New Indigo Disk DLC Pokemon are Available

With the release of the Indigo Disk DLC, new Pokemon and moves are now allowed to be used in Regulation F competitive battles.

This is a big shift in the meta since a bunch of strong Pokemon are now considered weaker due to new Pokemon being more prevalent, while weaker Pokemon got big buffs thanks to new moves or teammates being added to the game.

Criteria for Tier Placings

The following are the criteria to be met when ranking Pokemon for Ranked Singles.

Tier Criteria
SS Tier SS Tier Pokemon have great offensive stats and movepools, are easy to use, and can make any team they're part of stronger. These Pokemon are often setup sweepers that have an easy time setting up with their boosting moves.
S Tier As the weeks go by and the metagame develops, Pokemon can go back and forth between SS and S Tier. These Pokemon are still solid additions to your team and are essential to Ranked Battle.
A Tier Pokemon in A Tier are often the best of their type, but are usually outclassed by Pokemon in the SS and S Tier. These Pokemon also often have great type matchups against SS and S Tier Pokemon.
B Tier B Tier Pokemon are often versatile and have effective builds, but there are generally better options in the higher tiers.
C Tier C Tier Pokemon offer good moves and stats but are often locked in specialized builds. These Pokemon have specific niches in the metagame and are outclassed by Pokemon in the higher tiers.
UR Icon UR (Unranked) Pokemon are not currently legal for ranked battle however may be valid in certain online competitions. When made available these Pokemon will surely shake up the metagame.

Contributions to a Battle

These Tiers are determined by how drastically a match is altered by a Pokemon being on the field. Whether it be Redirection, Support, or a strong Offensive presence, a Pokemon's impactfulness determines its placement on our list.

Team Synergy is Taken into Account

The criteria for best Pokemon also take into account team synergy or how well each Pokemon works in conjunction with its teammates.

Tera-Type Potential

The potential of Pokemon Terastallizing is also taken into account as this mechanic not only gives it an extra STAB of a different type, it can also remove its glaring weaknesses and give it new resistances.

Best Pokemon to Terastallize

Featured Pairs and Cores

Pokemon often have synergy with each other, which allows them to work together for good results. Featured below are some of these Pokemon and the teammates they would frequently have.

VGC Doubles Teambuilding

Fire-Water-Grass

Fire-Water-Grass
Pokemon Incineroar ImageIncineroar Urshifu Rapid-Strike Style ImageUrshifu Rapid-Strike Style Rillaboom ImageRillaboom
Ability Intimidate Unseen Fist Grassy Surge
Held Item Sitrus Berry Mystic Water Assault Vest
Role Support / Physical Attacker Physical Attacker Support / Physical Attacker

Incineroar, Rapid Strike Urshifu, and Rillaboom form a solid Fire-Water-Grass Balance Core that can cover each other's weaknesses. These three offer perfect type synergy and give your team defensive switch options. They are also able to hit a variety of types for super-effective thanks to each Pokemon's coverage options. These three Pokemon are usually accompanied by Pokemon with Speed Control options such as Tornadus-I, Thundurus-I, or Regieleki.

Proto-Sun

Sun
Pokemon Tornadus (Incarnate Forme) ImageTornadus (Incarnate Forme) Gouging Fire ImageGouging Fire Walking Wake ImageWalking Wake
Ability Prankster Protosynthesis Protosynthesis
Held Item Covert Cloak Clear Amulet Booster Energy
Role Support / Special Attacker Physical Attacker Special Attacker

Gouging Fire and Walking Wake are amazing attackers on a Sun team because their STAB attacks get heavily boosted and they both get a Protosynthesis boost. They also need a support like Tornadus-I to setup the Sun with Sunny Day and give Speed boosts with Tailwind.

Additionaly, if the opponent tries to weaken Gounging Fire's Fire-type attacks by setting up then Rain, Walking Wake's Hydro Steam damage will still get boosted by 50%.

Regulation F Rain

Rain
Pokemon Archaludon ImageArchaludon Tornadus (Incarnate Forme) ImageTornadus (Incarnate Forme) Pelipper ImagePelipper
Ability Stamina Prankster Drizzle
Held Item Assault Vest Covert Cloak Focus Sash
Role Special Attacker Support / Special Attacker Support / Physical Attacker

Archadulon's signature move Electro Shot is an amazing attack in the rain since it gives it a +1 Sp. Atk boost and fires off on the same turn. Pair it up with Pokemon like Tornadus-I or Pelipper that can set up the Rain and support Archaludon with moves like Tailwind and Wide Guard.

Regulation F Psy Spam

Psychic Spam
Pokemon Indeedee (Female) ImageIndeedee (Female) Iron Crown ImageIron Crown
Ability Psychic Surge Quark Drive
Held Item Psychic Seed Choice Specs
Role Support Special Attacker

Iron Crown is a much better user of Expanding Force compared to Armarouge due to its natural defensive stats and higher Speed. This means that Indeedee no longer needs to assist in setting up Trick Room and can go for Helping Hand boosts instead.

Regulation E Trick Room

Trick Room
Pokemon Dusclops ImageDusclops Conkeldurr ImageConkeldurr
Ability Frisk Guts
Held Item Eviolite Flame Orb
Role Support Physical Attacker

Trick Room remains powerful in Regulation E with the reintroduction of Dusclops as the premiere Trick Room Setter, possibly overtaking Cresselia. While Dusclops would do well with Ursaluna, it could also work well with another Guts Attacker in Conkeldurr.

Weezing

Weezing Team
Pokemon Weezing ImageWeezing Slaking ImageSlaking
Ability Neutralizing Gas Truant
Held Item Sitrus Berry Silk Scarf
Role Support / Special Attacker Physical Attacker

Weezing's return in Regulation E enables strategies involving Slaking, a Pokemon with an otherwise disadvantageous Ability in Truant. Weezing's Ability shuts off every other ability, giving way to powerful attackers like Slaking.

We could also see Weezing being paired with Paradox Pokemon, who do not always require their Abilities to be activated for them to be useful. Iron Hands for instance has found success in previous Regulation Formats without the need for Booster Energy or Electric Terrain.

Regulation E Perish Trap

Perish Trap
Pokemon Politoed ImagePolitoed Gothitelle ImageGothitelle
Ability Drizzle Shadow Tag
Held Item Sitrus Berry Iapapa Berry
Role Perish Song User Trapper

Politoed works as a slow Perish Song user, which almost always allows it to faint last in Perish Song. Its sizeable bulk allows it to withstand multiple hits. With a defensive Tera Type and Terastallization, Politoed becomes even harder to KO.

It partners nicely with Gothitelle, who already has good bulk by itself, and has the powerful Shadow Tag Ability, which prevents opponents from switching out, except for Ghost-types.

Regulation D Trick Room

Trick Room
Pokemon Ursaluna ImageUrsaluna Cresselia ImageCresselia Iron Hands ImageIron Hands
Ability Levitate Guts Quark Drive
Held Item Mental Herb Flame Orb Assault Vest
Role Support / Special Attacker Physical Attacker Support / Physical Attacker

Trick Room is even more powerful in Regulation D with the introduction of Cresselia as the premiere Trick Room Setter, and a new Trick Room Attacker in Ursaluna. Iron Hands can help enable Trick Room with Fake Out support and is a valuable member in any Trick Room team.

Tornadus and Urshifu

Tornadus and Urshifu
Pokemon Tornadus (Incarnate Forme) ImageTornadus (Incarnate Forme) Urshifu Rapid-Strike Style ImageUrshifu Rapid-Strike Style
Ability Prankster Unseen Fist
Held Item Covert Cloak Mystic Water
Role Support / Special Attacker Physical Attacker

Rapid-Strike Urshifu is a perfect partner for Tornadus, as its middling speed makes for a great recipient for Tailwind boosts. Tornadus can also set up Rain Dance and boost the effectiveness of Surging Strikes.

Basculegion with Rain

Basculegion with Rain
Pokemon Basculegion (Male) ImageBasculegion (Male) Pelipper ImagePelipper
Ability Swift Swim Drizzle
Held Item Life Orb Focus Sash
Role Physical Attacker Support / Special Attacker

Though this duo has many shared weaknesses, its main strength is hyper-offence, which aims to take out as many of the opponent's Pokemon as possible, before they can take out yours.

Pelipper boosts the offensive power of Basculegion (Male)'s Water-type Attacks as well as doubling its Speed with Swift Swim.

Sneasler and Rillaboom

Sneasler and Rillaboom
Pokemon Sneasler ImageSneasler Rillaboom ImageRillaboom
Ability Unburden Grassy Surge
Held Item Grassy Seed Assault Vest
Role Physical Attacker Support / Physical Attacker

Rillaboom is a solid partner for Sneasler as it can use Fake Out to flinch faster threats, as well as naturally trigger Sneasler's Grassy Seed with its Grassy Surge.

Because of its mediocre defenses, Sneasler benefits greatly from Grassy Seed's Defense boost. It also powers up Sneasler's Acrobatics and doubles its Speed through Unburden.

Grimmsnarl and Hisuian Goodra

Grimmsnarl and Hisuian Goodra
Pokemon Grimmsnarl ImageGrimmsnarl Hisuian Goodra ImageHisuian Goodra
Ability Prankster Shell Armor
Held Item Light Clay Leftovers
Role Support Tank / Physical Attacker

Grimmsnarl is a great partner for Hisuian Goodra as it can help it stay in the game longer thanks to its Screens support. Behind Screens, Hisuian Goodra can comfortably set up Acid Armor, and dish out boosted Body Presses.

Chien-Pao and Dragonite

Chien-Pao and Dragonite
Pokemon Chien-Pao ImageChien-Pao Dragonite ImageDragonite
Ability Sword of Ruin Inner Focus
Held Item Focus Sash Choice Band
Role Physical Attacker Physical Attacker

Chien-Pao and Dragonite are still a powerful duo in Regulation F. They can be splashed into any team, and improve the team's physical offense simply by being there.

Chien-Pao and its Sword of Ruin Ability makes Priority Move users like Dragonite with Choice Band even more powerful.

Chien-Pao is also able to clear out Psychic and Grassy Terrain with Ice Spinner, enabling Dragonite's Extreme Speed to deal sizeable chunks of damage to opposing Pokemon.

Predictions and Meta-Analysis

Weather Wars

With a lot of new and powerful Protosynthesis users coming in to Regulation F, expect to see a lot of teams with weather control to either get or prevent any Protosynthesis boosts from occuring.

How to Build a Weather Team

Terrain Wars

With Grassy Glide returning to the game and with Rillaboom present, Terrain control will possibly be back in battles.

Even though Grassy Glide's power was reduced, Rillaboom can still be a threat to several Pokemon, which may lead to opposing sides vying to maintain or change Grassy Terrain.
