Choice Scarf lets Great Tusk's meager Speed stat of 152 reach an impressive 228, letting it outspeed even the likes of Electrode. Its impressive move coverage and its new Speed afforded by Choice Scarf makes Great Tusk an offensive force to be reckoned with.
Thunder Fang | Thunder Fang is great for damaging bulky Water-types and Flying-types who would want to switch in to Great Tusk. |

・ Close Combat ・ Knock Off ・ Rock Tomb |
Great Tusk's great physical bulk coupled with Assault Vest allows it to be an excellent all around Tank. With access to Knock Off, Great Tusk can also be disruptive. Rock Tomb is a great means of Speed Control, slowing down fast Pokemon and improve matchups for itself and its teammates.
Bulldoze | Is a Ground-type move and Speed Control rolled into one move. Worth considering if you're willing to give up Earthquake's damage output. |
---|---|
Megahorn | A great option for knocking out Psychic Pokemon who threaten Great Tusk. |

Ability | Held Item | |
---|---|---|
Protosynthesis | Booster Energy |
Protosynthesis is Great Tusk's is its only Ability, and with the given EV spread, will receive a 50% Speed boost when holding a Booster Energy.
Earthquake | Ice Spinner |
Bulk Up | Taunt |
Earthquake is Great Tusk's main STAB move and still hits hard even without invetment. Ice Spinner is a great utility move that hits Grass and opposing Ground-types, and also removes terrain from the field.
Bulk Up allows Great Tusk to raise its Attack and Defense so that it can hit harder and withstand physical attacks better, while Taunt allows it to shut down opposing walls.
With the given EV spread, it can shut down most walls and slower setup sweepers, preventing them from using their support and boosting moves.

Terastallizing into a pure Ground-type not only boosts the power of Great Tusk's Earthquake, it also removes its Fighting typing which allows it to stay on the field against Flying, Psychic, and Fairy-type Pokemon.
Best Ground Type Pokemon for Ranked Battle
Full Speed EVs allows it to get the 50% boost from Protosynthesis while full Sp.Def EVs lets it withstand special attacks better, with the remaining 4 HPs rounding off its bulk.
Knock Off | Can replace Ice Spinner and allows it to threaten Pokemon that rely on held items. |
---|---|
Bulldoze | A weaker alternative to Earthquake that lowers the target's Speed by one stage. |
The following calculations take into account Great Tusk's given EV spread with a Jolly Nature, and +1 Attack and +1 Defense from Bulk Up.

Incredibly high Attack and Defense stats. Will usually get an Attack boost in Sun. Has access to the massively powerful Headlong Rush. |
As with all Past Paradox Pokemon, Great Tusk has Protosynthesis. But even without ways to trigger it, it is still an effective Pokemon on its own. Assault Vest gives Great Tusk a much needed boost to its Special Defense.
Headlong Rush is Great Tusk's most powerful and reliable STAB Move, whose destructive power can break even the most defensive walls. Earthquake is an option if in case Great Tusk needs to deal spread damage.
Close Combat is its secondary STAB option, which can OHKO Pokemon like Kingambit and Tyranitar with ease. Protect is used for scouting Moves or stalling out turns of Tailwind or Trick Room.
Tera Ground is chosen for this build, as it allows Great Tusk to be rid of its weaknesses from its Fighting typing, and also increase the power of its Ground-type Moves.
A full 252 EVs are put into Speed so that Great Tusk can outspeed Base 86 Speed Pokemon and slower, most notably Pokemon like Glimmora, Gholdengo, and Rotom Forms. A full 252 EVs are also put into Attack, so that Great Tusk will deal as much damage as possible, despite its Jolly Nature.
The remaining 4 EVs are spent on Special Defense.
Ice Spinner | Great for damaging Ice-weak Pokemon such as other Great Tusk, and Amoonguss. If Great Tusk is carrying an Assault Vest, this is a good option over Protect. |

Damage Dealt by Great Tusk |
|
---|---|
Item: Assault Vest | Headlong Rush 194 ~ 230 (78.5 ~ 93.1%) Guaranteed 2-Hit KO |
Item: Leftovers | Headlong Rush 158 ~ 188 (76.3 ~ 90.8%) Guaranteed 2-Hit KO After Leftovers Recovery |
Item: Booster Energy | Headlong Rush 165 ~ 195 (126.9 ~ 150%) Guaranteed OHKO |
Great Tusk can deal huge chunks of damage unresisted if not outright knocking out most Pokemon. Take advantage of Great Tusk's monstrous Attack stat and use its STAB moves to take decisive knock outs!
Great Tusk has paltry Special Bulk, so it would always want to steer clear of Special Attackers, especially ones that can outright take it out. Putting Great Tusk in a position where threats to it are neutralized will often lead to success when using this Pokemon.
Paradox Pokemon Builds for Competitive Battles and Tera Raids
Teammates with Special Defense are great for Great Tusk to fight alongside with. Faster Pokemon who can fight matchups that Great Tusk cannot make for great teammates.

---|---|
Talonflame | Great Tusk |
Special Attacker | Special Attacker |
Torkoal | Flutter Mane |
Talonflame can set up Tailwind for Great Tusk and allow it to outspeed unboosted Flutter Mane and Iron Bundle. It can also use Will-O-Wisp to protect Great Tusk from other Physical Attackers.
Torkoal can also set up Sun with Drought and switch in to Water-type Moves.
With both Sun and Tailwind, Flutter Mane can come in late into the game and pick off low HP Pokemon.
When playing Great Tusk, it is important to protect it from Intimidate and Will-O-Wisp users.
