Draco Meteor
・ Air Slash ・ Flamethrower ・ Tera Blast |
Salamence's high Special Attack and Speed stat makes it an amazing Special Attack Sweeper, even without setups. Since this Salamence build uses the ability Intimidate, pairing it with Special Tanks like Gholdengo or Umbreon allows your team to withstand hits from any type of offense.
While Salamence has high firepower and speed, plus the fact that you will be locked into using a single move from Choice Specs, it can be easily countered when your opponent Terastallizes into a type that resists your attack. Avoid this by switching to your tanks to force your opponent to Terastallize.
The Fairy Tera Typing allows Salamence to catch its usual counters off guard, since Pokemon like Garchomp and Dragapult will outspeed you, and try to OHKO you with their STAB Dragon type moves.
Hurricane | A good alternative move with higher damage, but has a lower accuracy. |
---|---|
Sleep Talk | Coverage move against Sleep stallers, since you can output high amounts of damage regardless of which move gets used. |

Ability | Moxie |
Tera Type | |
Held Item | Heavy-Duty Boots |
Moveset | ・
Dragon Dance
・ Dual Wingbeat ・ Outrage ・ Tera Blast |
A combination of Moxie and Dragon Dance makes Salamence a threatening physical attacker as its accumulated boosts can easily snowball and sweep unprepared teams. This build has Fire Tera type to protect it from Will-O-Wisp while also giving it a stronger physical Fire-type move with Tera Blast.
Dual Wingbeat is a strong Flying-type STAB that hits twice, allowing Salamence to take on Sturdy and Focus Sash users, while Outrage is its strongest STAB move that has great neutral coverage.
Heavy Duty Boots is the preferred held item for this build, which allows it to switch in and out safely without fear of getting damaged by Stealth Rock.
Earthquake | A good alternative to Tera Blast that gives roughly the same coverage. If using Earthquake on this set, it's best to set Salamence's Tera type to Flying. |
---|---|
Dragon Claw | A weaker alternative to Outrage but doesn't lock Salamence to a move and inflict confusion after 2 to 3 turns. |
Build Name | Recommendation |

Tailwind Support | ★★★★★ |
Nature | Bold (+Def, -Atk) |
---|---|
EV Spread | HP 252 / Def 160 / Spe 96 |
Final Stat Values | HP 202 / Def 132 / Sp.Atk 130 / Sp.Def 80 / Spe 132 |
Ability | Intimidate |
Tera Type | |
Held Item | Sitrus Berry |
Moveset | ・
Tailwind
・ Roost ・ Heat Wave ・ Helping Hand |
Salamence's Intimidate Ability gives it a surprising bulk, allowing it to function as a bulkier Tailwind setter in Doubles. This is a special-oriented support Salamence so that it doesn't negatively get affected by opposing Intimidate users.
Steel Tera type is the preferred choice here and is used defensively so that it can stay on the field with Fairy-types such as Tinkaton and Flutter Mane, and heal off damage with Roost.
Heat Wave is its main attacking move and is mostly used to deal chip damage against both Pokemon on the field, and also allows it to threaten Amoonguss. Helping Hand is its last move and allows Salamence to boost the power of its ally's move by 50%.
Fire Blast | A stronger alternative to Heat Wave but doesn't hit both Pokemon on the field. |
---|---|
Air Slash | Another alternative to Heat Wave that gets STAB, but is generally a weaker choice as it makes Salamence vulnerable to getting checked by Steel-types. |
Salamence separates itself from the likes of Dragonite and Garchomp by filling the role of a Moxie sweeper. It's capable of sweeping unprepared teams if it manages to get a Dragon Dance and Moxie boost, and it's very difficult to revenge kill once it starts sweeping more Pokemon.
This makes Salamence a high-risk, high-reward Pokemon as it requires some team support to get it safely into the field so that it can setup and sweep.
Salamence is one of the few Tailwind users that have access to Intimdate, alongside the frailer Squawkabilly and Staraptor who opts to go offensive instead.
This gives Salamence a niche in the current Doubles metagame as a bulkier Tailwind support that can also hit back with its respectable offenses.
Salamence competes with other setup sweepers in Singles for position as main sweeper, so it's best to take advantage of its unique strengths and build a team around it.
In Doubles, Salamence is easy to fit into almost any team that requires both Helping Hand and Tailwind support. Offensive teams, in particular, are a great choice as Salamence can feign an offensive set and give it a free turn to setup if the opposing Pokemon decides to switch.
Lead Support | Offensive Pivot | Physical Attacker |
---|---|---|
Iron Treads | Wash Rotom | Salamence |
Iron Treads serves as this team's lead support, setting up Stealth Rock to help net KOs while also providing Knock Off support. Wash Rotom serves as an offensive pivot, spreading paralysis with Discharge and burns with Will-O-Wisp.
Once entry hazards are set and checks crippled with status, Salamence can safely come in and setup with Dragon Dance and net attack boosts with Moxie when it knocks out an opposing Pokemon.
Lead Support | Physical Attacker |
---|---|
Salamence | Ceruledge |
Special Attacker | Redirection Support |
Gholdengo | Toedscruel |
Salamence fills the role of both Tailwind and Helping Hand support for this team, with the boost from both moves appreciated by the strong but relatively slow Ceruledge. Salamence's Intimidate also ensures that Ceruledge can stay on the field against physical attackers better.
Gholdengo is this team's special attacker and, lilke Ceruledge, appreciates the speed boost from Tailwind and power boost from Helping Hand.
Toedscruel is this team's redirection support, with its Mycelium Might bypassing the Garganacl and opposing Gholdengo's Abilities.
Although Salamence is difficult to switch into safely, it's also relatively easy to revenge kill with a faster attacker as several Pokemon can still outspeed it even after a Dragon Dance boost with Choice Scarf.
