAB move that has +1 priority, allowing it to move before the opponent can act.

Play Rough is its best Fairy-type STAB move, but it has the potential to miss since it only has 90% accuracy.

Wood Hammer is its main coverage move because it has a high base power and it threatens some of the prevalent Water-types, like Suicine, Urshifu Rapid Strike, and Primarina, for super-effective damage.

Swords Dance is nearly guaranteed to go off thanks to Disguise. This allows Mimikyu to heavily boost its Attack and get quick KOs with priority Shadow Sneaks or Stellar Tera-boosted Attacks.

Stellar is the best Tera Type for this build because it buffs whatever move Mimikyu uses after Terastallization, helping it get a quick KO.

Note that even if it's a Stellar-type, it will keep the defensive properties of its Ghost/Fairy typing.

Alternatively, it could use a Ghost Tera to get consistent boosts for Shadow Sneak.

Stellar Tera Type Explained

EV Spread and Nature

A full 252 EVs are placed in Mimikyu's Attack and Speed to make it hit as hard and fast as possible. The extra 4 EVs are put into its HP to help round out its bulk.

A Jolly nature is preferred to help Mimikyu outspeed as many Pokemon as possible.

Other Viable Moves

Drain Punch Hits a wide range of Pokemon for super-effective damage, while also .
Tera Blast Lets Mimikyu hit Terastallized Pokemon for super-effective damage once it Terastallizes itself.

Trick Room

Mimikyu is a reliable Trick Room setter thanks to Disguise Ability giving it added protection. Slower teammates will appreciate Trick Room going up, while Mimikyu itself doesn't always need it.

Other Viable Moves

Will-O-Wisp WIll-O-Wisp is great for neutralizing Physical Attackers from your opponent's side, allowing Mimikyu to set up comfortably.

Ability and Held Item

Disguise is Mimikyu's signature Ability, which gives it protection from one damaging move. Its Held Item of choice is Life Orb, which improves its damage output.

Moves Breakdown

Play Rough is Mimikyu's best STAB Move. Although it is not 100% accurate, it can deal massive chunks of damage to Fairy-weak Pokemon. Shadow Sneak is great for picking off low HP Pokemon.

Will-O-Wisp is useful for crippling Physical Attackers.

Lastly, Curse is great for matchups against Garganacl and Dondozo, because they'll be taking repeated incremental damage.

Best Tera Type

Tera Steel is Mimikyu's best Tera Type because it gives it plenty of resistances.

EV Spread and Nature

An Adamant Nature is chosen for this build, maximizing Mimikyu's damage output to the fullest. A full 252 EVs are put into its Attack and Speed so that it can use Play Rough and Will-O-Wisp as quickly as possible. 4 EVs are put into Special Defense to give it a little bit of Special bulk.

Other Viable Moves

Shadow Claw Great for attacking opposing Ghosts such as Flutter Mane and Gholdengo.

How to Use Mimikyu Effectively

Have Teammates That Can Damage Foes That Mimikyu Cannot

Mimikyu lacks coverage against Fire, Poison, and Dark-types that nullify their Fairy Weakness such as Bisharp, so it's important to choose your teammates wisely.

Set Up Trick Room

Mimikyu can fill the role of either a lead or backup Trick Room setter. Mimikyu being able to do this consistently can help a Trick Room team a great deal, by allowing a Trick Room sweeper to come in and clean up.

How to Build a Team with Mimikyu

While Mimikyu is a strong Pokemon by itself, it is not always the best at 1-on-1 situations where it has to trade damage. Teammates who can dish out damage like Quaquaval and Dragonite can come in and do damage where Mimikyu can't.

Sample Singles Team

Swords Dance Lead Bulky Offense Fast Offense
Mimikyu ImageMimikyu Dragonite ImageDragonite Quaquaval ImageQuaquaval

Mimikyu can be a very potent lead option especially if it gets a Swords Dance off. This lets it trade damage favourably. Dragonite and Quaquaval are great teammates to have because they can switch in and deal damage or set up in situations that are disadvantageous to Mimikyu.

Sample Doubles Team

Physical Attacker Physical Attacker
Iron Hands ImageIron Hands Mimikyu ImageMimikyu
Win Con Special Attacker
Gastrodon (West Sea) ImageGastrodon (West Sea) Iron Bundle ImageIron Bundle

Mimikyu can set Trick Room with support from Iron Hands' Fake Out. Iron Hands can also deal with Steel-types that Mimikyu can't damage meaningfully.

Mimikyu can then neutralize Physical Attackers with Will-O-Wisp to better position for a Garganacl endgame.

Iron Bundle is in the back to take out low HP threats that Mimikyu and Iron Hands have dealt damage to throughout the game.

Counters for Mimikyu

Wall Mimikyu with Steel Types

Mimikyu struggles to break through Steel-types, having no ways to deal with them on the field even with a +2 from Swords Dance. A Steel-type can easily switch in, tank a hit, and dispose of Mimikyu.
