・ Sludge Bomb ・ Earth Power ・ Tera Blast |
High Sp. Def stat, which is further boosted by an Assault Vest. Overgrow increases Giga Drain's healing at low health. |
Ability | Held Item | |
---|---|---|
Overgrow | Assault Vest |
The Ability chosen for this build is Overgrow. This will increase the damage of Venusaur's Grass-type moves when it is at low health.
The item chosen for this build is an Assault Vest. This increases Venusaur's Sp. Def stat by 50% as long as it only has damaging moves.
Giga Drain | Sludge Bomb |
Earth Power | Tera Blast |
Giga Drain is its best Grass-type STAB move because it heals Venusaur for a portion of the damage dealt.
Sludge Bomb is its strongest Poison-type STAB move that has a 30% chance to poison the target.
Earth Power is its main coverage move that lets it hit Poison and Steel-types that would otherwise resist its STAB moves.
Tera Blast becomes a Rock-type move once Venusaur Terastallizes.
Rock Tera Type Matchup | ||
---|---|---|
Weak to: | ||
(2x) | ||
Damaged Normally By: |
(1x) | |
Resists: | (0.5x) | |
Rock is the best Tera Type for this build because it turns Venusaur's Fire and Flying weaknesses into resists while also being a strong offensive coverage option with Tera Blast.
A full 252 EVs are placed in Venusaur's HP and Sp. Atk to make it bulky while still being able to do as much damage as possible. The extra 4 EVs are put into its Sp. Def to help round out its bulk.
A Modest nature is preferred to help maximize Venusaur's damage output.
Energy Ball | Does more damage than Giga Drain, but it doesn't heal Venusaur. |

Moveset | ・

Difficult to outspeed in Sun. Can be disruptive with Sleep Powder. Weather Ball gives it a coverage option that changes type depending on the weather. |
Ability | Held Item | |
---|---|---|
Chlorophyll | Focus Sash |
Chlorophyll is Venusaur's best Ability, as it allows Venusaur to be blisteringly fast under the Sun. While in Sun, it can offer offence and disruption through Leaf Storm and Sleep Powder respectively.
Equipping Venusaur with a Wide Lens can ensure that Sleep Powder can connect more consistently but at the cost of Venusaur's survivability.
Leaf Storm | Weather Ball |
Sleep Powder | Protect |
Leaf Storm is Venusaur's most damaging Grass-type STAB move, which lowers its Special Attack stat by two stages with each use.
Weather Ball turns into a Fire-type Move in Sun, which is useful for dealing with Steel-types and other Grass-types. This move changes types, depending on the weather. It becomes a Water-type Move in Rain, a Rock-type Move in Sand, and an Ice-type Move in Snow.
Sleep Powder, though inaccurate, can swing momentum in your favour whenever it connects. It is always worth a slot in Venusaur sets, despite it being a gamble to use.
Protect can help Venusaur on turns when it is in danger of taking a Fake Out.
Water Tera Type Matchup | ||
---|---|---|
Weak to: | ||
(2x) | ||
Damaged Normally By: |
(1x) | |
Resists: | (0.5x) | |
Water Tera gives Venusaur resistances to Fire and Ice while allowing it to take neutral damage from Flying and Psychic.
Alternatively, a Ghost Tera can give Venusaur immunity to Fake Out.
Full Special Attack and Speed EV investment ensures that Venusaur hits as hard and as fast as possible especially under the Sun, while the remaining 4 EVs are placed in HP to slightly boost its bulk.
Sludge Bomb | A good STAB option that is useful for damaging opposing Fairy-types and other Poison-weak Pokemon. |
---|---|
Giga Drain | A weaker alternative to Leaf Storm which can heal HP. |
Earth Power | Earth Power gives Venusaur a way to damage Heatran so that it is not completely walled by it. |
Damage Dealt by Venusaur |

---|---|
Item: Mystic Water | Leaf Storm 302 ~ 356 (172.5 ~ 203.4%) Guaranteed OHKO |
Item: Wiki Berry | Weather Ball in Sun 100 ~ 150 (75 ~ 100%) Guaranteed OHKO |
Game8's Competitive Damage Calculator
Venusaur is a great addition to Sun Teams, which will always make great use of its Chlorophyll Ability. With Chlorophyll's speed boost, Venusaur is able to be an offensive threat as well as an annoying disruptive Pokemon because of the threat of Sleep Powder.
It is important to keep Venusaur on the field for as long as possible so that it is able to be effective for longer. Keeping it on the field means we have to preserve Focus Sash, and protect it from moves like Fake Out, or protect Venusaur from getting double-targetted with Protect.
Sun is the best way to run Venusaur because it becomes blazingly fast in those conditions. Even with a Modest Nature, it will be able to outspeed the likes of non-Booster Energy Flutter Mane.
Naturally, partners that set or thrive under the Sun are great to have for Venusaur.
Hazards Lead | Special Wall | Physical Wall |
---|---|---|
Glimmora | Venusaur | Dondozo |
Glimmora is used to set up Toxic Spikes so that Pokemon that switch in on the opponent's side will get poisoned. This will put a timer on how long they will stay alive, making bulky Pokemon like Venusaur and Dondozo more valuable since they will be able to outlast the opponent's Pokemon.
Physical Attacker / Sun Setter | Support / Special Attacker |
---|---|
Groudon | Venusaur |
Support / Physical Attacker | Support / Physical Attacker |
Incineroar | Rillaboom |
Venusaur can be an effective partner to Groudon in Regulation G, as it has in the past, offering disruptive support with Sleep Powder, as well as being able to threaten Water-types that Groudon may have trouble with.
Rillaboom can protect Groudon from Water-types as well with its Priority Grassy Glide.
Incineroar can offer consistent support in a team with Sun, as it can Intimidate and pivot out with U-Turn or Parting Shot, as well as enjoy Sun-boosted Flare Blitz.
Pokemon that resist Venusaur's offensive options are always good to have when up against Sun teams with Venusaur. This makes it way less effective in battle.
Immunities to Sleep Powder are also very useful in the matchup, drastically reducing Venusaur's disruptive capabilities.
