What are Shiny-Locked Pokemon?

Pokemon that Cannot Be Shiny

Shiny-Locked Pokemon are Pokemon that have been programmed to never be shiny. This is often done to special Pokemon, potentially to make their Shiny forms even rarer.

Shiny versions of Shiny-Locked Pokemon are typically only released through distributions or Mystery Gifts. We'll be sure to let you know if there are any Shiny Distributions going on!

Are Starters Shiny Locked?

Starters Received from Director Clavell are Shiny-Locked

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - Gen 9 Starters

No shinies here.

While many players may enjoy soft-resetting at the start of the game in the hopes of getting a Shiny starter, like in Pokemon Legends: Arceus before it, that will not be possible for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly that accompany Director Clavell are programmed to never be shiny.

How to Get Shiny Starters

Breed Starters

Pokemon SV - Pokemon Egg Picnic

Don't lose heart if you still want a shiny Starter Pokemon! It is possible to breed for a Shiny Pokemon at the Picnic and hatch them from Eggs. Make use of the Masuda Method and the Shiny Charm to increase the chances of obtaining a shiny starter!

Story Encounter Pokemon

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - Story Encounter Pokemon
Pokemon that you encounter in a story cutscene such as your first wild Pokemon encounter with Lechonk in Poco Path and the decoy Tatsugiri in Casseroya Lake are Shiny Locked.

Legendary Pokemon

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - Koraidon and Miraidon

Koraidon and Miraidon early in game, and another in Area Zero can not be Shiny.

Other legendaries such as the Four Treasures of Ruin: Ting-Lu, Chien-Pao, Wo-Chien, and Chi-Yu are also Shiny Locked.

Legendaries do have shiny forms, and in recent games you generally receive them through events. As of writing, there are no Shiny Legendaries in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. If you do happen to see a Shiny Legendary Pokemon while playing online, then it is most likely to be modded.

Titan Pokemon

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - False Dragon Titan

The Titan Pokemon fought in the Path of Legends storyline are coded to not be Shiny. You can go back to the Titan's location and try to catch them, but if you're hoping for a Shiny, then it's best not to expect so.

However, while you will not get a shiny Titan Pokemon, you do have the chance to get it Shiny in its regular non-titan form in the wild.

NPC Trades

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet - In Game Trade

Pokemon that you get from trading with NPCs are all shiny locked. These include Galarian Meowth from Salvatore's quest line, Snom from the Cortondo NPC Trade, Wooper from the Cascarrafa NPC Trade and Haunter (Gengar) from the Levincia NPC Trade.

Soft resetting the game in hopes of getting a shiny Pokemon in return won't work.

If you want to get a Shiny version of the Pokemon the NPC has, we suggest breeding for it or finding it in the wild.

Use the Masuda Method and Shiny Charm to get shiny Pokemon from eggs and use Mass Outbreaks and Shiny Sandwiches to find shinies in the wild.

7-Star Raid Event Encounters

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet SV - Black Crystal Tera Raid

Pokemon from 7-Star Raids, such as the Unrivaled Charizard and Unrivaled Cinderace, have been shiny-locked thus far.

You may consider delaying catching it and holding off until you encounter the shiny since you are only limited to one catch. This would be a mistake however as these raids are shiny locked.

You are however able to breed for a Shiny provided the raid boss is not in the Undiscovered Egg Group.
