STAB or Same Type Attack Bonus boosts the power of a Pokemon's move if used by a Pokemon of the same type. Read on for a guide on how to utilize STAB in Gen 9 and how to get more damage with STAB in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV) for the Nintendo Switch.

What is STAB?

Same-Type Attack Bonus

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - Lurantis Petal Blizzard

STAB is an abbreviation that stands for Same-Type Attack Bonus. When a Pokemon uses a move with a type that matches its own, it will deal 1.5x the normal amount of damage with that move.

How to Use STAB Effectively

Attack with Same-Type Move

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - Lucario Aura Sphere

It's recommended that all Pokemon should have at least 1 STAB move in their learnset, in order for you to utilize their typing.

Dual-types Get Both STAB

Dual-type Pokemon get STAB on moves that match either of their types. For example, a dual Fighting/Steel-type like Lucario will get STAB from the Fighting-type move Aura Sphere and the Steel-type move Flash Cannon.

Avoid Fixed Damage Moves

Moves that deal fixed damage (regardless of Attack stat) don't get any STAB Boost. Below are the attack moves that deal fixed damage:

Fixed Damage Move Type Description
Counter Pokemon Fighting Type Icon A retaliation move that counters any physical attack, inflicting double the damage taken.
Endeavor Pokemon Normal Type Icon An attack move that cuts down the foe’s HP to equal the user’s HP.
Metal Burst Pokemon Steel Type Icon The user retaliates against the foe that last inflicted damage on it with much greater power.
Mirror Coat Pokemon Psychic Type Icon A retaliation move that counters any special attack, inflicting double the damage taken.
Night Shade Pokemon Ghost Type Icon The user makes the foe see a mirage. It inflicts damage matching the user’s level.
Super Fang Pokemon Normal Type Icon The user chomps hard on the foe with its sharp front fangs. It cuts the target's HP to half.
Nature's Madness Pokemon Fairy Type Icon Damages the opponent for 50% of its current HP.

Adaptability Adds to STAB

Pokemon with the Ability Adaptability will receive 2x STAB Boost instead of 1.5x. Adaptability is a possible Ability for Eevee, who is a Normal-type Pokemon.
