Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV)

EXP Growth Rates Explained

EXP Growth is an important aspect of the game that helps your Pokemon level up faster. Read on to find out all about EXP Growth Rates in Gen 9 and how they affect your Pokemon's growth in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV)!

What is EXP?

A Value That Indicates A Pokemon's Growth

Experience Points or EXP are points given to a Pokemon that decide when a Pokemon levels up. When knocking out enemy Pokemon, all Pokemon in your party will split the EXP, provided they are not fainted. You can also level up using EXP Candies.

Pokemon have different growth rates, summarized into types: Fast, Medium Fast, Medium Slow, Slow, Fluctuating and Erratic.

EXP Values At Different Levels

Because Pokemon grow and level up at different rates, they also require different amounts of EXP Points. Below is a chart showing a Pokemon's total EXP at certain levels.

Gaining EXP

Gaining EXP in Battle

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - Girafarig Evolving
The amount of EXP a Pokemon earns when it defeats an opponent depends on its level and its species.

Knocking out stronger, higher leveled Pokemon will grant your party more EXP, while knocking out lower level Pokemon will reward you with less. There are other conditions that determine how much EXP a Pokemon gains such as its participation in battle, how many Pokemon in the party are not fainted, holding a Lucky Egg or the presence of an EXP Charm.

In-game Pokemon also have a predetermined EXP Yield value, which varies based on species and level. Pokemon such as Chansey and Blissey are great for quickly leveling up your Pokemon as they yield a large amount of EXP when knocked out. Be sure to look out for these Pokemon in the wild!

Tera Raid Battles

Pokemon SV - Tera Raid Seamless Battle
In Pokemon Sword and Shield, Max Raid Battles did not yield EXP points for participating Pokemon. However winning these raids rewarded players with EXP Candy which can be used to level up Pokemon.

It is currently unknown if Tera Raids will work similarly or if EXP Candy will make a return in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
