Ability and Held Item

Ability Held Item
Swift Swim Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Focus Sash ImageFocus Sash

Ludicolo is a strong and reliable Swift Swim Attacker, having it's speed doubled while it's raining.

Focus Sash is chosen for this build so that Ludicolo can survive one attack, and be able to threaten a knock out in return.

Moves Breakdown

Energy Ball Hydro Pump
Ice Beam Knock Off

Energy Ball is Ludicolo's most consistent Grass-type STAB attack.

Hydro Pump is a strong, secondary STAB option, which is good for burst damage especially in Rain.

Ice Beam is useful for damaging Grass-weak Pokemon such as Teal Mask Ogerpon, Rillaboom, Landorus-T, Dragonite or Tera Grass Heatran.

Knock Off removes an opponents item, which can reduce their damage output or their healing potential

Water is the best Tera Type for this build because Ludicolo can shed its weaknesses from its Grass typing, while boosting the power of its Water-type Moves.

EV Spread and Nature

Full 252 EVs are put into Ludicolo's Speed and Special Attack, while the remaining 4 EVs are put into Special Defense. This allows Ludicolo to better take the occasional Thunderbolt.

A Modest Nature is preferred over a Timid Nature to ensure that Ludicolo is an offensive threat.

Other Viable Moves

Weather Ball A more accurate Water-type STAB move while it is raining. If there is no weather condition, then the damage will decrease by half and it will become a normal type move.
Leaf Storm A strong Grass-type STAB Move that will reduce the user's Special Attack by two stages after use.
Fake Out A priority move that can remove opposing Focus Sashes and help get knock outs on low health Pokemon.

Moves Breakdown

How to Use Ludicolo Effectively

Use Ludicolo's Strong Offensive Tools

Ludicolo can be outfitted to run a number of strong coverage moves that range from Water, Grass, and Ice. It can also run Fake Out, a VGC staple, which flinches an opponent, allowing Ludicolo's partner to safely use a move.

How to Build a Team with Alolan Ninetales

Having a rain setter like Politoed or Tornadus is required for teams with Ludicolo, otherwise it will not be able to make use of the speed boost from Swift Swim.

Sample Singles Build

Rain Lead Special Attacker Physical Attacker
Politoed ImagePolitoed Ludicolo ImageLudicolo Landorus (Therian Forme) ImageLandorus (Therian Forme)

Having a rain setter like Politoed is essential for Ludicolo's Swift Swim. Without it, Ludicolo's Speed is essentially half of what it could be. Landorus Therian is also great to have since it checks all of the weakness of both Politoed and Ludicolo.

Sample Doubles Team

Support / Special Attacker Special Attacker
Tornadus (Incarnate Forme) ImageTornadus (Incarnate Forme) Ludicolo ImageLudicolo
Special Attacker Support / Special Attacker
Gholdengo ImageGholdengo Politoed ImagePolitoed

Tornadus can provide Icy Wind support for Ludicolo outside of Rain or manually set up Rain when necessary. Ludicolo can also help Tornadus set up Tailwind safely with Fake Out support, ensuring that your team will always have speed superiority. This strategy is strong against Rain mirror matches and can allow Ludicolo to outspeed opposing Ludicolo.

This is also a great strategy to prevent opposing Trick Room. You can use Ludicolo's Fake Out to flinch Cresselia, and then use Tornadus to Taunt it. Cresselia's common Trick Room partner Ursaluna will likely use Protect, allowing you to successfully stop the opponent's Trick Room strategy.

To improve the matchup against Armarouge/Indeedee, Ludicolo can be run with Tera Dark to give it an immunity to Expanding Force.

Gholdengo in Rain can offer offensive pressure, while Politoed can set up Rain with Drizzle and work as a late-game win condition with Perish Song.

Counters for Ludicolo

Hit Ludicolo with Super-Effective Physical Moves

Ludicolo can easily get KOd by Attacks like Dragonite's Flying Tera Blast or Scizor's Bug Bite because of its mediocre HP and physical defense.
