Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Play Rough Bug

Players who have raised an Azumarill with Play Rough for Tera Raids have noticed that Play Rough seems to cause the opponent to gain HP in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV). It's clear that the attack is bugged in some way, but according to Pokemon Support, the bug isn't quite so malicious as it seems.

Is Play Rough Bugged?

Play Rough is Only Visually Bugged

Charizard seemingly gains HP after Play Rough is used.

Numerous players have reported a rubber banding effect when using Azumarill in Raid Battles, in which they appear to do heavy damage, but their opponent regains health suddenly afterwards.

This issue has been acknowledged by The Pokemon Company on their official Japanese support site. The translation of the text is given below.

BUG: The HP Gauge does not update correctly in Tera Raid Battles for some moves like Play Rough

When some moves are used, the appearance of the HP gauge sometimes does not match the actual damage dealt due to a bug.

However, the damage of the attack is still correctly dealt to the opponent.

This bug will be addressed in a future update.

Although this can be quite frustrating, the good news is that Play Rough is doing damage accurately, so there's no need to rush to change your Azumarill's moveset or raise a new Pokemon. The problem is simply that Play Rough never actually does quite as much damage as appears to, and when the HP gauge updates with the correct damage, the opponent appears to regain HP.

Should You Still Use Play Rough?

Play Rough is OK to Use

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV Azumarill with Belly Drum

Although Play Rough's apparent damage output can make it seem even stronger than it really is, Azumarill is still a powerhouse in Raid Battles, and Play Rough is an important part of that. After maximizing its Attack with Belly Drum, Play Rough can hit with 90 Power STAB, making it Azumarill's strongest attack for pure damage output.

We advise players to ignore the HP bar bug and use Azumarill with Play Rough anyway to get the best results in Raid Battles.
