How to Use Heatran Effectively

Terastallize Heatran to Remove its Weaknesses

Heatran is an excellent Tera Pokemon, as it can use Tera to remove its many weaknesses. While we recommend a Flying Tera, Water and Grass are also viable Tera options as well.

Play Heatran with Speed Control

Heatran works best when it is able to move first, and you can achieve this with Speed Control. This can come in the form of Trick Room, Icy Wind, or Tailwind.

How to Build a Team with Heatran

Putting Heatran with teammates that can mitigate its weaknesses is a good idea when team building around Heatran. These weaknesses include its mediocre Speed, and bad defensive typing, which you can remedy with Speed control and good partners or Terastallization respectively.

Sample Singles Team

Special Attacker Special Attacker Physical Attacker
Heatran ImageHeatran Flutter Mane ImageFlutter Mane Gyarados ImageGyarados

Heatran can afford to lead off some matches and immediately go on the offensive. Flutter Mane is a solid switch-in to Fighting-type moves because of its immunity, while Gyarados can switch in to Ground and Water-type attacks.

Sample Doubles Team

Support Physical Attacker
Cresselia ImageCresselia Iron Hands ImageIron Hands
Physical Attacker Special Attacker
Chien-Pao ImageChien-Pao Heatran ImageHeatran

Cresselia and Iron Hands form a strong front end to this team, giving the team a Trick Room option if the user is against quicker leads.

Chien-Pao can assist Iron Hands, and threaten Ice and Fighting-type Pokemon who may otherwise threaten our Tera Grass Heatran.

Tera Grass Heatran may be very difficult to KO if the opponent has run out of ways to deal super-effective damage to it, so preserving it for the late-game is often a good strategy.

Counters for Heatran

Use Pokemon with a Type Advantage

With Terastallization and more useable Pokemon, it is easier to wall Heatran this time around, compared to previous games. Take advantage of its many weaknesses and hit it with a super-effective attack. Heatran is forced to Tera or risk getting outright KOd.
