Wild Charge
・ Rock Blast ・ Body Press ・ Ice Punch |
Iron Thorns has access to a lot of Defensive and Offensive boosts with Quark Drive, Electric Seed, Electric Terrain and Sandstorm. With this EV spread, Iron Thorns is able to have its Defense boosted with Quark Drive making it even bulkier.
Wild Charge gets boosted in Electric Terrain and with an Electric Tera Type, Iron Thorns can boost this even further while also removing many of its weaknesses. Body Press is also an excellent attacking option which takes advantage of its greatly boosted Defense stat to deal large damage.
Dragon Tail | Forces the opponent to switch out after dealing damage. Can force out setup sweepers to reset stat changes, as well as bulky stallers that Iron Thorns does not have an answer to like Hippowdon. |
---|---|
Iron Defense | Makes Iron Thorns even bulkier, while increasing the power of its Body Press |
Stone Edge | High damage output with a boosted critical hit chance. This is offset by its lower accuracy. |

Moveset | ・
Dragon Dance
・ Wild Charge ・ Rock Blast ・ Ice Punch |
Thanks to Iron Thorn's respectable bulk, it's a great choice for a Dragon Dance setup sweeper with Quark Drive boosting its Attack stat even with a Jolly nature.
Wild Charge and Rock Blast are its main STAB moves and offer great neutral coverage, with the latter able to hit through substitutes, Focus Sash and Abilities like Disguise, Multi-Scale and Sturdy. Ice Punch rounds off its coverage move and allows Iron Thorns to threaten Ground-types like Hippowdon.
This build has the Electric Tera-type to further boost the power of its Electric-type STAB and remove its common weaknesses to Water, Fighting, Steel, and Grass-type moves. Lum Berry is the preferred held item to avoid its Attack getting cut in half by Will-O-Wisp.
Stone Edge | High damage output with a boosted critical hit chance. This is offset by its lower accuracy. |

Moveset | ・
Swords Dance
・ Tera Blast ・ Rock Slide ・ Wild Charge |
Iron Thorns is a great choice for Swords Dance setup sweeper in Doubles thanks to its great coverage with its main STAB moves. This build uses Fire Tera-type to protect it from burns, while also giving it a reliable STAB Fire-type Tera Blast.
Rock Slide is its other STAB move and hits both opponents in Doubles, while Wild Charge is a strong Electric-type that inflicts recoil damage.
Electric Seed is the preferred held item for this build, boosting Iron Thorns' Defense by one stage when Electric Terrain is present.
Thunder Punch | A weaker alternative to Wild Charge but does not inflict recoil damage. |
---|
Iron Thorns great natural bulk and the potential boosts it can get with its Quark Drive Ability make it a versatile setup sweeper in Singles.
It has the option to run either a Defensive attacker with Body Press or a straightforward sweeper with Dragon Dance, making it an unpredictable Pokemon to face.
With the right support, Iron Thorns is a great choice for main setup sweeper in Doubles. Its dual STAB gives it great neutral coverage, while Tera Fire-type allows it to overcome its usual checks and counters while also giving it immunity to burns.
Paradox Pokemon Builds for Competitive Battles and Tera Raids
Iron Thorns is easy to fit into teams but appreciates partners that can setup Electric Terrain so that it can get the relevant boosts in stats.
Lead Support | Physical Attacker | Special Attacker |
---|---|---|
Pincurchin | Iron Thorns | Gholdengo |
Pincurchin's main role is to setup Electric Terrain with its Electric Surge and set entry hazards like Spikes and Toxic Spikes. Once it's done setting up, use Memento to safely switch in Iron Throns while also lowering the opponent's Attack and Special Attack by two stages.
Gholdengo serves as this team's special attacker and offers great coverage with its Steel and Ghost-type STAB.
Special Attacker | Physical Attacker |
---|---|
Jolteon | Iron Thorns |
Redirection Support | Offensive Pivot |
Toedscruel | Salamence |
Thanks to Jolteon's high Speed stat, it can set up Electric Terrain so that Iron Thorns can get the Attack and Defense boost from Quark Drive and Electric Seed respectively.
Once it's done setting up terrain, it should Volt Switch to Toedscruel so that the Woodear Pokemon can assist Iron Thorns in setting up by using Rage Powder to redirect moves.
Salamence serves as this team's offensive pivot, switching in to provide Intimidate support as well as ease Iron Thorns' sweep by setting up Tailwind.
Iron Thorns is reliant on getting boosts from Quark Drive and Electric Seed, as well as setting up with its boosting moves. This makes it easy to wall with a defensive Pokemon with Unaware which ignores all of its stat boosts.
