One of the ways you can get a Pokemon with a Tera Type you want in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV) is to have the chef of the Treasure Eatery change it for you with 50 Tera Shards! Read on to learn what determines your Pokemon's Tera Type, the exact process of changing your Pokemon's Tera Type, and any possible alternatives to this method.

| 1 | Defeat Larry. He's the Gym Leader of the Medali Gym, and uses Normal-type Pokemon. Read our guide here to find out how to beat him. |
|---|---|
| 2 | Talk with the Chef of the Treasure Eatery at Medali Town. For the first time you talk to him after beating Larry, the chef will give you 50 Normal-type Tera Shards, so you can immediately change the Tera Type of one of your Pokemon to Normal. If you want other Tera Types, however, you'll have to farm 50 pieces of the corresponding Tera Shards and have the chef change your Pokemon's Tera Type with them. |

Tera Shards are obtained by fighting in 3 to 7-Star Tera Raid Battles. The higher the Star rank of the Raid, the better rewards you get, including more Tera Raid Crystals. They are also sometimes rewarded to you after catching or defeating the Terastallized wild Pokemon.
But remember that you will only get Tera Shards that correspond to the Tera Type of the Terastallized Pokemon you defeated. For example, if you defeated a wild Pokemon with a Fire Tera Type, you will only get Fire Tera Shards.
So make sure you're attacking Terastallized wild Pokemon with the right Tera Type to accumulate the shards you need.

Tera Shards are rewards that are sometimes dropped after multi-star Tera Raids. They are the materials you need to change your Pokemon's Tera Type. But not only do you need 50 pieces of them to change a single Pokemon's Tera Type, they also have to match the Tera Type you want as well.
Tera Shards are not sold in any store in Paldea, so you will have to grind for Tera Shards that correspond to the Tera Types you want by fighting in the right Tera Raid Battles.

Dual Type Pokemon can have either one of its regular Types as a Tera Type if they are hatched from an egg or caught in the wild. For example, Magnemite is a Steel and Electric Type, therefore a Magnemite bred or caught in the wild has a 50% chance of having either a Steel or Electric Tera Type.
Meanwhile, Mono Type Pokemon like Rockruff can only have its only Type be its Tera Type, in this case, since Rockruff is a Rock Type, it can only have Rock as its Tera Type if it's caught in the wild or bred.

A Pokemon's Tera type is not necessarily inherited via breeding. For example, if you catch a Grimmsnarl with a Ghost Type Tera Type, breeding it won't give you an Impidimp with a Ghost type Tera Type. If you have a Dark Tera Type Grimmsnarl however, it will have a 50% chance of its offspring having the same Tera Type. If you would like to pass on the Ghost Tera Type, you will either need to use the Pokemon you got in the raid, or change its type with Tera Shards.

The Tera type obtained when you hatch hatch an egg or catch a wild Pokemon is determined by the Species you caught it as. For example, Eevee is a Normal Type, but Sylveon is a Fairy Type, catching a wild Eevee and then evolving it will then give you a Normal Tera Type Sylveon. Inversely, breeding a Fairy Tera Type Sylveon will give you a Normal Tera Type Eevee.

While grinding for the right Tera Shards, you can also look for wild Pokemon you want that have your preferred Tera Type.
In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, many locations have certain Pokemon with different Tera Types. One of them may already suit your needs, so you can just head over to their location and catch them. Read our guide below for more details on how to find the Terastallized wild Pokemon you want.
