Tera Blast

Tatsugiri has a small niche in Singles as a special attacker, boosting its dual STAB Hydro Pump and Dragon Pulse with Nasty Plot.

This build uses Fire Tera type so that it can stay on the field against Fairy-types, and also gives it a strong Fire-type Tera Blast.

Storm Drain ensures that it's still immune to Water-type moves once it terastallizes and will receive a +1 Special Attack boost instead.

Other Viable Moves

Draco Meteor A stronger Dragon-type STAB but lowers its Special Attack by 2 stages.
Surf A weaker but more accurate alternative to Surf.

This Tatsugiri build is made for a dedicated Dondozo and Flamigo Doubles build with its Commander Ability. Curly Form is the preferred Tatsugiri form in order for Dondozo to get an Attack boost each time it uses Order Up.

Protect ensures that Toxic Orb activates safely, while Endure protects it from getting OHKO'd before getting Dondozo on the field. Draco Meteor and Hydro Pump are its two main STAB moves and are mostly used as filler and to prevent Tatsugiri from getting shut down by Taunt.

The goal of this build is to KO Tatsugiri after it gives Dondozo the Commander boost. Flamigo can not switch in unless Tatsugiri faints, which is normally impossible since opponents can not target it once it is inside Dondozo's mouth.

Toxic Orb ensures that Tatsugiri will faint while inside Dondozo's mouth, allowing Flamigo to switch in and copy the stat boosts with Costar.

Draco Meteor

This is another Curly Form Tatsugiri build that just needs to give Dondozo a Commander boost and then faint so that Flamigo can switch in. Instead of relying on Toxic Orb, this build requires a partner that can setup with Perish Song. Mental Herb is the recommended item for this build to protect it from getting shut down by Taunt.

This is a generally safer strategy since once Perish Song starts to count down, Tatsugiri only needs to waste turns before switching in Dondozo once its Perish Count is at 1. Protect and Endure allow it to waste turns and avoid getting KO'd, while Substitute also protects it from paralysis.

Draco Meteor is its only attacking move and is only used as filler, but can still deal respectable damage thanks to its neutral coverage.

How to Use Tatsugiri Effectively

A Niche Special Attacker in Singles

Tatsugiri has a limited niche in Singles since, while it has respectable Special Attack, it's middling Speed and poor coverage mean that it doesn not offer much synergy to teams.

Its most effective build is as a Nasty Plot sweeper, terastallizing into a Fire-type to give it extra coverage with Fire-type Tera Blast.

Pair with Dondozo in Doubles

Tatsugiri shines in Doubles thanks to its Commander Ability, which gives its ally Dondozo +2 in all stats. This also causes Tatsugiri to go inside Dondozo's mouth, making it immune to damage.

Despite this, Tatsugiri is mostly used only for Commander and it is best to find ways to KO it so that Flamigo or another Pokemon can switch in alongside Dondozo.

How to Build a Team with Tatsugiri

In Singles, Tatsugiri is best used in more defensive-oriented team compositions so that its teammates can cover its weaknesses.

In Doubles, Tatsugiri is often used alongside Dondozo in an offensive-oriented team revolving around Flamigo getting the same Commander boosts with its Costar Ability.

Sample Singles Team

Lead Support Special Attacker Offensive Pivot
Grimmsnarl ImageGrimmsnarl Tatsugiri ImageTatsugiri Wash Rotom ImageWash Rotom

This is a straightforward defensive build with Grimmsnarl setting up Reflect and Light Screen so that Tatsugiri can safely switch in and setup with Nasty Plot.

Wash Rotom serves as this team's offensive pivot and is mostly used to spread status with Will-O-Wisp and take on bulky Water-types that Tatsugiri struggles against.

Sample Doubles Build with Toxic Orb

Lead Support Special Attacker
Grimmsnarl ImageGrimmsnarl Tatsugiri ImageTatsugiri
Physical Attacker Physical Attacker
Dondozo ImageDondozo Flamigo ImageFlamigo

This is a standard offensive Doubles team featuring Dondozo and Flamigo, with Grimmsnarl providing dual screen support. Curly Form Tatsugiri is the preferred form for this setup, although the Stretchy Form is an option to give Flamigo an additional Speed boost when Dondozo uses Order Up.

・Stall the opposing team with Grimmsnarl until Tatsugiri reaches critical health. Use Taunt to shut down opposing defensive Pokemon or wear them down with Foul Play.
3
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Grimmsnarl Image Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Dondozo Image + Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Tatsugiri Image Switch in your main attackers

・Once Tatsugiri is at sufficiently low health, use Parting Shot to switch Grimmsnarl out with Dondozo which will get the Commander boost from Tatsugiri.

・While Tatsugiri is still alive, use Order Up to give Dondozo an Attack or Speed increase.

Note: At sufficiently low health, the poison status will cause Tatsugiri to faint while inside Dondozo's mouth, allowing you to switch in another Pokemon on the next turn.
4

Counters for Tatsugiri

Overpower it with Super Effective Attacks

Tatsugiri is relatively easy to defeat in Singles since its lackluster defense means it can not take repeated super effective hits, and it's even possible to outright KO it.

In Doubles, it is always the priority to defeat first to prevent Dondozo from getting boosts once it switches in.

Absolutely awful (at least the doubles build).. Since your post was lacking in detail — I wanted to point out to the novice who drafted this - that both endure and protect are categorized as protection moves. Therefore, there is a 50% chance of endure failing after using protect - equivalent to using protect consecutively. Hopefully not too many folks have been burned by this. Game8 - Please don’t create builds if there are no QC checks being done & consider re-assigning the author of this.
