Gengar's excellent Speed makes it a great lead to check opposing leads. Since most opponents will expect a full offensive build, Gengar can surprise setup sweepers using Swords Dance or defensive leads using Stealth Rock by locking them in to those moves with Encore.
Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb are its main STAB moves and hit hard with full Special Attack investment. Destiny Bond is a last-ditch move that allows Gengar to KO another Pokemon when it faints after using up its Focus Sash.
This Gengar build can run either Fairy or Ghost Tera type. Fairy gives it immunity to Dragon-type moves, particularly fellow offensive lead Dragapult who can break Focus Sash with Dragon Darts.
Ghost Tera type is a safer option that removes its Ground-type weakness while also boosting the power of Shadow Ball.
Will-O-Wisp | A great alternative to Encore that allows Gengar to more aggressively shut down physical atackers. |
---|---|
Nasty Plot | Can replace Destiny Bond for a more offensive-oriented lead. |

Gengar's great Speed makes it a great offensive lead in Doubles thanks to its great dual STAB and powerful moves. Unlike other lead attackers, Gengar can check slower physical setup sweepers such as Garchomp and Salamence, and cut their attack with Will-O-Wisp.
Substitute allows it to bait slower attackers into activating Cursed Body which has a 30% chance to disable the last attack used against Gengar and still works even if the move hits the Substitute.
Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb are its main STAB moves and allows Gengar to check the likes of Gholdengo and Meowscarada. Poison is the preferred Tera type so that Gengar still receives healing from Black Sludge, while also boosting the power of Sludge Bomb.
Nasty Plot | Can replace Will-O-Wisp and lets Gengar function as a more aggresive substitute attacker. |
---|---|
Dazzling Gleam | Can replace Sludge Bomb and allows Gengar to damage Dark-types. |

Item: Leftovers | Shadow Ball 170-204 (80.5 - 96.6%) nl] Guaranteed 2HKO |
Item: Sitrus Berry | Sludge Bomb 67-79 (35.8 - 42.2%) Guaranteed 3HKO |
Item: Sitrus Berry | Sludge Bomb 70-84 (31.9 - 38.3%) 95.3% Chance to 3HKO |
In Singles, Gengar has a niche as a lead attacker that can shut down opposing leads with Encore and Will-O-Wisp. This gives it some utility compared to more conventional attackers like Gholdengo and Flutter Mane, and allows it to fit perfectly in more balanced team compositions.
In Doubles, Gengar is best used as a Substitute attacker due to its relatively low defenses and so that it can safely use its moves without getting KO'd on the next turn.
Setting up a Substitute also allows it to safely activate Cursed Body, which has a 30% chance to disable the last move used against it.
In Singles, Gengar is a great lead for more balanced team compositions that appreciate disruptive support moves like Encore and Will-O-Wisp.
In Doubles, Gengar can fit into almiost any team but appreciates redirection support due to its low defenses.
Lead Attacker | Defensive Pivot | Physical Attacker |
---|---|---|
Gengar | Garganacl | Garchomp |
Gengar's main role is to shut down setup sweepers and defensive leads by locking them into their moves with Encore, while also damaging them with Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb.
Garganacl is a great choice for defensive pivot for this team, inflicting Salt Cure on defensive Pokemon that can wall Gengar such as Toxapex.
Garchomp is this team's main physical attacker and appreciates Encore support so that it can safely switch in and setup with Swords Dance.
Lead Attacker | Redirection Support |
---|---|
Gengar | Amoonguss |
Physical Attacker | Special Attacker |
Kingambit | Volcarona |
With Amoonguss providing redirection support with Rage Powder, Gengar can safely setup Substitute and inflict Will-O-Wisp on the opposing team.
Kingambit is this team's main physical attacker and gets an Attack boost if either Gengar or Amoonguss faints thanks to its Supreme Overlord Ability.
Like Gengar, Volcarona also appreciates redirection support and a good switch in to when Gengar pivots from the team. Since Gengar is very susceptible to physical attacks, it can bait an opponent into attacking it and switch to Volcarona and potentially activate its Flame BodyAbility.
Although Gengar's main niche is to provide utility to the team with its support moves, it has relatively low bulk and requires Focus Sash to take a hit. A sufficiently powerful physical attack, even if it's not super effective, can easily take down Gengar.
