Ability and Held Item

Ability Held Item
Dauntless Shield Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Rusted Shield ImageRusted Shield

Zamazenta can only have Dauntless Shield and a Rusted Shield while it's in its Crowned Shield form. Dauntless Shield increases its Defense by one stage when it enters battle for the first time, while Rusted Shield is what transforms it into its Crowned form.

Moves Breakdown

Body Press Heavy Slam
Substitute Iron Defense

Body Press is its best Fighting-type STAB move and main attacking move since it uses its Defense instead of Attack in its damage calculations.

Heavy Slam is its best Steel-type STAB move that uses Zamazenta's weight instead of its Attack in its damage calculations.

Substitute is used to punish more passive Pokemon by adding an extra layer of safety and providing protection against moves that inflict status like Will-O-Wisp.

Iron Defense boosts Zamazenta's Defense by two stages, increasing the damage of Body Press and making it a great counter against physical attackers.

Pokemon Dragon Type Icon

Fairy is the best Tera Type for this build because it is one of the best defensive types in the game with Zamazenta normally resisting or being immune to its two weaknesses.

EV Spread and Nature

A full 252 EVs are placed in Zamazenta's HP and Defense to make it as physically bulky as possible while also maximizing the damage of Body Press. The extra 4 EVs are put into its Speed to help it outspeed the opponent's Pokemon.

An Impish nature is preferred to maximize its physical bulk and Body Press damage.

Other Viable Moves

Rest Gives a way for Zamazenta to recover its health, allowing it to stay in battle longer.
Crunch Allows Zamazenta to threaten Ghost-types that are immune to Body Press.
Behemoth Bash An alternate Steel-type move that does more damage to Pokemon that are heavier or within the same weight range as Zamazenta.

How to Use Zamazenta Effectively

Know When to Switch Out Zamazenta

It is tempting to keep Zamazenta in the battle to maximize the value of Dauntless Shield's Defense boost, but in some situations, it might be better to switch it out to preserve it for a stronger endgame.

Remember to look at the opponent's team and consider which Pokemon on your team is the best counter to theirs. If their team cannot easily deal with a physical wall like Zamazenta, then it would be best to switch it out and save it to cleanly close out the battle.

How to Build a Team with Zamazenta

Zamazenta is best used on more defensive teams that aim to slowly deal chip damage to the opponent and outlast them to win the battle.

Sample Singles Team

Hazards Lead Physical Wall Physical Attacker
Glimmora ImageGlimmora Zamazenta (Crowned Shield) ImageZamazenta (Crowned Shield) Dragonite ImageDragonite

Glimmora is a great lead for more defensive-oriented teams thanks to Stealth Rocks providing chip damage whenever the opponent switches in a Pokemon and Toxic Debris setting up Toxic Spikes to poison grounded Pokemon whenever they enter the battle.

Zamazenta can then come in and wall any physical attackers and deal a good amount of damage with Dauntless Shield and Iron Defense boosted Body Presses.

Dragonite is used to close out the game with the combination of Multiscale and Roost allowing it to become nearly impossible to knock out and forcing the opponent to slowly take poison damage until it is within the range to get knocked out by an Extreme Speed.
