Toedscool

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - Toedscool Pokedex Image
Toedscool is the Paldean Convergent species equivalent to the Jellyfish Pokemon Tentacool. Toedscool, despite looking like Tentacool, is actually a terrestrial animal walking on its two legs as compared to how Tentacool swims underwater.

Where Toedscool and Tentacool differ greatly is their physical appearance. Tentacool has a blue body which allows it to blend into its ocean surroundings and makes it a perfect fit for a Water Type while Toedscool has a pink body allowing it to blend into earthy surroundings much like a Ground Type would.

Toedscruel

Toadscruel is the Paldean Convergent species equivalent to the Jellyfish Pokemon Tentacruel. Toedscruel, just like its pre-evolution Toedscool, is a terrestrial animal compared to their Convergent species counterparts, Tentacruel and Tentacool.

Tentacruel has a blue body which allows it to blend into its ocean surroundings and makes it a perfect fit for a Water Type while Toedscruel has a black body allowing it to blend into earthy surroundings much like a Ground Type would.

Wiglett

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - Wiglett Pokedex Image
Wiglett was the first Convergent species to be revealed in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Wiglett is remarkably similar to Diglett in appearance although has a much longer, white body, as opposed to Diglett's shorter, brown body.

Wiglett also has a unique cry, that differs from Diglett's and sounds more like a Seagull, fitting for its ocean habitat. Where Wiglett and Diglett vary the most however, are their typings. Wiglett is a pure Water Type, while Diglett is a Ground Type.

Wugtrio

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - Wugtrio Pokedex Image
Introduced in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Wugtrio is the evolution of Wiglett just like its Convergent Species counterpart, Dugtrio is to Diglett.

Unlike their pre-evolutions, Wugtrio has a much more striking difference to Dugtrio as its entire body is a coral red color, befitting of its Water typing unlike Dugtrio with its brown color which suits its Ground typing.

Poltchageist

The Haunting Tale of Poltchageist 3-5 screenshot.png

Poltchageist is set to debut in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's DLC, The Teal Mask. Poltchageist is remarkably similar to Sinistea in appearance although it seems to be inhabiting a ceramic tea jar, as opposed to Sinistea's tea cup. Unlike other convergent species introduced, Poltchageist shares a the Ghost typing with Sinistea.

The difference is that Poltchageist seems to be inhabiting the tea container along with the tea inside giving it a distinct green color, compared to the Sinistea line which just inhabits an empty tea set with their bodies acting as the tea itself.

What are Convergent Species?

Based on Real Life Convergent Evolution

Klawf Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
Convergent species are based on the real life phenomenon of convergent evolution. Merriam-Webster defines convergent evolution as:

The independent development of similar traits or features (as of body structure or behavior) in unrelated or distantly related species or lineages that typically occupy similar environments or ecological niches
Source: Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary

Crabs are often pointed out as a real life example of this, as several unrelated species of animals have evolved to have crab-like features over the past 2-300 million years. In the Pokemon world, convergent species work much the same, with completely unrelated species (such as Diglett and Wiglett) evolving to have very similar body structures, due to the advantages gained for their environment.

Different to Regional Forms

Paldean Wooper Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
Regional forms and Convergent species differ in one key way. Regional forms are technically the same species of Pokemon with some variations in appearance and typing. Convergent species are completely unrelated species of Pokemon that coincidentally share a few characteristics.

While Johto's Wooper and Paldean Wooper are both technically the same species of Pokemon- Wooper, Diglett and Wiglett are two completely unrelated species, just as Pikachu is to Lechonk.

Are Convergent Species Stronger Than Their Counterparts?

Appearance Isn't the Only Difference!

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - Convergent Battle
Due to how they have adapted to their environment and how different they are genetically to their counterparts, Convergent Species have different uses in battle as compared to their counterparts. They have similar stats but how each point is distributed varies. They can even have different base stat totals.
