How Do Tera Types Work?

The Pokemon's Tera Type Replaces Its Original Typing

Defensive Benefits

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Terastal Pikachu

Once Terastallized, the Pokemon will adopt its Tera Type which will allow it to replace its original typing. This can have defensive benefits such as a Pikachu turning its Ground-type weakness into an immunity after Terastallizing into a Flying Type.

Tera Types Can Not Be Lost or Changed with Abilities or Moves

Pokemon that have been Terastallized can not have their Type altered through Abilities such as Meowscarada's Protean or Cinderace's Libero, as well as by moves such as Soak or Roost. Pokemon will gain/lose the offensive STAB boosts from their regular typings however upon activation of the Libero or Protean Ability

Offensive Benefits

Terastallized Pokemon have an offensive benefit to do so as well. Using moves that match the user's Tera Type will give it a power boost in addition to the Same-Type Attack Bonus it would normally get!

Affects the Move Tera Blast

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Flareon using Tera Blast against Foretress
A new move introduced in Scarlet and Violet is called Tera Blast. It is a Normal-type Move that can be learned via TM. When a Terastallized Pokemon uses this move, it becomes the same type as the user's Tera Type.

Notably, Tera Blast inflicts damage using either the user's Attack stat or Special Attack stat - whichever is higher! This guarantees that the user deals the highest damage it could with that move.
New Moves Introduced

Boosts Same Type Moves With Less Than 60 Base Power

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Metal Claw

Terastallization boosts a move that has less than 60 Power to 60 Power if it's the same type as the Pokemon's Tera Type. For example, if a Pawmot uses Nuzzle while terastallized, then the move's BP will be increased to 60 then further boosted by STAB.

Keep in mind that the boost in power is hidden and will not appear when checking the move summary during battle. Also remember that moves with increased priority, multi-hit moves, or moves increased by abilities such as Technician will not receive this boost.

List of Moves That Are Boosted When Terastallized

Tera Types can Reduce the Overall Number of Weaknesses

4x Weakness Reduction Pokemon
Gyarados ImageGyarados Pokemon Water Type Icon Pokemon Flying Type Icon
Tera Type: Pokemon Ground Type Icon
Dragonite ImageDragonite Pokemon Dragon Type Icon Pokemon Flying Type Icon
Tera Type: Pokemon Flying Type Icon

Pokemon that have 4x weaknesses can become much more competitively viable by Terastallizing. For example, while Gyarados is normally 4x weak to Electric, however by Terastallizing into a Ground Type, not only does it become immune to Electric Types, but it can quickly take them out with STAB super effective Earthquakes or Tera Blasts.

Another example would be giving a Dragonite a Flying Tera Type. As a pure Flying Type, Dragonite loses its 4x weakness to Ice, as well as 2x weaknesses to Dragon and Fairy, leaving it only weak to Electric, Rock, and Ice.
Type Chart: All Matchups and Effectiveness

Terastallized Pokemon Can Not Become Typeless

Once a Pokemon has Terastallized, its Type can no longer be altered through the effects of moves or Abilities. This means moves such as Double Shock and Roost will not leave a Terastallized Pokemon of the respective Electric or Flying Tera Types typeless. Soak will also fail to change a Pokemon's type to Water. The Protean Ability also will not change the user's type.

After Defeating the Medali Gym Leader, you can talk to the chef of the restaurant to change the Tera Type of your Pokemon. You will also be given 50 Normal Tera Shards, allowing you to change the Tera Type of one of your Pokemon to the Normal type as soon as you want.

How to Change Tera Type

Requires 50 Tera Shards

What Determines a Pokemon's Tera Type

Dual Type and Mono Type Pokemon Tera Types Explained

A Pokemon's Type Determines its Tera Type
Rockruff ImageRockruff Magnemite ImageMagnemite
Type Types
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Rock Moves Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Steel Moves Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Electric Moves

Dual Type Pokemon Have a 50% Chance of Either Tera Type

Dual Type Pokemon can have either one of its regular Types as a Tera Type if they are hatched from an egg or caught in the wild. For example, Magnemite is a Steel and Electric Type, therefore a Magnemite bred or caught in the wild has a 50% chance of having either a Steel or Electric Tera Type.

Mono Type Pokemon Will Always Have the Same Tera Type

Meanwhile, Mono Type Pokemon like Rockruff can only have its only Type be its Tera Type, in this case, since Rockruff is a Rock Type, it can only have Rock as its Tera Type if it's caught in the wild or bred.

Tera Types Are Not Inherited Through Breeding

Parent Cannot Pass Down its Tera Type
Grimmsnarl ImageGrimmsnarl Impidimp ImageImpidimp
Tera Type Hatched Tera Type
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Ghost Moves Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Dark Moves or Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Fairy Moves

A Pokemon's Tera type is not necessarily inherited via breeding. For example, if you catch a Grimmsnarl with a Ghost Type Tera Type, breeding it won't give you an Impidimp with a Ghost type Tera Type. If you have a Dark Tera Type Grimmsnarl however, it will have a 50% chance of its offspring having the same Tera Type. If you would like to pass on the Ghost Tera Type, you will either need to use the Pokemon you got in the raid, or change its type with Tera Shards.

Pokemon's Tera Type Does Not Change Upon Evolution

Tera Type Tera Type After Evolution
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Normal Moves Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Normal Moves

The Tera type obtained when you hatch hatch an egg or catch a wild Pokemon is determined by the Species you caught it as. For example, Eevee is a Normal Type, but Sylveon is a Fairy Type, catching a wild Eevee and then evolving it will then give you a Normal Tera Type Sylveon. Inversely, breeding a Fairy Tera Type Sylveon will give you a Normal Tera Type Eevee.

How to Terastallize

Activate When Battling Pokemon

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV Terastallize

Press the R button when battling to terastallize your Pokemon, then choose an attack to finish your turn. Although Terastallizing your Pokemon will take place before the enemy Pokemon can attack, whether or not your Pokemon's attack goes first will be determined by its Speed.

Why Can’t I Terastallize?

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV Tera Orb
To Terastallize a Pokemon, you will need a special item called the Tera Orb. Once you use the item, it will lose its energy and will have to be recharged.

Recharge Tera Orbs through Pokemon Centers and Crystals

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV Pokemon Center Charged Tera Orb
You can go to a Pokemon Center or touch shining crystals with Terastal energy scattered around the Paldea region to recharge the Tera Orb.

Terastal Name Origin and Meaning

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Eevee Normal Tera Type
The name for the newly introduced Terastal phenomenon for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet seems to have roots in Tera and Crystal. The Crystal part of its name stems from the new crystalline appearances that Pokemon transform into after Terastallizing.

The Tera prefix follows the pattern of previous gimmicks being named after amount multipliers. After Mega-Evolutions and Gigantamax forms, Terastallized Pokemon is the next logical step! If the trend continues, the next mechanic may have the Peta- prefix!
