Trick Room teams are a team archetype that focuses on Speed Control in Competitive Ranked Battles in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV). Read on to learn what a Trick Room team is, how to make a Trick Room team in Gen 9, what strategies to use with one, and what countermeasures to use against one.
List of Contents
First introduced in Generation IV, Trick Room reverses the move order in the battlefield. Under this effect, slower Pokemon move before normally faster Pokemon.
Although this move is considered a form of speed control, dedicated teams made up of slower Pokemon can take advantage of this unique battle effect to establish an offensive presence while also hindering the opposing team.
Trick Room lasts for 5 turns, but using the move counts as the first turn. In practice, Trick Room only lasts for 4 turns. Once the effect ends, the move order is restored and faster Pokemon will move before slower Pokemon.
Using the move when Trick Room is already set up instantly ends the effect, so it's important to take note how many turns of Trick Room your team has left.
Moves that have increased priority will bypass the reversed move order in Trick Room. This includes increased priority moves such as Quick Attack and Extreme Speed, as well as Prankster-boosted status moves.
List of Priority Moves
Trick Room teams require at least two Pokemon that can set up the effect, with one filling the role of a lead and the other serving as backup.
Pokemon | Description |
---|---|
Cresselia | Ranking: ★★★★★ ・Is incredibly difficult to KO thanks to its typing, Terastallization, and natural bulk. ・Consistent Trick Room setter. |
Indeedee (Female) | Ranking: ★★★★★ ・Has built-in protection in Psychic Surge. ・Has modest bulk. |
Farigiraf | Ranking: ★★★★ ・Armor Tail protects it from being flinched with Fake Out ・Has access to boosting moves like Nasty Plot and Calm Mind, allowing it to be a backup Sweeper. |
Armarouge | Ranking: ★★★ ・Can Terastallize into a defensive Ability (Grass to resist Ground and Water) and tank a hit. ・Can function well in Trick Room because of the prevalence of faster Pokemon in the format. ・Works best with Indeedee (Female) |
Hatterene | Ranking: ★★★ ・Magic Bounce protects Hatterene from the effects of Taunt. ・Can work as a Sweeper with minimal setup. ・Works best with Indeedee (Female) |
Mimikyu | Ranking: ★★ ・Despite being fast, Mimikyu is a reliable Trick Room setter thanks to Disguise, which protects Mimikyu from getting OHKOd. ・Can work as a Sweeper after a Swords Dance. ・Can be disruptive against Physical Sweepers with Will-O-Wisp. |
Bronzong | Ranking: ★★★★☆ ・Boasts excellent mixed defenses and a great dual typing ・Lack of reliable recovery means it can be taken down with repeated hits |
Fill your team with slower, powerful Pokemon that can take advantage of Trick Room's effects.
Pokemon | Description |
---|---|
Ursaluna | Ranking: ★★★★★ ・A massive attack stat and decent mixed defenses make it a great bulky sweeper under Trick Room ・Guts rewards Ursaluna with an Attack boost, while negating the Attack drop that usually results from this status condition. Ursaluna can take advantage of this by holding a Flame Orb to boost its Attack stat while preventing other disruptive status conditions. |
Iron Hands | Ranking: ★★★★★ ・Powerful Physical Attacker even outside Trick Room.・Can provide Fake Out support to ensure that its partner can set up Trick Room. |
Hariyama | Ranking: ★★★★☆ ・Great Attack stat and solid offensive options. ・Can provide Fake Out support to ensure that its partner can set up Trick Room. |
Copperajah | Ranking: ★★★☆☆ ・Boasts a massive attack stat and excellent physical coverage moves, such as Heavy Slam, Heat Crash, and Earthquake |
Hippowdon | Ranking: ★★★☆☆ ・Naturally synergizes with Bronzong, by being able to use Earthquake while Bronzong avoids it with Levitate. ・Has access to Elemental Fang attacks, such as Thunder Fang to take care of Water-types |
Pokemon | Description |
---|---|
Torkoal | Ranking: ★★★★★ ・Torkoal is an amazing Special Trick Room Sweeper, able to burn through entire teams with Sun-boosted Eruption. ・Drought reduces the damage from Water-type moves and gives Torkoal access to Solar Beam without having to take a turn to charge. |
Hatterene | Ranking: ★★★★★ ・High special attack and excellent mixed defenses make it a great bulky sweeper under Trick Room ・Magic Bounce Ability gives it immunity to many status moves and instead reflects it back. |
Magnezone | Ranking: ★★★★★ ・Can threaten Fairy-types with its powerful Flash Cannon ・Can threaten Electric-weak Pokemon with STAB Electric-type moves like Thunderbolt |
Like other forms of speed control, Trick Room is most effective when it's set up at the very start of the battle so that you establish immediate offensive momentum for your team.
Using Trick Room early also hampers opposing teams, especially Hyper Offense teams that rely on fast sweepers.
Since Trick Room only lasts for an effective 4 turns, it's important to take note of each turn so that you know when to use the move again.
Cresselia |
Cresselia is the most consistent Trick Room setter in Regulation D. Its natural bulk makes it an ideal Trick Room setter, with Terastallization protecting it from super-effective hits. Trick Room players can usually win games when Trick Room goes up, and Cresselia is the best choice for setting it up.
Ursaluna |
Ursaluna, with its monstrous Attack stat, is the best new Physical Attacker for Trick Room. Opponents will be hard pressed to survive five turns against this behemoth.
The most effective way to counter Trick Room teams is to take out the lead setter as soon as possible. Focus your attacks on the opposing team's leads and setters once you identify them.
You can also occasionally Taunt the Trick Room setter, preventing them from using the move.
Since Trick Room's duration is relatively short, you can also stall the effects with Protect and defensive switches.
