Moveset | ・
Bitter Blade
・ Shadow Sneak ・ Close Combat ・ Swords Dance |
Ceruledge is a great setup sweeper as not only does it have Swords Dance, its signature move Bitter Blade heals half of the damage it deals. This allows it to stay on the field for a long time as it can simply heal off the damage it's received by attacking.
Shadow Sneak is its secondary STAB move and, while weak, allows it to catch faster Pokemon such as Gengar and Flutter Mane.
Close Combat is its last coverage move and gives the Fire Blades Pokemon great neutral coverage.
We're using Fighting Tera Type to give it STAB Close Combat, while its Weak Armor Ability ensures it gets a two-stage Speed boost when hit by a physical attack at the cost of a one stage Defense drop.
Shadow Claw | A stronger alternative to Shadow Sneak but leaves Ceruledge outsped by faster attackers. |
---|---|
Solar Blade | A Grass-type alternative to Close Combat but is best used in a dedicated Sun team to remove the one-turn charge. |

Moveset | ・
Bitter Blade
・ Shadow Claw ・ Shadow Sneak ・ Close Combat |
This build takes advantage of Ceruledge great natural bulk while still dealing as much damage as possible with STAB Bitter Blade and Shadow Claw.
Shadow Sneak is now a required move as with not much Speed EVs, it's easily outsped by even slower attackers. Finally, Close Combat rounds off its coverage by providing great neutral coverage.
We're using Fighting Tera type to remove Ceruledge's common Ground and Rock weakness, while also powering up its Close Combat. Flash Fire is the preferred Ability for this build to protect it from Will-O-Wisp after terastallizing into a Fighting-type.
Tera Blast | Fighting-type Tera Blast is a good alternative to Close Combat. While weaker, it doesn't reduce Ceruledge's Defense and Sp. Defense by one stage. |
---|---|
Brick Break | A weaker alternative to Close Combat but can remove Reflect and Aurora Veil from the field. |

Moveset | ・
Bitter Blade
・ Shadow Sneak ・ Tera Blast ・ Bulk Up |
Ceruledge is usually in a good position to sweep after a single Bulk Up with Bitter Blade as its main STAB move and Shadow Sneak as an option for Priority.
Ceruledge can then Terastallize to Grass to avoid getting KOd by a Ground-type Attack, and hit bulky Water-types with Grass Tera Blast.
Brick Break | Good for removing Screens like Reflect and Aurora Veil from the field. |
---|
Ceruledge's great natural bulk, particularly its high Sp. Defense allow it to comfortably boost with Swords Dance against Grass and opposing Fire-types.
Its ability to heal off damage with its signature move Bitter Blade also allows it to stay in matches without switching unlike other setup sweepers.
Ceruledge's great dual STAB and natural coverage make it a welcome addition to any team, and is a particularly great addition to Fire-Water-Grass cores.
Lead Attacker | Offensive Pivot | Special Sweeper |
---|---|---|
Ceruledge | Gyarados | Mow Rotom |
Ceruledge makes a great lead attacker, setting up with Swords Dance and using its powerful dual STAB to deal as much damage as possible. It synergizes well with Gyarados who struggles against bulky Grass-types, while also covering the Fire Blades Pokemon's weakness to Ground and Water-types.
Mow Rotom rounds off this team's coverage by providing powerful Grass and Electric-type coverage, and easily pivoting to its teammates using Volt Switch.
Support | Special Attacker |
---|---|
Murkrow | Gholdengo |
Physical Attacker | Special Attacker |
Ceruledge | Hydreigon |
Ceruledge is great to have as a Pokemon in the back, who can take out low HP Pokemon from the opponent's side of the field. While a Pokemon like Hydreigon can be a dedicated late-game Sweeper, Ceruledge can come in earlier than Hydreigon and have Hydreigon fresh for the end game.
Ceruledge struggles against bulky Water-types, especially if it's not carrying Solar Blade. Even with this coverage move, it requires one turn to charge which leaves it vulnerable to bulky Pokemon who can shrug off the move.
Pokemon | Description |
---|---|
Gyarados | Ranking: ★★★★★
・Takes neutral damage to Solar Blade and lowers Ceruledge's Attack with Intimidate. ・Can set up with Swords Dance and retaliate with Earthquake. |
Toxapex | Ranking: ★★★★
・Resists Ceruledge's Fire STAB and can shrug off coverage moves with Recover. ・Can inflict poison with Toxic and lower Ceruledge's Attack with Chilling Water. |
Wash Rotom | Ranking: ★★★★
・Resists Ceruledge's main STAB and can easily pivot using Volt Switch. ・Can inflict paralysis with Thunder Wave. |
Ceruledge also struggles against Fire-types as it lacks and coverage move to threaten them. Pokemon with the Flash Fire Ability, in particular, prevents Ceruledge from using Bitter Blade to heal itself.
Pokemon | Description |
---|---|
Houndoom | Ranking: ★★★★★
・Absorbs Ceruledge's Fire STAB and is resistant to its Ghost-type moves. ・Can wear down Ceruledge with Dark Pulse. |
Arcanine | Ranking: ★★★★
・Absobrs Ceruledge's Fire STAB and can threaten it with Crunch. ・Defensive variants with Intimidate and Body Slam can inflict paralysis. |

Honestly, I don't understand why there isn't a build on here for crits, granted it depends on friendship. Ceruledge gets three high crit moves, one is STAB: Shadow Claw, Night Slash, Psycho Cut. Bitter Blade isn't high crit but gets a 50% chance and heals. Basically a max EV attack build, high friendship, holding Scope Lense. Those three high crit moves will ALWAYS crit and Bitter Blade is a 50% crit. Even without STAB Night Slash and Psycho Cut hit HARD.
