Pokemon SV - Stellar Tera Crown

The Stellar Tera Type is the new 19th Type introduced in the Indigo Disk DLC for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV) which adds several effects to affected Pokemon. Read on to learn more about the newest Tera Type, how it works, and how to unlock it.

How Does the Stellar Tera Type Work?

Stellar Tera Type Summary
・Gives one-time 50% damage boost to moves of the same type as the base type.
・Gives one-time 20% damage boost to moves of the different type as the base type.
・Damage boost is not limited in Tera Raids.
Boosts Tera Blast's power and deals super-effective damage on Terastallized Pokemon, but lowers Attack and Special Attack per use.
Retains base type's weaknesses, resistances and immunities.

Stellar Tera Type Offensive Match-Ups

Boosts the Damage of All of Your Attacks

Pokemon SV - Stellar Damage Boost

Non-STAB Attack +20% Damage Boost
STAB Attack +50% Damage Boost

The first time you use a move of a specific type in battle, the damage will be boosted similar to how a regular Tera gives your Pokemon a STAB boost.

If you're using a non-STAB move the damage will be increased by 20%. However, if you use a STAB move it will boost the damage by 50%, similar to how the other Tera Types work.

In the image above, it shows that all of Meloetta's moves are boosted similar to how a Normal Tera boosts all of the Pokemon's Normal-type moves.

Doesn't Boost the Damage a Second Time

Pokemon SV - Stellar No Damage Boost
The damage boost you get from using a Stellar Tera only applies to the first time you use a move of that type in battle. If you use the same move or a different move of the same type, the damage will no longer get boosted.

When compared to the prior image, it can be seen the Meloetta's Normal-type moves are no longer boosted after it used Hyper Voice the turn before.

When used in a Tera Raid, however, the move's damage will always be boosted regardless of how many times it is used.

Guaranteed Super-Effective Hits with Tera Blast on Terastallized Pokemon

Pokemon SV - Stellar Tera Blast
When you use Tera Blast with a Stellar Tera Type, it will guarantee it to be a super-effective hit regardless of the opponent's Tera Type. In addition, the move's base power increases from 80 to 100.

The downside of this is that performing Tera Blast with a Stellar Tera Type reduces your Pokemon's Attack and Special Attack stats by one stage.

Do note that the super-effective hit and stat drops will always occur as long as the opponent is Terastallized.

Guaranteed Neutral Hits on Non-Terastallized Pokemon

When you use Tera Blast with a Stellar Tera Type, you can guarantee neutral hits against non-Terastallized Pokemon, regardless of their typing.

This means that if you have a Pokemon with a Stellar Type and you Terastallize them, you'll be able to deal neutral damage against Pokemon that may normally resist any of your main moves.

Stellar Tera Type Defensive Match-Ups

Doesn't Change Your Pokemon's Defensive Typing

Pokemon SV - Stellar Defensive

If your Pokemon Terastallizes into a Stellar Type, it will retain its regular typing before it Terastallizes. This means that your Pokemon cannot defensively Terastallize into Stellar to avoid a super-effective hit.

In the image above, it can be seen that the wild Dodrio has a Stellar Tera, but Chien-Pao's Icicle Crash is still a super-effective hit even if Dodrio is Terastallized.

How to Unlock the Stellar Tera Type

Progress Through the Indigo Disk Story

Pokemon SV - Glimmora with Stellar Tera
Towards the end of the Indigo Disk's stroyline, you will be brought back to Area Zero to explore the deepest depths of the crater. Once you insert the Indigo Disk and take the elevator further down into the cavern, you will start encountering Wild Tera Pokemon with the Stellar Tera Type.

From there, battling these Pokemon and picking up objects from the ground will give you Stellar Tera Shards, which you can use at the Treasure Eatery to give your Pokemon the Stellar Tera Type.

Farm Stellar Tera Shards in the Post-Game

Wild Stellar Tera Pokemon Also Appear in the Terarium After Beating the DLC

Pokemon SV - Stellar Unlocked in Terarium
After beating Terapagos and returning to Blueberry Academy, you will be notified over the intercom that Briar wishes to speak to you. She's managed to harness the Stellar Tera's energy down in Area Zero and added it to the Terarium Core.

This upgrade makes it so that Wild Tera Stellar Pokemon will now appear inside the Terarium, allowing you to farm for more Stellar Shards outside of the cave in Area Zero.

Get 50x Stellar Tera Shards on Top of the Terarium Core

Pokemon SV - Stellar Terarium Core
Once you unlock the ability for Koraidon or Miraidon to fly from Amarys, you can fly up to the Terarium Core to get 50 Stellar Tera Shards along with a Golden Bottle Cap and an Ability Patch.

How to Change to Stellar Tera Type

Talk to Cook Map Location

Talk with the Chef of the Treasure Eatery at Medali Town. They will change your Tera Type to your desired one. Note that you need to defeat Medali Town's Gym Leader, Larry, to unlock this feature.

You Need 50 Tera Shards to Change Tera Types

Terapagos

Terapagos' signature move Tera Starstorm is an upgraded version of Tera Blast. This is a 120 base power move that hits both Pokemon with Tera Stellar's Tera Blast effect.

This makes it so that both of the opponent's Pokemon aren't safe to Terastallize because they are both at risk of taking a super-effective hit.

Serperior

Serperior has a very niche interaction with Tera Stellar Tera Blast because of its ability Contrary.

Whenever Serperior uses a Stellar Tera Blast against an opponent who has Terastallized, it will be a super-effective attack that also boosts its Attack and Sp. Atk by one stage.

Meowscarada

Meowscarada has the potential to hit the opponent with heavily boosted attacks with the combination of Protean and Tera Stellar boosting the damage of all of its moves.

Protean also allows it to defensively change its typing since having a Stellar Tera keeps the Pokemon's current typing before Terastallization.

Stellar Tera is Legal in Regulation F

Along with Indigo Disk Pokemon, the Stellar Tera Type is usable in Regulation F of Ranked Battles. This means that any legal Pokemon can have a Stellar Tera Type.

Once you farm up enough Stellar Tera Shards to give your Pokemon a Stellar Tera, you can change their Tera Type and head on into Ranked Battles straight away.
