As a dual Fire-Flying-type Pokemon, Charizard is weak to the comparatively common attacking types Rock and Electric. Its 4x weakness to Rock-type moves in particular makes Charizard susceptible to OHKOs. Thanks to its Dragon Tera Typing however, Charizard can turn many of its weaknesses into resistances, as well as reducing the amount of damage it takes from Rock Type moves by 75%.
Charizard's Dragon Tera Type is not only great defensively, but it also boosts Charizard offensively. Dragon deals neutral damage to all Types except for Steel (resisted), Fairy (immune) and Dragon (super-effective). Charizard already hits Steel for super-effective damage and Fairy for neutral damage with its STAB Fire Type moves.
Dragon Pulse is a base 85 power Dragon Type move, and thanks to Tera Stab, this is boosted to over 125 power. Combined with Charizard's high Special Attack stat in sun, no pokemon is safe against Charizard.
Fire Blast | Does more damage than Flamethrower at the cost of lower accuracy. |
---|---|
Hurricane | Does more damage than Air Slash at the cost of lower accuracy |
Will-O-Wisp | Burning the opponent allows Charizard to make up for its lower Defense by halving the opponent's Attack stat. |

With a Fire Tera Type, Charizard can take full advantage of sun. Sun increases the power of Fire Type moves by 50%, which are already increased 50% by Charizards regular Fire STAB. This is then increased a further 50% thanks to Charizard's Special Attack boost from its Solar Power Ability. The Life Orb held item increases this an additional 30%.
Finally the Fire Tera Typing adds one last 50% Tera STAB bonus on top of this, bringing the total Power increase to 230%, or 3.3 times its initial power. This means Charizard will still be doing large damage even to types that resist its Fire Type moves.
Charizard's Total Damage Output | |
---|---|
Boost | Percentage |
Base Neutral Damage | 100% |
STAB | +50% |
Tera STAB | +50% |
Sun | +50% |
Solar Power Ability | +50% |
Life Orb | +30% |
Total | 330% |
As a pure Fire Type, Charizard becomes just 2x weak to Rock Type moves. As Charizard does not have much bulk, even a 2x weakness still has potential to OHKO it, but thanks to Charizard's high Speed and one-turn Solarbeam in sun, it may be possible to neutralize rock type threats pre-emptively.
Blast Burn | Deals massive Fire Type damage at the cost of being unable to move the following turn and slightly lower accuracy. Could be useful when Charizard is low on HP, against the final Pokemon, or a desperate situation. |
---|---|
Fire Blast | Does more damage than Flamethrower at the cost of lower accuracy. |
Hurricane | Does more damage than Air Slash at the cost of lower accuracy |
Will-O-Wisp | Burning the opponent allows Charizard to make up for its lower Defense by halving the opponent's Attack stat. |
No matter which of the 2 builds you go with, Charizard can deal huge damage with either its Fire or Dragon type moves in the sun. With the Dragon Tera Build, Dragon Pulse, a largely unresisted Dragon Type move, has its power boosted 2.3x in sun thanks to Solar Power, Life Orb and Tera STAB.
Meanwhile the Fire Tera Build, allows for 3.3x boosted damage thanks to the additional sun boost and original STAB boost. This is enough damage to OHKO many S and A-Tier threats with its Fire or Dragon Type moves including Gholdengo, Dragapult, Meowscarada, Breloom, Amoonguss, Hydreigon, Grimmsnarl, Sylveon and Umbreon.
Charizard gains access to an excellent coverage move with Solar Beam. Using this move it can cover its Water and Rock Type weaknesses effectively and hit them for a powerful 120 Base Power, without the draw back of needing a turn to recharge thanks to the sun. With Solar Beam it can handle many A-Tier Water, Ground and Rock Type threats including Wash Rotom, Palafin, Dondozo, Hippowdon, Garganacl and Azumarill.
Charizard fits in well with a variety of teams. Teams that set the sun such as Paradox Sun Teams are the obvious choice, as they will activate Charizard's Solar Power Ability. However Pokemon with the Chlorophyll ability such as Scovillain, Leafeon and Lilligant also make good partners.
Charizard fits best in a team that has a Pokemon with an Ability to set the sun, as well as other Pokemon to take advantage of the weather boost. Also as Charizard is a glass cannon, it is important for a Pokemon with sufficient bulk present on the team also.
Lead Attacker and Sun Setter | Hyper Offense | Physical Wall |
---|---|---|
Koraidon | Charizard | Brute Bonnet |
This Team relies on Koraidon to set the sun with its Orichalcum Pulse Ability. From there all 3 Pokemon get boosts from the sun and can function well independently as attackers. Brute Bonnet also provides good bulk and utility, as well as Dark Type coverage.
Sun Setter | Hyper Offense | Bulky Attacker |
---|---|---|
Torkoal | Charizard | Leafeon |
This team relies on Torkoal to set the sun with its Drought Ability. Torkoal is also a bulky utility option, with access to Yawn, Will-O-Wisp and Rapid Spin, the last of which is an important counter to Stealth Rock, which does 50% damage to Charizard due to its dual Fire-Flying Type. Leafeon also provides physical bulk which Charizard is lacking and can take advantage of the sun for a Chlorophyll speed boost.
Charizard has plenty of weaknesses to be exploited. A Physical Attacker that can outspeed Charizard or take a hit before dealing Rock Type damage is a sure-fire strategy. Setting Stealth Rocks and using Whirlwind also works to force 50% damage upon switch in. Finally, having a Pokemon that can over-ride the weather will shut Charizard down quickly.
Pokemon | Description |
---|---|
Hippowdon | Ranking: ★★★★★
・Stealth Rock + Whirlwind may be too much for a Charizard team to handle. ・Can over-ride the weather with its Sand Stream ・Can easily tank Solar Beams in sandstorm ▶️Hippowdon Best Movesets |
Garganacl | Ranking: ★★★★★
・Can withstand a Solar Beam in sun ・Can hit back with Salt Cure to OHKO ▶️Garganacl Best Movesets |
Glimmora | Ranking: ★★★★★
・Can tank all of Charizard's moves ・OHKOs with Power Gem ・Can set Stealth Rock for 50% Health Damage upon switch in ▶️Glimmora Best Movesets |

"Garganacl with +1 Iron Defense boost can withstand a Solar Beam in sun" but Iron Defense only raises defense, not special defense? I'm sure it could still survive, but Iron Defense wouldn't help that
