Moveset | ・
Chilly Reception
・ Slack Off ・ Chilling Water ・ Psyshock |
Slowking's signature move Chilly Reception makes it a great secondary weather setter and pivot for dedicated Snow teams, with its dual-typing resisting Fighting, Fire, and Steel-type moves that Ice-types are weak to.
This move sets up snow on the field before switching out Slowking, and synergizes well with its Regenerator Ability. The Relaxed Nature ensures that it always moves last when setting up Snow so that it wins a weather war against another weather setter predicting a switch.
Slack Off allows Slowking to recover lost health, while Chilling Water lets it check physical attackers with a -1 Attack drop. Psychock is its last move and allows it to hit special walls like Chansey and Blissey on their weaker Defense stat.
This build has Water Tera type but is mostly used defensively to remove Slowking's weakness to Dark and Ghost-types. Since Slowking fills the role of a support Pokemon, terastallizing is best reserved for the team's attackers.
Surf | A stronger STAB move but lacks utility unlike Chilling Water. |
---|---|
Yawn | Can replace Psyshock and lets Slowking function as a phazer. |

Held Item | Mental Herb |
Moveset | ・
Chilly Reception
・ Icy Wind ・ Heal Pulse ・ Slack Off |
This build functions similar to Singles but is more support-oriented; while Slowking's main goal is to still set up snow with Chilly Reception, it can also lower the opposing team's Speed with Icy Wind or heal its ally with Heal Pulse.
Its last move is Slack Off, which allows it to recover lost health and stay on the field longer to support its teammates.
This build's preferred held item is Mental Herb which cures Slowking of Taunt. Since it's a single-use item, using this item also ensures that Slowking takes reduced damage from Knock Off from the likes of Iron Treads and Toedscruel.
Thunder Wave | Can replace Heal Pulse and allows Slowking to directly threaten fast physical setup sweepers. |
---|---|
Psychic | Can replace Heal Pulse and allows Slowking to directly threaten Amoonguss. |
Slowking's dual Water / Psychic typing and access to Chilly Reception make it the ideal secondary weather setter for dedicated snow teams.
It's a particularly great partner for Pokemon that can abuse the weather with their Abilities, such as Snow Cloak Froslass and Slush Rush Cetitan.
Slowking is best used on dedicated Snow teams to separate it from the similarly-typed Slowbro, with Chilly Reception being its main support move to boost the Defense of Ice-types by 50%.
Lead Setter | Defensive Pivot | Physical Attacker |
---|---|---|
Abomasnow | Slowking | Baxcalibur |
While Abomasnow is this team's main weather setter, it's bad type matchup against other weather setters such as Torkoal and Tyranitar mean it relies on Slowking to cover its many weaknesses and reset snow with Chilly Reception.
Baxcalibur is this team's main attacker, and with the 50% Defense boost from Snow, it can better handle physical attacks and setup with Swords Dance or Dragon Dance and deal boosted damage with its dual STAB moves.
Lead Support | Bulky Attacker |
---|---|
Slowking | Cetitan |
Special Attacker | Redirection Support |
Armarouge | Amoonguss |
Slowking once again fills the role of a weather setter with Chilly Reception to activate Cetitan's Slush Rush and give it a nice speed boost to outrun its usual checks.
On switch, Slowking should pivot to Amoonguss as they cover each other's weaknesses and also so that Mushroom Pokemon can provide redirection support with Rage Powder.
Armarouge is this team's special attacker and its Flash Fire Ability also makes it a great switch-in to opposing Fire-types that can threaten both Cetitan and Amoonguss.
Slowking's great bulk is overshadowed by its very common weaknesses to Grass, Bug, Dark, and Ghost-types due to its secondary Psychic-typing.
While it can remove this by terastallizing into a pure Water-type, this causes Slowking to lose some utility in Snow teams since it now can't check Fighting-types.
Take advantage of these common weaknesses to force out Slowking and keep the pressure up to prevent it from using Chilly Reception.
