Iron Treads has great physical bulk, which allows it to function as a lead support for most teams. While its Special Defense is relatively low, equipping it with Assault Vest gives it a much needed boost to round off its defenses.

Earthquake and Iron Head are its main STAB moves and provides great coverage against common Pokemon, particularly Fire, Fairy, and Rock-types. Knock Off gives it some team utility, and is especially useful against defensive Pokemon that rely in Leftovers for healing.

Rapid Spin is its last move and allows the Paradox Pokemon to remove Stealth Rock and Spikes from the field. Since it carries Knock Off, spinblockers like Gengar risk getting hit by a super effective attack if they decide to stay on the field with Iron Treads.

Finally, we're using Ground Tera type for this build to remove Iron Treads' weakness to Fighting-type moves while also powering up its Earthquake.

Other Viable Moves

Steel Roller A good alternative to Iron Head that removes terrain, but is only useable when there's a terrain present in the field.
Bulldoze A weaker alternative to Earthquake but lowers the target Pokemon's Speed stat by one stage.

Stealth Rock

Iron Treads is a great defensive pivot thanks to its high Defense stat and access to Stealth Rock. This build uses Ground Tera type too remove its Fighting-type weakness, while giving it Leftovers to provide passive healing.

Although this build's man STAB is still Earthquake, Body Press and Iron Defense are its main moves. Body Press uses Iron Treads' Defense stat when calculating damage, so increasing it with Iron Defense allows it to hit hard while also increasing its physical bulk.

Other Viable Moves

Rapid Spin A good alternative to Stealth Rock if there's already a hazard setter in the team.

Ability and Held Item

As with all Future Paradox Pokemon, Iron Treads has Quark Drive. But even without ways to trigger it, it is still an effective Pokemon on its own.

Assault Vest gives Iron Treads a much needed boost to its Special Defense.

Moves Breakdown

Earthquake and Heavy Slam are its main STAB moves and provides great coverage against common Pokemon, particularly Fire, Fairy, and Rock-types. Ice Spinner gives it some team utility against Dragon-types and against Indeedee-F's Psychic Surge whose Psychic Terrain it can handily remove.

Stomping Tantrum allows Iron Treads to deal single-target Ground-type damage when it has to, and when Earthquake isn't the best option.

Best Tera Type

Ground Tera type is used for this build to remove Iron Treads' weakness to Fighting-type moves while also powering up its Earthquake and Stompint Tantrum.

EV Spread and Nature

188 HP and 28 Special Defense with Assault Vest gives Iron Treads enough Special bulk to withstand most Special Attacks. 220 is put into its Attack stat to ensure that Iron Treads hits hard.

An Adamant Nature is chosen for this build, as it ensures that Iron Treads' attacks deal good damage.

Other Viable Moves

Wild Charge A powerful option to use against Water-types like Iron Bundle.

How to Use Iron Treads Effectively

A Bulky Defensive Pivot with Key Resistances

Iron Treads is a great defensive pivot as it's resistant to common attacking types in competitive play. It's 4x resistance to Rock-types, in particular, allows it to check the likes of Tyranitar and Glimmora.

How to Build a Team with Iron Treads

Iron Treads is best used in balanced teams that are in need of a bulky Ground-type or defensive pivot to setup Stealth Rock or remove hazards with Rapid Spin.

Sample Singles Build

Defensive Pivot Special Attacker Physical Attacker
Iron Treads ImageIron Treads Armarouge ImageArmarouge Chien-Pao ImageChien-Pao

Iron Treads serves as this team's defensive pivot, setting up Stealth Rock and using Rapid Spin to remove entry hazards. Both Armarouge and Chien-Pao appreciate a hazard-free field as they are both weak to Stealth Rock and Spikes.

Sample Doubles Team

Tailwind Setter / Special Attacker Physical Attacker
Iron Jugulis ImageIron Jugulis Palafin ImagePalafin
Physical Attacker Support / Special Attacker
Iron Treads ImageIron Treads Pelipper ImagePelipper

Iron Jugulis can set Tailwind for its teammates with middling Speed such as Palafin and Iron Treads. Palafin can switch out for Pelipper, who can set Rain with its Drizzle Ability, and increase the accuracy of Iron Jugulis' Hurricanes.

Iron Treads is a Physical Attacker who benefits from Tailwind, and can be an offensive threat once its Fire weakness is mitigated by the Rain.

Counters for Iron Treads

Take Advantage of its Weaknesses

While Iron Treads is bulky and relatively fast, it's also weak to very common attacking types. Lack of a reliable recovery move means Iron Treads is forced to rely on Leftovers, and it can't stay on the field if the opposing Pokemon has access to moves that it's weak to.

A bit confused as to why EV's wouldn't want to be maxed out. They aren't maxed out in the assault vest build. Is this intentional or an accidental omission? New'ish to ranked battles
