Most Pokemon only need to reach a certain level in order to evolve. This is probably the easiest evolution method since your Pokemon naturally gain experience points and levels when you use them.
Note that some Pokemon may need to level up during a certain time of day. For a few Pokemon species, like Salandit, evolution may also depend on the gender of your Pokemon.

You can evolve these Pokemon by going into your Bag, selecting the evolution item you need, and using (not giving) it on your desired Pokemon.
There are some Pokemon like Gligar that need to hold a certain item instead when leveling up in order to evolve.

Some of the more difficult Pokemon to evolve are those that don't fit the evolution conditions listed above. These Pokemon evolve through unconventional methods that may be hard to discover on your own.
For example, White-Striped Basculin evolves into Basculegion by taking 294 points of recoil damage when using its strong moves that also hurts itself. This is an evolution method unique to Basculegion.
