Paldean Tauros (Water Form) made a strong showing in the 2023 San Diego Regionals, being in the winning team as well as in various top teams in the tournament. Its strength comes from its ability to match up favorably against Gholdengo, Hydreigon, Kingambit and Dondozo.

Close Combat and Wave Crash are its main STAB moves, with Aqua Jet giving Paldean Tauros a Priority option that's useful for Pokemon hanging on with 1 HP from Focus Sash.

Players may identify Paldean Tauros as a win-condition and might want to target it down. In this case, Protect is a good move to keep Paldean Tauros healthy.

Mirror Herb is a very powerful Held Item for Paldean Tauros, as it allows it to get +2 Attack if it Intimidates into a Defiant Pokemon like Annihilape or Kingambit. Alternatively, Safety Goggles is also a good choice to help it if your team has trouble against Amoonguss.

Paldean Tauros makes great use of Steel Tera, as it turns its weaknesses to Grass, Flying, Psychic and Fairy into resistances.

Other Viable Moves

Raging Bull Raging Bull as an option to deal damage without any drawbacks. Additionally, Raging Bull has the ability to break Light Screen, Reflect, and Aurora Veil.
Stomping Tantrum Stomping Tantrum is useful for dealing super-effective damage to Ground-weak Pokemon like Gholdengo

How to Use Paldean Tauros (Water Form) Effectively

Bring It In Late Game

Paldean Tauros is best positioned late into a game, when its counters have been taken out. With its counters out of the way, Paldean Tauros is very difficult to take out, especially with its whopping 7 resistances.

Punish Tera Steel Gholdengos and Kingambits

Gholdengo players may become greedy early into a match and terastallize their Gholdengo into Steel out of fear of getting KOd. Paldean Tauros can come in, outspeed, and KO with Close Combat after they've lost their Ghost typing.

Kingambit may also find itself in a difficult spot if it has to go up against Paldean Tauros, as it will be in danger of taking a super-effective Close Combat.

How to Build a Team with Paldean Tauros (Water Form)

Pokemon who can quickly KO Fairy-types are great teammates for Paldean Tauros. It may still struggle defensively on the Special side, so a strong front end may clear the way for an endgame where Paldean Tauros can come in and dominate.

Physical Attacker Physical Attacker
Paldean Tauros (Fighting/Water Form) ImagePaldean Tauros (Fighting/Water Form) Baxcalibur ImageBaxcalibur

Both Meowscarada and Gholdengo threaten opposing Gholdengo into Terastallizing, otherwise it may easily get KOd by a super-effective Knock Off or Shadow Ball. As shown by 2023 San Diego Regional Champion, Jiseok Lee, having Paldean Tauros in the back is effective for securing wins.

Cycling Paldean Tauros in and out of the active position also works as counterplay to opposing Dondozo and Tatsugiri as repeated use of Intimidate will reduce Dondozo's Attack buffs back to neutral or worse. This is effective unless Tatsugiri is in its Curly Form, in which case Dondozo can boost its Attack with Order Up.

Baxcalibur is a good Tera option and partner for Paldean Tauros as it can handily KO Grass and Flying-types.
