Chien-Pao's Sword of Ruin Defense drop, combined with its base 120 Attack and 135 Speed, make it a very difficult Pokemon to switch into, which also makes it a great lead as opposing Pokemon are immediately at a disadvantage due to the defense drop from the Ruinous Pokemon's Ability.
Amazing physical threat because of its ability and stats Strong offensive coverage without Tera Blast.
|
Ability | Held Item | |
---|---|---|
Sword of Ruin | Focus Sash |
Sword of Ruin is Chien-Pao's only Ability and reduces the Defense of all Pokemon on the field by 25%. This allows Chien-Pao to inflict heavy damage even against dedicated Physical Walls.
Focus Sash ensures Chien-Pao will live one hit and be able to get one more devestating attack off. Just be wary of multi-hit moves like Surging Strikes and Scale Shot.
Icicle Crash | Sucker Punch |
Sacred Sword | Tera Blast |
Icicle Crash is its strongest Ice-type STAB move. It also does not count as a contact move, so you do not have to worry about the recoil damage from Rocky Helmet or Rough Skin.
Sucker Punch is an amazing Dark-type STAB move that hits the opponent before it can attack. However, if the opponent doesn't use an attacking move, Sucker Punch will fail.
Sacred Sword is its primary coverage move, allowing Chien-Pao to hit problematic Pokemon like Chi-Yu and Heatran.
Tera Blast turns into an Electric-type attack when Chien-Pao Terastallizes. This allows it to threaten Urshifu Rapid Strike and other Water-types that would otherwise annoy it.

Electric is the best Tera Type for Chien-Pao since it gives its Tera Blast great offensive coverage, while also making it's only weakness Ground, which it normally counters.
Alternatively, it could use a Stellar Tera Type to boost the damage of whatever move it chooses to use, as well as making Tera Blast an amazing Stellar-type attack.
Although there are times where Chien-Pao would want a more consistent offensive option like a Dark or Ice Tera, or even a more defensive option in a Ghost Tera.
Best Electric (Tera) Type Pokemon for Ranked Battles
A full 252 EV investment in Attack and Speed allows Chien-Pao to hit as hard as possible with its physical attacks, while the remaining 4 EVs are placed in HP to round off its bulk.
Crunch | This a more consistent Dark-type attack since it doesn't rely on the opponent needing to attack for it to hit. |
---|---|
Ice Shard | A +1 priority Ice-type attack that guarantees to finish off low health opponents. |
The following calculations take into account Chien-Pao's given EV spread with a Jolly Nature.

Item: Assault Vest | Sacred Sword 184-218 (92.9 - 110.1%) 62.5% Chance to OHKO |
Item: Punching Glove | Tera Electric Tera Blast 254-302 (145.1 - 172.5%) Guaranteed OHKO |

Chien-Pao's high Speed and Attack, combined with the Defense drop from Sword of Ruin, make it a terrifying Choice Band user.
Icicle Crash and Crunch are its main STAB moves, while Sacred Sword and Tera Electric/Fairy Tera Blast are amazing coverage options.
Sucker Punch | This a stronger priority move but fails when the opposing Pokemon isn't attacking. |

Psychic Fangs | Another good coverage move that can target problematic Poison and Fighting-types |

Icicle Crash
・ Sucker Punch ・ Sacred Sword ・ Protect |
Chien-Pao's Sword of Ruin make it a very difficult Pokemon to switch into, which also makes it a great lead as opposing Pokemon are immediately at a disadvantage due to the defense drop from the Ruinous Pokemon's Ability.
Icicle Crash is its strongest STAB move and also provides a chance of flinching. This is especially useful against Pokemon such as Rillaboom, Amoonguss, and Tornadus-I, who take super-effective damage from it.
Sucker Punch is an important Priority Move for picking off low HP Pokemon, or for dealing meaningful chunks of damage to Flutter Mane.
Protect is useful for Chien-Pao as it will often be a target for Fake Out users.
Sacred Sword is useful against opposing Chien-Pao, and other Fighting-weak Pokemon such as Incineroar.
Throat Chop | An alternative Dark-type move that prevents the opposing Pokemon from using sound-based moves such as Sylveon's Hyper Voice. |
---|---|
Ice Spinner | An alternative Ice-type move that clears Terrain. This is especially useful for clearing Psychic Terrain, and enabling partners with Extreme Speed.. |
Chien-Pao's high Attack and Speed, on top of its great dual STAB, make it a formidable Pokemon in competitive play.
It's also one of the few offensive Pokemon that can always force switches, as its Sword of Ruin Ability allows it to hit with increased damage on switch even without setting up with Swords Dance.
Chien-Pao can function as a great lead or revenge killer in hyper offense teams as the debuff its Sword of Ruin inflicts allows it to take on defensive Pokemon that can otherwise wall it and its teammates.
Lead Attacker | Choice Band Attacker | Offensive Pivot |
---|---|---|
Chien-Pao | Azumarill | Glimmora |
Chien-Pao is the lead attacker for this team, with its main role being to setup with Swords Dance and deal as much damage to the opposing team.
Azumarill greatly appreciates Chien-Pao's Ice STAB as it struggles with Grass-types. Conversely, Chien-Pao pivot to Azumarill so that it can handle Fire and Fighting-types.
Glimmora serves as this team's offensive pivot, providing invaluable hazard support with Stealth Rock and Toxic Spikes from its Toxic Debris Ability.
Support | Special Attacker |
---|---|
Comfey | Terapagos (Terastal Form) |
Physical Attacker | Physical Attacker |
Dragonite | Chien-Pao |
Comfey makes for a great partner for Terapagos in Regulation G, being able to keep it healthy with Floral Healing. It is also able to lend its support through Speed Control options like Tailwind and Trick Room, and increase Terapagos's damage output with Helping Hand.
Dragonite and Chien-Pao make up for a solid back-end who can close out games.
Despite Chien-Pao's overwhelming offensive presence, it's mediocre defensive stats and weakness to very common attacking types make it vulnerable to getting revenge killed by opposing attackers.
Pokemon | Description |

Flutter Mane | Ranking: ★★★★★
・Choice Scarf variants will easily outspeed Chien-Pao and KO with Moonblast. ▶️Flutter Mane Best Movesets |
Lucario | Ranking: ★★★★
・Resists both of Chien-Pao's dual STAB moves. ・Can threaten with STAB Bullet Punch or KO outright with Close Combat. |
Breloom | Ranking: ★★★★
・Can terastallize into pure Fighting to remove its Ice weakness. ・Easily KOs Chien-Pao with STAB Technician-boosted Mach Punch. ▶️Breloom Best Movesets |
In the recently concluded Paldea Prologue Online Competition, all 400 Paldea Pokedex Pokemon are legal, including Koraidon and Miraidon. This was the best team for using Chien-Pao in this competition.
Best Teams for Paldea Prologue
Pincurchin can trigger Iron Bundle's Quark Drive and make it the quickest Pokemon on the field. Once it is indeed the quickest, it becomes an even better user of Specs-boosted Icy Wind, lowering the opposing side's Speed Stat. Iron Bundle can also threaten with powerful Freeze-Drys and Hydro Pumps even without a Speed boost.
Chien-Pao pairs nicely with Dragonite, as it can reduce Defense stats with Sword of Ruin, while Dragonite uses Tera Normal Extreme Speed. Chien-Pao also has access to Ice Spinner which can remove Psychic Terrain which halts Priority Moves like Dragonite's Extreme Speed.
Amoonguss and Arcanine round out the team as an effective support duo.
This team makes use of the Focus Sash Lead Doubles Build.
