Ability and Held Item

Ability Held Item
Contrary Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Sitrus Berry ImageSitrus Berry

The Ability chosen for this build is Contrary. This lets Lurantis boost its stats whenever it uses one of its attacking moves instead of its stats getting lowered.

The item chosen for this build is a Sitrus Berry. This gives Lurantis a more immediate form of healing so it doesn't need to use Synthesis as often.

Moves Breakdown

Leaf Storm Superpower
Tera Blast Synthesis

Leaf Storm is its best Grass-type STAB move since it boosts Lurantis' Sp. Atk by two stages instead of it getting lowered thanks to Contrary.

Super Power is its main coverage move that boosts its Attack and Defense, similar to Leaf Storm.

Tera Blast also benefits from Contrary by boosting its Attack and Sp. Atk when Lurantis is Terastallized and it's used against Terastallized opponents.

Synthesis lets Lurantis heal back some of its lost health, making it stick around in battle longer.

Best Tera Type: Stellar

Stellar is the best Tera Type for this build because Tera Blast also benefits from Contrary under the right circumstances.

Note that even though it is a Stellar Type, it keeps the defensive properties of its regular Grass typing.

Stellar Tera Type Match-Ups Explained

EV Spread and Nature

A full 252 EVs are placed in Lurantis' HP and Defense to make it as physically bulky as possible. The extra 4 EVs are put into its Sp. Def to help round out its bulk.

A Relaxed nature is preferred to minimize the damage it takes from physical attacks while also making sure that none of its offensive stats are lowered.

Other Viable Moves

Giga Drain
or
Leech Life
Gives Lurantis other forms of healing to help it stay alive longer in battle, especially after Leaf Storm and Superpower boosts respectively.
Knock Off A good utility option since it removes the opponent's held item.
Skitter Smack Further punishes physical attackers by reducing their Attack stat by one stage.

How to Use Lurantis Effectively

Put it in a Safe Spot to Boost Its Stats

While Lurantis has okay HP and balanced defenses, it is still very slow making it prone to getting knocked out by faster Pokemon.

Either eliminate faster opponents first or have an ally that can support Lurantis so that it can safely boost its stats.

Avoid Opposing Special Attackers

Unless Lurantis has Sp. Def investment, it has no other way to boost its Sp. Def stat. Try to avoid or knock out the opponent's special attackers so that Lurantis doesn't get OHKO'd and lose its buffs.

How to Build a Team with Lurantis

Lurantis appreciates teammates who can support it with Screens or moves like Follow Me and Trick Room so that it can become a threatening boosted attacker.

Sample Singles Team

Screens Support Mixed Attacker Physical Attacker
Alolan Ninetales ImageAlolan Ninetales Lurantis ImageLurantis Ogerpon (Cornerstone Mask) ImageOgerpon (Cornerstone Mask)

Alolan Ninetales is a great support for Lurantis since it can use Aurora Veil to set up Screens and reduce the damage its allies take.

Once Screens have been set up, Lurantis can come in and more easily tank hits while it is setting up Leaf Storm and Superpower boosts with Contrary.

Finally, Cornerstone Ogerpon is used because of its Rock-typing that counters most of Lurantis' weaknesses.

Do note however that these three Pokemon are susceptible to Poison-types, so make sure to save your Terastallization to help deal with those Pokemon.
