Best Pokemon For Catching

Pokemon That Can Learn False Swipe and Can Inflict Status Effect

A Pokemon's catch rate increases the less HP it has and when it's inflicted with a status effect.

With this in mind, we recommend Pokemon that can learn any move that can inflict a status effect and False Swipe - a move that leaves the opponent with exactly 1 HP.

Tips on How to Catch Pokemon

Tips on How to Catch Pokemon

Get the Pokemon's HP in the Red

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV Ditto in the Red

Pokemon whose HP is in the red are easier to catch than a Pokemon with full health. If you're aiming to catch a Pokemon, do your best to reduce its HP without killing it so you'll have a better chance of catching it.

Best Moves to Reduce Health

Best Moves to Reduce Health
False Swipe Leaves the target with at least 1 HP.
Super Fang The user halves the opponent's current HP.
Night Shade
or
Seismic Toss
The damage of this attack is equal to the user's current level.

In addition to False Swipe, which always leaves an opposing Pokemon with at least 1 HP, there are other moves you can use to reduce a Pokemon's HP.

Try to use Super Fang, Night Shade, or Seismic Toss on Pokemon you want to catch to deal consistent and predictable damage.

Inflict a Status Condition

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV Ditto in the Red and Asleep

Once you've whittled the Pokemon's HP down to the red, you can inflict a status effect to it to further increase your chances of catching it.

Pokemon that are asleep and frozen are easier to catch but paralysis does the job too. Avoid inflicting poison or burn on the Pokemon so you don't accidentally kill it.

Below are the best moves you can use to inflict a status effect on an opposing Pokemon.

Best Moves to Inflict a Status Condition

Best Moves to Inflict a Status Condition
Spore Puts the opponent to sleep.
Hypnosis Puts the opponent to sleep.
Thunder Wave Paralyzes the opponent.
Yawn The target falls asleep at the end of the next turn.

Use a Special Poke Ball

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV Dusk Ball

Further increase your chances of catching a specific type of Pokemon by using special Poke Balls.

These special Poke Balls work best on certain types of Pokemon. Some of them even work well on your first encounter of a Pokemon or if you're trying to catch one at night.

When used on the right Pokemon at the right place and time, these special Poke Balls even have a higher catch rate than your regular Ultra Ball.
