Wo-Chien's Tablets of Ruin Ability lowers the Attack stat of other Pokemon by 25% and allows it to function as a physical wall and defensive pivot, with it is dual typing giving it key resistances to Ground, Ghost, Water, Grass, Electric, and Dark-type moves.
Since this build relies on Leech Seed, Giga Drain, and Leftovers for recovery, Protect is essential to stall out turns and allow Wo-Chien to passively recover HP.
Foul Play allows Wo-Chien to use its opponent's Attack stat against them, potentially doing big damage with this Dark-type STAB attack.
A Fairy Tera is used because it is one of the strongest defensive typings in the game.
Ruination | A great alternative to Foul Play that allows Wo-Chien to lower the target's current HP by 50%. |
---|---|
Knock Off | Can replace Foul Play to give Wo-Chien utility against other defensive Pokemon that rely on their item for their build. If this move is used, Wo-Chien should be an Impish nature so that its Attack stat isn't lowered. |

・ Giga Drain ・ Snarl ・ Protect |
Wo-Chien's dual Dark and Grass-typing makes it a great check to common special attackers, particularly Ghost and Water-types such as Gholdengo and Empoleon. While not as physically bulky as the first build, it can still shrug off resisted physical attacks thanks to its Tablets of Ruin Ability.
Since this build relies on Leech Seed, Giga Drain, and Leftovers for recovery, Protect is essential to stall out turns and allow Wo-Chien to passively recover HP.
Snarl allows Wo-Chien to reduce its opponent's Special Attack stat, making it harder for them to knock out Wo-Chien.
A Fairy Tera is used because it is one of the strongest defensive typings in the game.
Ruination | A great alternative to Snarl that allows Wo-Chien to lower the target's current HP by 50%. |
---|---|
Knock Off | Can replace Snarl to give Wo-Chien utility against other defensive Pokemon that rely on their item for their build. If this move is used, Wo-Chien should be a Careful nature so that its Attack stat isn't lowered. |
The following calculations take into account Wo-Chien's Defensive EV spread.

Leech Seed
・ Protect ・ Ruination ・ Pollen Puff |
Wo-Chien's great mixed bulk and Tablets of Ruin boosting its Defense (or more accurately, reducing the Attack Stat of every other Pokemon in play) make it a great utility and support Pokemon in Doubles. It's best paired with physical walls since Tablets of Ruins will also help them stay on the field longer
Leech Seed is a great utility move that provides great residual damage to opposing Pokemon and, when used alongside Protect, gives Wo-Chien a semi-reliable form of recovery.
Ruination is a reliable way to take out half of the opponent's HP and set the opponent up for KO's later in the game, while Pollen Puff can deal good damage to opposing Wo-Chien, as well as being a good option to heal Wo-Chien's partners.
This build has Poison Tera typing and is used defensively when facing against particularly powerful Pokemon that can take advantage of its weaknesses. Poison Tera also helps Wo-Chien resist common Fairy-type attacks.
Knock Off | Can replace Foul Play and allows Wo-Chien to remove held items from opposing Pokemon. |
---|---|
Stun Spore | Can replace Protect but has shaky accuracy and makes it more difficult for Wo-Chien to stall for health. |
The following calculations take into account Wo-Chien's Defensive EV spread and the 25% Defense boost from Tablets of Ruin.
Damage Received by Wo-Chien |
|

Item:
Lum Berry
|
Fire Fang 92-110 (47.9 - 57.2%) 91% Chance of 2-Hit KO |
Item:
Leftovers
|
Shadow Ball 54-65 (28.1 - 33.8%) 0.7 chance of 3-Hit KO |
Item: Leftovers | Torch Song 98-116 (51 - 60.4%) Guaranteed 2-Hit KO |
Wo-Chien's Tablets of Ruin Ability lowers the opposing Pokemon's Attack stat by 25%, making the Ruinous Pokemon a bulky defensive Pokemon that can run either a full physical, special, or even mixed defensive sets.
This gives Wo-Chien plenty of build options while also making it difficult for opposing players to read. Use this unpredictability to your advantage!
Tablets of Ruin also affects Wo-Chien's ally Pokemon, which means it is only safe to pair it with Special Attackers and Special-based defensive Pokemon.
While this slightly restricts its viability in Doubles, its sheer bulk makes it an attractive choice for defensive pivot and support Pokemon in Special-based offensive teams.
In Singles, Wo-Chien is easy to fit into almost any team composition that requires a defensive pivot. In Doubles, it is best used in team compositions with special attackers since Tablets of Ruin also affects Wo-Chien's partner Pokemon.
Offensive Lead | Defensive Pivot | Bulky Attacker |
---|---|---|
Gholdengo | Wo-Chien | Dondozo |
Gholdengo can be used to punish any weak leads on the opponent's side. Wo-Chien can be switched in to cover Gholdengo's Ghost, Dark, and Ground weaknesses, while Dondozo can be switched in to cover Gholdengo's Fire weakness.
Support / Trapper | Perish Song User / Special Attacker |
---|---|
Gothitelle | Flutter Mane |
Support / Tank | Support / Tank |
Ting-Lu | Wo-Chien |
Perish Trap benefits greatly from both Wo-Chien and Ting-Lu, who both lend their powerful signature Abilities to strengthening their team's defense. Having either of the two Treasures of Ruin can help Perish Trap succeed in scoring Perish Song KOs, thanks to their signature Abilities, but also their defensive toolkits.
Even with full Special Defense investment, Wo-Chien struggles to stay on the field against powerful special attackers that can take advantage of its rather common weaknesses.
Wo-Chien also lacks a recovery move apart from Leech Seed which means these attackers can simply attack Wo-Chien every turn until it is forced to switch out.
