Mass Outbreaks Guide: How to Shiny Hunt at Mass Outbreaks

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Shiny Swablu in Outbreak.png

Mass Outbreaks indicate an unusually large amount of that Pokemon in an area. Read on to learn how to check for Mass Outbreaks, the meaning of Mass Outbreak messages, how to hunt for Shiny Pokemon, and Shiny Odds of appearing in Mass Outbreaks in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV).

Mass Outbreak Shiny Hunting and Odds

Mass Outbreaks Help Increase Odds of Shiny Pokemon

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Battle Shiny Swablu in Outbreak.png

As you defeat or catch more of the same Pokemon in a Mass Outbreak, the odds of finding a Shiny Pokemon among them increases.

Conditions Base Odds Shiny Charm Sparkling Power Sandwich Lv. 3 Shiny Charm
+
Sparkling Power Sandwich Lv. 3
30-59 cleared 1/2048 1/1024 1/819 1/585
60 or more cleared 1/1365 1/819 1/683 1/512

Make use of items like the Shiny Charm or a Sparkling Power Sandwich to further increase your odds of finding a Shiny Pokemon. Using both items is the best method, as it cuts down your odds of finding a Shiny Pokemon from 1/2048 and 1/1365 to 1/585 and 1/512 respectively.

Shiny Hunting Guide and Shiny Odds

"Let's Go" is Very Useful in Hunting Shiny Pokemon

Observe that Miraidon doesn't attack the Shiny but will attack non-shinies.

If you need to defeat the same Pokemon at a faster rate, you can use the Let's Go feature to let your Pokemon out and auto-battle wild Pokemon on their own.

The great thing about this is that once the Shiny Pokemon appears, your Pokemon will actively avoid fighting it. This gives you the best chance to catch the Shiny Pokemon without the risk of making it instantly faint.

How to Auto Battle and Evolve Pokemon

Having a Picnic Can Force Spawn Shiny Pokemon

Observe a new set of Swablu will respawn after the Picnic, spawning a shiny near the end of this clip.

Aside from rerolling the wild Pokemon in the vicinity, holding a picnic at the site of a Mass Outbreak can also force spawn a Shiny Pokemon.

The method is to first defeat 60 of the same Pokemon you want to get a shiny version of. This should be easy enough with the Let's Go feature. Once that's done, lay down a picnic table, and pick it up back again. This should both reset the spawn in the area and, hopefully, make that Shiny Pokemon appear.

Again, use items like the Shiny Charm and Sparkling Power Sandwich to increase your odds of finding a Shiny Pokemon.

How to Force Respawn Wild Pokemon

How to Reset Mass Outbreaks

You Can Reset Mass Outbreak Pokemon by Having a Picnic

Force Respawning Pokemon During the Picnic - Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV)

Putting down a picnic table clears all wild Pokemon in the vicinity. This will in effect "reroll" any wild Pokemon currently in a Mass Outbreak and potentially replace them with others.

This also affects the appearance of Shiny Pokemon, which we will discuss in the next section below.

How to Find Mass Outbreaks

Look For Pokemon Icons With a Red Glowing Symbol Behind Them

Pokemon Mass Outbreak Icon - Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV)

While exploring Paldea, you might notice Pokemon icons popping up on your map. This means that those Pokemon are available in the area, and you might be able to catch them!

But to find Mass Outbreaks, check if you see any Pokemon icons with a red glowing symbol just behind them. This means that a Mass Outbreak of that specific Pokemon is occurring in that area.

Question Mark on Map Indicates Unregistered Pokemon

Mass Outbreaks of Unregistered Pokemon - Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV)

Sometimes, you will find question marks on the map with glowing red symbols behind them. These indicate Mass Outbreaks of a specific Pokemon, but it is not registered in your Pokedex. You can find out what Pokemon it is by going to the area and checking it out.

What to Do During Mass Outbreaks

Catch the Pokemon You Want

A Psyduck in the Pokemon Team - Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

When there's a Mass Outbreak of a certain Pokemon in the area, your chances of running into it are higher than usual. This is the perfect chance to catch that Psyduck or that Paldean Wooper you might have been looking for.

Farm Materials and Experience Points

Psyduck Down Item - Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV)

Otherwise, if you already have that Pokemon, then a Mass Outbreak is the perfect chance to farm materials to make TMs with. If you have a Pokemon in your team that has a type advantage over wild Pokemon that are on a Mass Outbreak, then it's also a great time to farm experience points.

If there are loads of wild Pokemon in the same place, you might want to use the Let's Go! feature to have your Pokemon fight them automatically and rake in a lot of experience points quickly.

How to Farm EXP Fast

Let's Go Does Not Increase EVs

While it would have been nice to allow for Let's Go's auto-battle feature to help with EV training, it might be for the better that Pokemon defeated from Let's Go do not yield EVs. Whether you have the Pokemon as your Lead Pokemon, or as a different Pokemon in the party, they will not receive EVs if you are clearing Pokemon with the Let's Go feature.
