Ability and Held Item

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Eternatus Image
Ability Held Item
Pressure Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Life Orb ImageLife Orb

Eternatus' only ability is Pressure, which causes the opponent to use one extra PP whenever they use a move.

The item chosen for this build is a Life Orb. This boosts its damage output by 30% and the damage it takes in return can easily be healed by Recover.

Moves Breakdown

Dynamax Cannon Sludge Bomb
Flamethrower Recover

Dynamax Cannon and Sludge Bomb are its best Dragon and Poison-type STAB moves with no downsides. Sludge Bomb has a bonus of having a 30% chance to poison the target.

Flamethrower is its main coverage move to help it deal with Steel-types that would otherwise resist both of its STAB moves.

Recover is used to heal Eternatus for half of its max HP. This is an amazing utility move because of Eternatus' large HP pool and because it offsets the damage inflicted by its Life Orb.

Best Tera Type: Water

Pokemon Fire Type Icon Pokemon Water Type Icon Pokemon Ice Type Icon Pokemon Steel Type Icon

Water is the best Tera Type for this build because it's a great defensive type with its only two weaknesses normally being resisted by Eternatus.

Do note however that Eternatus will still be weak to Pokemon like Iron Bundle and Alolan Ninetales who have access to Freeze-Dry.

EV Spread and Nature

A full 252 EVs are placed in Eternatus' Sp. Atk and Speed to make it hit as hard and fast as possible. The extra 4 EVs are placed into its HP to help round out its bulk.

A Timid nature is preferred to help Eternatus outspeed as many Pokemon as possible.

Other Viable Moves

Fire Blast A more powerful Fire-type move, but it only has 85% accuracy.
Draco Meteor Does more damage than Dynamax Cannon, but it reduces Eternatu's Sp. Atk by two stages every time it's used.
Agility Used to boost Eternatus' Speed, helping it outspeed Pokemon without it needing to hold an item like a Choice Scarf.

Pokeball Icon Needs an extra Speed boost to help it against all of the new fast Pokemon introduced in Gen 9.

Ability and Held Item

Pressure Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Choice Scarf ImageChoice Scarf

Eternatus' only ability is Pressure, which causes the opponent to use one extra PP whenever they use a move.

The item chosen for this build is a Choice Scarf. This is important because it helps Eternatus outspeed all of the new fast Pokemon like Chien-Pao and Miraidon.

Moves Breakdown

Dynamax Cannon Sludge Bomb
Flamethrower Draco Meteor

Dynamax Cannon and Sludge Bomb are its best Dragon and Poison-type STAB moves with no downsides. Sludge Bomb has a bonus of having a 30% chance to poison the target.

Flamethrower is its main coverage move to help it deal with Steel-types that would otherwise resist both of its STAB moves.

Draco Meteor is used to get a quick OHKO on Pokemon that survive getting hit by Dynamax Cannon.

Solar Beam Surprises any teams with Sun setters like Groudon or Koraidon with a move that they might not expect to KO one of their Pokemon.

How to Use Eternatus Effectively

Position Eternatus Against Pokemon That Are Slower Than It

Scarlet and Violet introduced new powerful Pokemon that can easily outspeed Eternatus, either naturally or with an item like a Booster Energy.

Make sure to bring out Eternatus in a spot where it cannot get quickly KO'd by a faster Pokemon since it is no longer considered to be one of the fastest Pokemon in the game.

How to Build a Team with Eternatus

Eternatus is best used on a team that needs a fast and bulky attacker that can do a lot of damage while still being able to take hits and stay alive on the battlefield.

Sample Singles Team

Offensive Lead Special Attacker Special Attacker
Urshifu Rapid-Strike Style ImageUrshifu Rapid-Strike Style Eternatus ImageEternatus Flutter Mane ImageFlutter Mane

Urshifu Rapid Strike acts as a great offensive lead to deal with Pokemon that its allies may be weak to.

Eternatus is used as an offensive threat that can also come in to take hits for its allies and prevent them from getting knocked out by a super-effective attack.

Flutter Mane can then come in and utilize its amazing Sp. Atk and Speed to clean up any surviving Pokemon on the opponent's side.
