The best Pokemon for catching in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV) are Persian, Breloom, and Gallade. Read on to learn the best Pokemon for catching, where to catch them, and other tips on how to catch Pokemon.
A Pokemon's catch rate increases the less HP it has and when it's inflicted with a status effect.
With this in mind, we recommend Pokemon that can learn any move that can inflict a status effect and False Swipe - a move that leaves the opponent with exactly 1 HP.
Persian | ・It's easy to catch outside of Medali. ・Evolves from Meowth at Lv. 28. ・Gets the strongest False Swipe with STAB and Technician boost. ・Has great utility through Thunder Wave and Thief. ・As a bonus, it can learn Pay Day for easy money farming. |
Breloom | ・Shroomish is easy to catch and evolves early at Lv. 23. ・Do not catch a Breloom directly as it cannot learn Spore. You need to level up Shroomish to Lv. 40 so it learns Spore, then evolve it. ・Can learn False Swipe, and Spore via Shroomish. ・Has high attack power so it can easily damage opponents. ・Has Poison Heal. ・Can also get Technician but only through hidden ability. |
Gallade | ・Can learn Hypnosis, Thunder Wave, and False Swipe. ・Ralts, its pre-evolution, can learn Mean Look through egg moves. ・Needs a Dawn Stone to evolve. |
Hisuian Decidueye | ・Is able to use False Swipe against Ghost-Types thanks to Scrappy ・Can use Taunt to prevent the use of self-KO moves like Memento. ・Has recovery options with Synthesis or Roost |

Tips on How to Catch Pokemon |
---|
|
Pokemon whose HP is in the red are easier to catch than a Pokemon with full health. If you're aiming to catch a Pokemon, do your best to reduce its HP without killing it so you'll have a better chance of catching it.
Best Moves to Reduce Health | |
---|---|
False Swipe | Leaves the target with at least 1 HP. |
Super Fang | The user halves the opponent's current HP. |
Night Shade
or Seismic Toss |
The damage of this attack is equal to the user's current level. |
In addition to False Swipe, which always leaves an opposing Pokemon with at least 1 HP, there are other moves you can use to reduce a Pokemon's HP.
Try to use Super Fang, Night Shade, or Seismic Toss on Pokemon you want to catch to deal consistent and predictable damage.
Once you've whittled the Pokemon's HP down to the red, you can inflict a status effect to it to further increase your chances of catching it.
Pokemon that are asleep and frozen are easier to catch but paralysis does the job too. Avoid inflicting poison or burn on the Pokemon so you don't accidentally kill it.
Below are the best moves you can use to inflict a status effect on an opposing Pokemon.
Best Moves to Inflict a Status Condition | |
---|---|
Spore | Puts the opponent to sleep. |
Hypnosis | Puts the opponent to sleep. |
Thunder Wave | Paralyzes the opponent. |
Yawn | The target falls asleep at the end of the next turn. |
Further increase your chances of catching a specific type of Pokemon by using special Poke Balls.
These special Poke Balls work best on certain types of Pokemon. Some of them even work well on your first encounter of a Pokemon or if you're trying to catch one at night.
When used on the right Pokemon at the right place and time, these special Poke Balls even have a higher catch rate than your regular Ultra Ball.

Collecting gym badges also makes it easier for you to catch Pokemon at any level.
Every time you defeat a gym leader, they will tell you what level a Pokemon would be easier for you to catch. The more badges you have, the easier it will be for you to catch Pokemon at an even higher level.
If you need to prevent pokemon from using explosion/takedown. Shiftry is a decent choice. Have it learn: False Swipe Take Down Explosion Imprison Use imprison first turn, then False Swipe the pokemon down.
