U-turn
・ Shed Tail ・ Rapid Spin ・ Outrage |
Cyclizar is one of just two Pokemon to have access to the brand new Shed Tail move. This is a move that for the cost of losing half of your HP, creates a substitute and switches the user out to pass on the substitute to. Cyclizar also has a great Speed stat, allowing it to outspeed most opposing Pokemon and effectively set up its Shed Tail. Finally, Cyclizar has a range of other useful utility moves including Rapid Spin and Taunt, making it best suited as a Support Pokemon.
Taunt | Good against Hippowdon or other Whirlwind users to prevent Shed Tail Sub being blown away. |
---|---|
Dragon Claw | Less damage output than Outrage but free to use a different move on the following turn. |
Lagging Tail | If Cyclizar is against a Pokemon it can tank a hit from, this will allow its Shed Tail to last during the turn it is used. |

・ Overheat ・ Shed Tail ・ Protect |
Cyclizar is largely underrated as an offensive Pokemon, being able to outspeed and KO top Pokemon like Garchomp, Hydreigon, and Gholdengo.
Its Shed Tail is also great for giving teammates in the back a Substitute to protect them, letting you be more liberal with your offense.
Protect is excellent for turns where Cyclizar is in danger of being double-targetted.
Fire Tera is used to boost Overheat's power and KO Pokemon like Amoonguss.
Taunt | Good against Hippowdon or other Whirlwind users to prevent Shed Tail Sub being blown away. |

Item: Life Orb | Life Orb Draco Meteor 159 ~ 187 (95.2 ~ 111.9%) 62.5% chance to OHKO |
Item: Choice Specs | Life Orb Overheat 317 ~ 374 (194.4 ~ 229.4%) Guaranteed OHKO |
Item: Iapapa Berry | Life Orb Overheat 159 ~ 187 (71.9 ~ 84.6%) Guaranteed 2-Hit HKO |
Item: Iapapa Berry | Fire Tera Life Orb Overheat 260 ~ 308 (142 ~ 168.3%) Guaranteed OHKO |
Item: Occa Berry | Fire Tera Life Orb Overheat 159 ~ 187 (71.9 ~ 84.6%) Guaranteed 2-Hit KO |
Cyclizar's main purpose is to use shed tail to set up substitutes for allies. To make the most of the substitute, switching to a Pokemon that has immunity to the expected incoming move is a good strategy. If you are expecting a Dragon Pulse you could give your Shed Tail Substitute to Mimikyu, if you are expecting a Close Combat you could give your Shed Tail Substitute to Mimikyu, Dragapult or Gholdengo.
In most cases you should save your Tera Orb for another Pokemon in your team and use Cyclizar for support. Cyclizar outspeeds most Pokemon when running the recommended build and generally will be using its Shed Tail, so in those cases defensively and offensively there is no need to Terastallize.
There are certain cases however where Terastallizing Cyclizar to a Steel Type can have some benefits. If you are facing a Dragapult, Cyclizar counters it well as an attacker. Terastallizing it to a Steel Type allows it to tank an incoming Dragon Darts. Cyclizar can then follow up with an Outrage for a guaranteed OHKO.
No matter what Cyclizar switches to, you know it can be safe with its Shed Tail substitute set up. If you play it right, this will make it very difficult to take down the incoming Pokemon.

Cyclizar | Mimikyu | Gholdengo |
Lead Utility | Sweeper | Backup Attacker |

Cyclizar | Palafin | Meowscarada |

Cyclizar | Toxapex | Dragonite |

Pawmot | Cyclizar |
Physical Attacker | Special Attacker |
Garchomp | Gholdengo |
Pawmot can use Fake Out on Pokemon quicker than Cyclizar, or on Pokemon like Murkrow who would want to set up Tailwind. Cyclizar can outspeed unsuspecting Garchomp and Hydreigon and KO with Draco Meteor.
Cyclizar can also use Shed Tail and pass on a substitute to powerful sweepers in the back.
