Throw the Pokeball from Behind

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV) - Caught off Guard

To catch a Pokemon off-guard, you need to time your throw when the Pokemon is facing away from you. If you hit them while they are facing you or from the side, you will not get the chance to catch them off-guard.

A message prompt telling you you have caught them off-guard will tell you when you have done this move successfully.

Press B Button to Sneak Up on Them

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV) - Crouch

Another thing you can do before approaching a wild Pokemon is to crouch down. Press the B Button to crouch and not alert the Pokemon of your presence.

You can use the ZL Button to lock on the Pokemon before you catch them.

Similarly to in Pokemon Legends Arceus, catching a Pokemon off-guard in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet grants you a free round of play. The wild Pokemon will be too shocked to use any of its moves, leaving you open to have an additional turn.

This is great if you are trying to train your Pokemon and gain EXP points or when you want to try catching stronger and higher leveled Pokemon.

You can also catch a Pokemon Off-Guard if you approach them when they are asleep. You know they are asleep if there is blue emiting from their bodies.
