SV - Raid Team

5-Star and 6-Star Raids are part of the end-game content of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, allowing players to find and challenge stronger versions of wild Pokemon. Read on to learn the best strategies, moves, and more for beating 5 and 6-Star Tera Raids!

Best Strategies for 5 and 6-Star Raids

Solo Strategies

SV - Solo Raid
When playing alone, you need to focus on offense, since the AI players that will help you in the raid will focus on supporting you. The AI generally have Pokemon that use status moves to inflict status effects, or lower the Raid Pokemon's stats.

Stat Boost + HP Restoring Moves

Belly Drum
Drain Punch

One of the simplest strategies when going up against Raid Pokemon is to simply start the match by using Stat-Boosting moves, then dealing damage afterwards, usually with HP Restoring moves, which should heal you back up to full health.

From there, it is just a matter of damaging the Raid Pokemon over and over again, and Terastallizing once you have enough charge to destroy the Energy Shield, and win the Raid.

Alternatively, by giving your Pokemon a Shell Bell held item, all of its damaging moves become HP restoring moves, healing it for a portion of the damage dealt.

Continous Stat Buff / Debuff

Some Pokemon moves provide you with a stat boost to yourself, or a stat debuff to your opponent. This eliminates the need for a setup with stat-boosting move, allowing you to damage the Raid Pokemon from the start, and continue to increase your damage until you reach the maximum stat boost or debuff.

Skeledirge's Torch Song, for example, increases its Special Attack by one stage every time it is used, allowing Skeledirge to continously deal more damage the more it uses Torch Song. Espathra's Lumina Crash, on the other hand, lowers the target's Special Defense by two stages every time it hits, allowing Espathra to output large amounts of damage within a short period of time.

Multiplayer Strategies

When playing with a group of people, it is easier to coordinate a strategy that would make the raid much easier.

Perrserker's Ability Steely Spirit increases the damage of Steel-type moves by 50%. With 4 of them, it brings the total to a 200% increase to the damage of Steel Type moves.

Perrserker also has access to the move Screech, which lowers the target's Defense by two stages, which allows your team to bring the Raid Pokemon's Defense to -6 in just one turn. From there, the Perrserkers just use STAB Steel-type moves, and re-apply the Screech debuff again if necessary.

A strategy that became popular during the Cinderace Tera Raid event, this strategy makes use of three Qwilfish with the ability Intimidate and access to the move Acupressure, while the Slowbro runs Calm Mind and Stored Power.

Acupressure increases a random stat by two stages, and if all three Qwilfish use Acupressure on Slowbro, it can reach +6 to all Stats within 4 Turns, bringing Stored Power's base power to 860. This allowed Slowbro to One-Hit KO the 7-Star Cinderace, meaning it could also OHKO 5 or 6-Star Raids even with neutral damage.

Choose the Best Moves for Tera Raids

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV Azumarill with Belly Drum, size 440x248

In Tera Raids, some moves become more valuable due to the nature of the combat, while some strong moves for competitive battling become slightly less valuable in raids because of their drawbacks.

Knowing which moves to take in Tera Raids can help you clear raids faster and easier.

HP Restoring Moves

Pokemon SV - Ceruledge Using Bitter Blade

In Tera Raids, getting knocked out does not mean you lose the challenge, instead, you lose a portion of your remaining time, depending on how many times you have fainted during the battle. Due to this, HP Restoring moves allow you to stay alive longer, eliminating the risk of having to start over due to running out of time.

Moves like Wish, and Recover heal you for a good percentage of your HP, while moves like Drain Punch and Bitter Blade heal you for a percent of your damage dealt.

List of HP Restoring Moves

Stat-Boosting Moves

SV - Belly Drum

Since Tera Raid Pokemon have their HP increased, increasing your other stats can greatly help in making Raids easier. 6-Star and 7-Star Raids also feature Pokemon with increased Defense and Special Defense on top of their increased HP, so boosting your own Offense and Defense are needed to win.

Moves like Belly Drum and Nasty Plot increase offensive capabilities faster, while moves like Bulk Up and Calm Mind boost both offense and defense, but at a slower rate.

Keep an Eye on the Raid Timer and HP Bar

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - How to Solo 6-Star Raid.png

In Tera Raids, the Raid Timer and HP Bar not only show the time and HP remaining, but are also good indicators of when Raid Pokemon will perform their extra actions.

Energy Shield

SV - Energy Shield
Upon reaching around 50% HP, the Raid Pokemon will receive an Energy Shield, effectively reducing all damage taken from non-Terastallized Pokemon.

Deal Massive Damage Right Before the Shield Activates

Since the Energy Shield will appear at around 50% HP, you can damage the Raid Pokemon to about 60% of its HP, then use stat-boosting moves to deal even more damage while the shield is not active yet.

You can also Knock Out the Raid Pokemon this way if you have enough damage, skipping the entire Shield phase entirely.

Use Cheers!

Often overlooked by players, Cheers provide buffs to the entire team, and can often give players a huge advantage when timed correctly.

Cheers are not exclusively meant for Online play, and you can also use Cheers even when you are playing solo, to increase your chances of winning,

Use "Go All Out" to Increase Offensive Power

SV - Go All Out
"Go All Out" is a useful cheer when looking to boost your team's offensive power. Using this cheer multiplies all teammates Attack and Sp. Attack by either 150% or 200%.

The Go all out buff is calculated separately, and still increases your Attack and Sp. Atk, even if you already have +6 on either stats from stat-boosting moves. Make sure to use it before using an attack to deal even more damage against the Raid Pokemon!

"Heal Up" Removes Status Conditions and Heals Teammates

SV - Heal Up
"Heal Up" removes status conditions from your team, such as Paralysis, Sleep, and even Confusion. It also heals Pokemon for a percentage of its max HP, allowing you to save your teammates when they are low on HP.

Train a Variety of Pokemon

Tyranitar Ghost Tera Type Pokemon Violet and Scarlet

Tera Raids are dynamic, and there is no single Pokemon that can solo every type of Raid. Tera Types of Raid Pokemon are generated randomly, so type matchups become tricky, with some Raid Pokemon having zero weaknesses thanks to their Tera type and Ability.

Having different Pokemon ready for different types of Raids allows you to generally be prepared, and gives you a much higher chance of winning in Raids.

Best Pokemon for Tera Raids

Carefully Choose which Pokemon to Bring in Raids

As mentioned earlier, type matchups become tricky in raids, mainly due to the Raid Pokemon often having a completely different Tera Type than its original type.

For example, it would make sense to bring an Electric-type against a Raid Gyarados, but if it has a Ground Tera type, it would be completely immune to Electric attacks that it normally would have been 4x weak to.

Inversely, bringing a Fire-type Pokemon against a Grass Tera Gyarados to hit it for Super Effective damage, but that would also put you at risk of being hit by Super Effective Water-type attacks from Gyarados.

Maximize Your Pokemon's Potential

As simple as it may sound, training your Pokemon is the first step towards having a set of Pokemon strong enough to take on various Tera Raids.

Raid Pokemon appear at higher levels than regular Pokemon, so having Pokemon that are at the maximum possible level is your best bet against Raid Pokemon.

Level up to Lvl 100

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV Drifblim Tera Raid Drops.png

5-Star Raids feature Lvl 75 Pokemon, while 6-Star Raids feature Lvl 90 Pokemon. In order to stand a chance against these stronger Pokemon, having your Pokemon levelled up to 100 is a necessity.

Luckily, in this game, levelling up is not as tedious as it was in previous games, with access to a variety of mechanics such as candies and food buffs, you can now reach Level 100 faster!

How to Level Up Fast

EV Train your Pokemon

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - Max EV Trained

Similar to competitive battling, having the best stats for your Pokemon is an absolute must, and in order to maximize the stats of your Pokemon, you must spend time EV training them.

Generally, for Tera Raids, an investment in HP and their main attack stat are the keys to defeating a particularly strong Raid Pokemon.

Hyper Train your Pokemon

Lastly, Hyper Training your Pokemon allows you to give them maximum IVs. Doing so allows your Pokemon to reach the height of their potential, having the absolute best stats for that specific Pokemon.
