Ability Held Item
Levitate Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Covert Cloak ImageCovert Cloak

Levitate is Cresselia's only ability. This makes it so that Cresselia is not affected by Ground-type moves unless it becomes grounded by moves like Gravity and Smack Down.

Covert Cloak is the item used on this build to prevent Cresselia from getting affected by secondary effects from moves like the passive damage from Salt Cure or status effects from moves like Dire Claw.

Moves Breakdown

Moonblast Stored Power
Calm Mind Moonlight

Moonblast is Cresselia's main attack due to its strong offensive coverage.

Stored Power is its main Psychic-type STAB move that gets stronger the more Calm Mind boosts it gets.

Calm Mind boosts Cresselia's Sp. Atk and Sp. Def by one stage. Each time it uses Calm Mind, Stored Power gets an extra +40 BP.

Moonlight lets Cresselia recover half of its max HP allowing it to stay in battle longer.

EV Spread Explanation

A full 252 EVs are put into Cresselia's HP and Defense to maximize its bulk against physical attackers. The extra 4 EVs are placed in its Sp. Def to help round out its bulk, especially after getting Sp. Def boosts from Calm Mind.

A Bold nature is preferred to maximize Cresselia's Defense stat.

Other Viable Moves

Lunar Dance Used when Cresselia is about to get knocked out. This move will cause Cresselia to faint, but the next Pokemon that switches in will be cured of any status effects and its HP and PP will be fully restored
Trick Room Causes slower Pokemon to move first in the turn order. Best used when Cresselia has slower teammates.
Psychic Does more damage than Stored Power before two Calm Mind boosts. After two Calm Mind boosts, Stored Power will have a base power of 100 compared to Psychic's 90.

EV Spread Explanation

Cresselia's EV spread for this build leans on making it a bulky Trick Room setter, prioritizing its Defenses. A Calm Nature allows you to put just enough EVs into Special Defense, giving Cresselia some sizeable special bulk.

Other Viable Moves

Ice Beam Useful for hitting opposing Landorus, and other Ice-weak Pokemon.
Ally Switch An incredibly annoying yet useful move which can switch Cresselia's position with its partner.

How to Use Cresselia Effectively

Use Cresselia to Enable Trick Room

Cresselia is one of the bulkiest Pokemon available and is sure to survive most offensive attempts at taking it out. Terastallize if it is in danger of getting KOd to ensure that Trick Room goes up.

Increase Its Bulk With Screens

Cresselia is already naturally bulky, and this can be further increased by using moves like Reflect, Light Screen and Aurora Veil.

How to Build a Team with Cresselia

Cresselia's toolkit and stats make it a suitable Pokemon in Trick Room teams. Teammates who can help enable Trick Room are greatly appreciated, as well as slow teammates who flourish under Trick Room conditions.

Sample Singles Team

Screens Lead Setup Attacker Special Attacker
Alolan Ninetales ImageAlolan Ninetales Cresselia ImageCresselia Bloodmoon Ursaluna ImageBloodmoon Ursaluna

Alolan Ninetales can support its teammates by setting screens with Aurora Veil in order to reduce the damage they take. This allows Cresselia to safely setup without having to take too much damage in return.

Having another bulky attacker in the back like Bloodmoon Ursaluna is ideal because they also appreciate the damage reduction from having screens set up.

Sample Doubles Team

Support Physical Attacker
Cresselia ImageCresselia Iron Hands ImageIron Hands
Special Attacker Physical Attacker
Enamorus (Therian Forme) ImageEnamorus (Therian Forme) Ursaluna ImageUrsaluna

Cresselia can benefit from having a teammate who can help enable Trick Room, such as Iron Hands, who is a Fake Out user.

Both Enamorus-T and Ursaluna are great at abusing Trick Room's conditions thanks to their low speed and strong offense.

Counters for Cresselia

Force Cresselia to Tera or KO It

Cresselia will not be able to survive multiple powerful super-effective hits. While it can Terastallize to shed its weakness, it also forces the player to commit Tera, which is a valuable resource.
