Heatran's default Ability is Flash Fire, which gives its Fire-type Moves a boost after it is targetted by a Fire-type Move. Life Orb is its Held Item of Choice, as it lets Heatran deal even more damage at the cost of some HP.
| Fire Blast | Flash Cannon |
| Earth Power | Taunt |
Fire Blast is chosen as Heatran's primary Fire-type STAB move, despite its accuracy, because it offers huge burst damage. This choice prioritizes power at the cost of a little consistency.
Flash Cannon is Steel-type STAB move with little drawback.
Earth Power is Heatran's most reliable coverage option, being able to hit a good number of types for super-effective damage.
and lastly Taunt is for shutting down opposing Pokemon who would attempt to set up.

Flying is the best Tera Type for this build as it can remove Heatran's weaknesses to Ground and Fighting, while taking neutral from Water.
Best Flying Type Pokemon for Ranked Battle
This build focuses on fast offense, so a full 252 are put into Special Attack and Speed. The remaining 4 EVs are put into Defense to slightly increase Heatran's bulk on the physical side, making it so it can take Earthquakes and Close Combats a little better.
| Flamethrower | A more accurate, yet less powerful Fire-type STAB move. |

| Item: Choice Specs | Flamethrower 242 ~ 283 (148.4 ~ 173.6%) Guaranteed OHKO |
| Item: Leftovers | Flamethrower [n]143 ~ 172 (74.4 ~ 89.5%) Guaranteed 2-Hit KO After Leftovers Recovery |
| Item: Choice Specs | Shadow Ball 109 ~ 129 (65.6 ~ 77.7%) Guaranteed 2-Hit KO |

Heatran's default Ability is Flash Fire, which gives its Fire-type Moves a boost after it is targetted by a Fire-type Move. Focus Sash is its Held Item of Choice, because it lets Heatran survive more than one hit, giving it even more survivability.
| Heat Wave | Flash Cannon |
| Earth Power | Protect |
Heat Wave is a powerful Fire-type spread attack that Heatran can use to deal damage and fish for burns.
Flash Cannon is Steel-type STAB move with little drawback.
Earth Power is Heatran's most reliable coverage option, being able to hit a good number of types for super-effective damage.
Protect is for protecting Heatran on turns where it is in a disadvantage.

Grass is the best Tera Type for this build as it can remove Heatran's weaknesses to Ground and Water, while taking neutral from Fighting.
Best Grass Type Pokemon for Ranked Battle
This build focuses on fast offense, so a full 252 are put into Special Attack and Speed. The remaining 4 EVs are put into Defense to slightly increase Heatran's bulk on the physical side, making it so it can take Earthquakes and Close Combats a little better.
| Tera Blast | Tera Blast with Grass Tera can be a solid answer to Water Pokemon. |
|---|---|
| Magma Storm | Magma Storm can trap opposing Pokemon for several turns by preventing them from switching. |
| Heavy Slam | A Steel STAB option that can more consistently KO Flutter Mane than Flash Cannon. |
| Item: Choice Specs | Heat Wave 190 ~ 226 (116.5 ~ 138.6%) Guaranteed OHKO |
| Item: Leftovers | Heat Wave [n]109 ~ 133 (56.7 ~ 69.2%) Guaranteed 2-Hit KO After Leftovers Recovery |
| Item: Choice Specs | Shadow Ball 109 ~ 129 (65.6 ~ 77.7%) Guaranteed 2-Hit KO |
Game8's Competitive Damage Calculator
Heatran is an excellent Tera Pokemon, as it can use Tera to remove its many weaknesses. While we recommend a Flying Tera, Water and Grass are also viable Tera options as well.
Heatran works best when it is able to move first, and you can achieve this with Speed Control. This can come in the form of Trick Room, Icy Wind, or Tailwind.
Putting Heatran with teammates that can mitigate its weaknesses is a good idea when team building around Heatran. These weaknesses include its mediocre Speed, and bad defensive typing, which you can remedy with Speed control and good partners or Terastallization respectively.
| Special Attacker | Special Attacker | Physical Attacker |
|---|---|---|
Heatran
|
Flutter Mane
|
Gyarados
|
Heatran can afford to lead off some matches and immediately go on the offensive. Flutter Mane is a solid switch-in to Fighting-type moves because of its immunity, while Gyarados can switch in to Ground and Water-type attacks.
| Support | Physical Attacker |
|---|---|
Cresselia
|
Iron Hands
|
| Physical Attacker | Special Attacker |
Chien-Pao
|
Heatran
|
Cresselia and Iron Hands form a strong front end to this team, giving the team a Trick Room option if the user is against quicker leads.
Chien-Pao can assist Iron Hands, and threaten Ice and Fighting-type Pokemon who may otherwise threaten our Tera Grass Heatran.
Tera Grass Heatran may be very difficult to KO if the opponent has run out of ways to deal super-effective damage to it, so preserving it for the late-game is often a good strategy.
With Terastallization and more useable Pokemon, it is easier to wall Heatran this time around, compared to previous games. Take advantage of its many weaknesses and hit it with a super-effective attack. Heatran is forced to Tera or risk getting outright KOd.
