Dazzling Gleam
・ Hyper Voice ・ Thunderbolt ・ Ice Beam |
Wigglytuff has a niche in the Singles battle format as a special attacker thanks to its wide special movepool and Competitive, which raises its Special Attack by two stages if one of its stats are lowered. Assault Vest raises its Special Defense by 50% and, with full HP investment, allows it to switch into weak special attacks easily.
Dazzling Gleam is its main STAB move and, when boosted by Fairy Tera type, hits surprisingly hard and has wide coverage that hits the common Dark, Dragon, and Fighting-types in the current metagame such as Hydreigon and Breloom.
Hyper Voice is a strong secondary STAB move that is useful against common Substitute users such as Cyclizar and Veluza.
Its last two moves give it valuable "BoltBeam" coverage through Thunderbolt and Ice Beam, giving it full neutral coverage against all Types.
Fire Blast | Fire Blast can replace either Thunderbolt or Ice Beam to hit Steel-type for super effective damage at the cost of losing BoltBeam coverage. |

Nasty Plot
・ Dazzling Gleam ・ Hyper Voice ・ Fire Blast |
Wigglytuff has an easier time activating its Competitive Ability in Doubles due to the many Intimidate users that populate the battle format such as Arcanine and Salamence. It also has an easier time setting up with Nasty Plot with Redirection support from the likes of Amoonguss and Pachirisu.
Dazzling Gleam and Hyper Voice are its two main STAB moves and hits both opponents in Doubles. Fire Blast is its main coverage move, allowing it to threaten Steel-types such as Gholdengo.
This build has Fire Tera type to further boost the power of Fire Blast while also removing its usual weaknesses to Steel and Poison-types, while Sitrus Berry heals Wigglytuff 1/4 of its max HP when its HP is low.
Flamethrower | A weaker alternative to Fire Blast but has more reliable accuracy. |
---|
The following calculations take into account Wigglytuff's Offensive EV spread with a Modest Nature and the +2 Special Attack boost from Nasty Plot.
Damage Dealt by Wigglytuff |
|
---|---|
Item: Booster Energy | Dazzling Gleam 122-146 (65.2 - 78%) Guaranteed 2HKO |
157 HP|174 Sp.Def Item:
Heavy-Duty Boots
Defensive EV Investment: HP 252 | Sp.Def 252 (Calm) |
Hyper Voice 66-78 (42 - 49.6%) Guaranteed 3HKO |
Item: Leftovers | Fire Blast 222-262 (114.4 - 135%) Guaranteed OHKO |
Wigglytuff's wide special movepool means it's very difficult to predict what moves it has until it actually starts attacking. This makes it a great lead, especially with Assault Vest, as it can hit the weaker Special Defense of most defensive leads.
Access to the Competitive Ability makes it a great choice as bulky attacker in Doubles due to how common Intimidate is in the battle format. This gives Wigglytuff a +2 Special Attack boost that it can further boost with Nasty Plot and allows it to KO any Pokemon that doesn't resist its STAB and coverage moves.
In Singles, Wigglytuff is best used in balanced teams that can provide it support with its utility moves as well as cover its weaknesses.
In Doubles, it's best used in more offensive team compositions that can complement it through coverage moves and offensive synergy.
Lead Support | Special Attacker | Physical Attacker |
---|---|---|
Squawkabilly | Wigglytuff | Slither Wing |
Squawkabilly's main role is to provide Intimidate support while setting up Tailwind and then lowering the target's offenses further with Parting Shot as it switches to Wigglytuff. The Speed boost coupled with the offense drops makes it easier for Wigglytuff to stay on the field and deal damage with its moves.
Slither Wing serves as this team's physical attacker and also appreciates Tailwind and Parting Shot support, complementing Wigglytuff's special coverage with strong Bug and Fighting-type STAB.
Bulky Attacker | Redirection Support |
---|---|
Wigglytuff | Amoonguss |
Physical Attacker | Offensive Pivot |
Gallade | Skeledirge |
Wigglytuff leads this team alongside Amoonguss so that it can get a Competitive boost from opposing Intimidate users. With Rage Powder support from Amoonguss, Wigglytuff can set up with Nasty Plot so that it can fire boosted Dazzling Gleam and Hyper Voice.
Gallade serves as this team's physical attacker and rounds off coverage by providing Psychic and Fighting STAB boosted by its Sharpness Ability. Skeledirge serves as this team's offensive pivot and is a great check against opposing setup sweepers thanks to its Unaware Ability.
Wigglytuff's high HP stat is offset by its relatively low physical bulk, which makes it easy to check with powerful physical attackers that can take advantage of its Poison and Steel-type weaknesses.
