Moveset Boomburst

Hurricane
U-turn

Noivern's high Speed stat and respectable Special Attack makes it a great Choice Specs user, with its Infiltrator Ability allowing its moves to ignore Reflect, Light Screen, Aurora Veil, and Substitute.

Boomburst is its strongest attack and becomes its main STAB move once it terastallizes into a Normal type. Draco Meteor is another strong STAB move but lowers Noivern's Special Attack by two stages, forcing it to switch out afterwards.

Hurricane is another strong STAB move that has perfect accuracy during Rain and also has a 30% chance to confuse the target. It's last move is U-Turn and allows it to pivot out of the battle if it faces a check or counter.

Other Viable Moves

Dragon Pulse A weaker alternative to Draco Meteor that does not lower Noivern's Special Attack.
Air Slash A weaker Flying-type STAB move, but has more reliable accuracy outside of Rain.
Heat Wave An alternative to U-turn that allows Noivern to hit Steel-types for super effective damage.

Key Damage Calculations

The following calculations take into account Noivern's Offensive EV spread with a Timid Nature and the damage boost from Choice Specs.

Held Item Heavy-Duty Boots
Moveset Tailwind
Roost
Super Fang
Heat Wave

Noivern's relatively shallow offensive movepool means it's better filling the role of lead support in Doubles, using Tailwind to double the Speed stat of its ally Pokemon for three turns. Roost allows it to heal off damage and remove its weakness to Rock and Ice-types.

Super Fang is its main utility move that deals 50% damage to the target's HP, cutting it in half and allows Noivern's allies to easily take them out. This move is very useful against defensive leads such as Arcanine and Amoonguss since the move ignores stat drops from Intimidate and defensive EV investment.

Heat Wave is its last move and hits both opposing Pokemon in Doubles and allows it to hit Steel-types like Gholdengo and Tinkaton.

This build has Tera Flying but is mostly used defensively since Noivern's main role is to set up Tailwind and support its team, while equipping it with Heavy-Duty Boots prevents Noivern from getting damaged by entry hazards like Stealth Rock.

Frisk is the best Ability for this support-focused Noivern, revealing the opposing Pokemon's held items once it switches in and allows you to better anticipate what build the opposing team has.

Other Viable Moves

Dragon Pulse An alternative STAB move to Heat Wave but only hits one Pokemon in the Doubles battle format.
Defog Can replace Heat Wave and allows Noivern to remove entry hazards and Reflect, Light Screen, and Aurora Veil.

How to Use Noivern Effectively

An Anti-Screens Attacker in Singles

Noivern's Infiltrator Ability and great Speed makes it a great Choice Specs user designed to check teams relying on dual screen support from Grimmsnarl. It's also one of the few Pokemon that can use Boomburst effectively, getting a STAB boost once it terastallizes into a Normal-type.

Tailwind Lead in Doubles

In Doubles, Noivern is best used as a lead support Pokemon that sets up Tailwind to double its team's Speed for three turns. Its Frisk Ability also allows it to scout the opposing team, revealing their held items and giving you a better idea what their potential builds are.

How to Build a Team with Noivern

In Singles, Noivern is best used in more offensive-oriented team compositions effectively filling the role of a wallbreaker against the opposing team that relies on the extra bulk from dual screens.

In Doubles, support Noivern can fit in almost all kinds of team compositions and greatly benefits any team that requires a Speed boost from Tailwind.

Sample Singles Team

Lead Attacker Rain Support Special Attacker
Palafin ImagePalafin Pelipper ImagePelipper Noivern ImageNoivern

This rain team leads with Palafin so that it can Flip Turn out and come in later in its Hero Mode. Switching to Pelipper ensures that it sets up Rain with its Drizzle Ability and can further support its team by setting up Tailwind.

Noivern's main role in this build is to provide strong special coverage with its STAB moves, with Hurricane getting perfect accuracy during rain. It is also the main Tera Pokemon, firing off powerful STAB Boomburst once it terastallizes into a Normal-type.

Sample Doubles Team

Lead Support Lead Attacker
Noivern ImageNoivern Garchomp ImageGarchomp
Redirection Support Special Attacker
Toedscruel ImageToedscruel Volcarona ImageVolcarona

Noivern's main role is to scout the opposing team with Frisk, and then setup Tailwind to support its team. Garchomp is a great lead partner for Noivern since it can freely use Earthquake without hitting Noivern.

After setting Tailwind, Noivern should alternate between using Roost to heal off damage and Super Fang to cut the opposing Pokemon's HP in half and make it easier for Garchomp and Volcarona to get KOs.

Toeadscruel serves as this team's redirection support, using Rage Powder to redirect attacks and Spore to put targets to sleep.

Counters for Noivern

Wear it Down with Repeated Attacks

Even with HP investment, Noivern has mediocre defenses and is easily worn down by repeated super effective attacks.
