Quark Drive | Booster Energy |
Iron Boulder's only ability is Quark Drive. For this build, it boosts Iron Boulder's Speed stat by 50% thanks to the Booster Energy it is using as its held item.
Mighty Cleave | Earthquake |
Close Combat | Swords Dance |
Mighty Cleave is its signature Rock-type STAB move that also goes through protection moves like Protect and Burning Bulwark. This is especially useful against walls that want to stall out turns with the mentioned moves.
Earthquake and Close Combat are its main coverage moves. When combined with Mighty Cleave, these three moves are impossible to resist unless the Pokemon is holding an Air Balloon.
Swords Dance is used to punish more passive Pokemon by boosting Iron Boulder's Attack by two stages, making it a very effective sweeper.
Stellar Tera Type Matchup | ||

Damaged Normally By: |
(1x) | |
Resists: | (0.5x) | |
Stellar is the best Tera Type for this build because it boosts the damage of Iron Boulder's great coverage moves.
Do note that even if it's a Stellar Type, it will still keep the defensive properties of its Rock/Psychic typing.
Stellar Tera Type Match-Ups Explained
A full 252 EVs are placed in Iron Boulder's Attack and Speed to make it hit as hard and fast as possible. The extra 4 EVs are put into its Sp. Def to help round out its bulk.
A Jolly nature is preferred to help Iron Boulder outspeed as many Pokemon as possible and to guarantee that Quark Drive gives a Speed boost.
Zen Headbutt
or Psycho Cut |
These two moves are its best Psychic-type STAB options with Zen Headbutt doing more damage and Psycho Cut being fully accurate. |
---|---|
Sacred Sword | Does less damage than Close Combat, but doesn't lower its defensive stats and ignores the opponent's stat changes. |

Mighty Cleave | Psycho Cut |
Swords Dance | Protect |
Mighty Cleave is its signature Rock-type STAB move that also goes through protection moves like Protect and Burning Bulwark.
Psycho Cut is a powerful Psychic-type STAB option that has an increased critical-hit chance.
Swords Dance is used to punish more passive Pokemon by boosting Iron Boulder's Attack by two stages, making it a very effective sweeper.
Protect is valuable for a Pokemon with so many weaknesses, giving it protection on crucial turns.

Game8's Competitive Damage Calculator
Iron Boulder doesn't have great defensive stats and a lot of weaknesses, meaning that it will be very easy to knock out if the opponent survives the turn.
Try to position Iron Boulder in spots where it can get quick untraded knockouts to maximize the value of its offensive potential.
Iron Boulder is best used on more hyper-offensive teams that are looking to get massive damage off before the opponent can retaliate.
Offensive Lead | Physical Attacker | Special Attacker |
---|---|---|
Iron Boulder | Urshifu Rapid-Strike Style | Chi-Yu |
Iron Boulder acts as a strong lead on this team with its great coverage moves and ability to boost itself against more passive leads.
Once Iron Boulder is KO'd, Urshifu can come in and knock out Pokemon that counter Chi-Yu to allow it to have a clean sweep in the endgame.
Physical Attacker | Support /Redirectionr |
---|---|
Iron Boulder | Amoonguss |
Support / Special Attacker | Special Attacker |
Farigiraf | Bloodmoon Ursaluna |
Amoonguss makes a great partner for Iron Boulder, as it can redirect super-effective hits intended for Iron Boulder to itself, which it conveniently resists. Iron Boulder can match up favorably against Fire-types who will want to attack into Amoonguss.
Farigiraf can protect Iron Boulder from Priority Moves, while Bloodmoon Ursaluna is a strong Pokemon to have in the end game thanks to its great bulk and ability to function in and out of Trick Room.
