Moveset | ・
Swords Dance
・ Close Combat ・ Brave Bird ・ Liquidation |
Flamigo's respectable Attack stat and access to Swords Dance lets it function as a great setup sweeper. Its Scrappy Ability also allows it to hit Ghost-types with its Fighting-type moves, making it a great check to Gholdengo.
Close Combat and Brave Bird are its main STAB moves that give it great neutral coverage, while Liquidation is a great Water-type coverage move that allows it to threaten bulky Ground and Fire-types such as Hippowdon and Skeledirge.
Throat Chop | A good alternative to Liquidation that has the secondary effect of preventing the target from using sound moves, but is generally redundant due to Scrappy. |
---|---|
Roost | Can replace Liquidation to offset the recoil damage from Brave Bird. |

Held Item | White Herb |
Moveset | ・
Close Combat
・ Brave Bird ・ Roost ・ Detect |
Flamigo's Costar Ability instantly copies its partner's stat changes once it switches in, making it a great partner for lead setup sweepers like Garchomp and Dondozo. White Herb restores negative stat changes, which prevents Flamigo from copying negative stat boosts and allows it to stay on the field against Intimidate users.
Brave Bird and Close Combat are its main STAB moves and offer great neutral coverage. Detect gives Flamigo a way to scout the opposing team and prevent it from getting hit by multi-target moves.
This build uses the Flying Tera type to further boost the damage of Brave Bird, while also removing its Fairy-type weakness.
Substitute | A good alternative to Detect that protects Flamigo from Will-O-Wisp and Thunder Wave. |
---|---|
Quick Guard | An alternative to Detect that allows Flamigo to protect it and its ally from priority moves. |
Flamigo's Scrappy Ability makes it a great setup sweeper since it's currently the only Fighting-type that can hit Gholdengo with a STAB super effective Close Combat.
Scrappy also means that it can rely solely on its STAB moves since Fighting and Flying give it great neutral coverage.
The following calculations are with full Attack investment and a Jolly Nature, and without a Swords Dance boost.
Damage Dealt by Flamigo |
|
---|---|
Close Combat 176-210 (90.7 - 108.2%) 50% Chance to OHKO |
|
Brave Bird 51-61 (32.4 - 38.8%) Guaranteed 3HKO |
|
Liquidation 90-106 (45.6 - 53.8%) 78-93 (39.5 - 47.2%) to 3HKO |
Once Flamigo switches in, it copies all of its partner's stat changes. This makes it a great partner for other physical setup sweepers, particularly bulky attackers, since it essentially functions as another setup sweeper without having to set up at all.
The following calculations are with full Attack investment with a Jolly nature and +3 Attack from Costar copying Dondozo's Commander and Order Up boosts.
Damage Dealt by Flamigo |
|
---|---|
Brave Bird 127-150 (80.8 - 95.5%) Guaranteed 2HKO |
|
Brave Bird 151-178 (70.2 - 82.7%) Guaranteed 2HKO |
|
Close Combat 135-159 (76.2 - 89.8%) Guaranteed 2HKO |
|
Close Combat 284-336 (137.1 - 162.3%) Guaranteed OHKO |
Flamigo is easy to fit in almost all types of team compositions, though it's important to build the team around it so that you can cover its weaknesses and shortcomings.
Lead Support | Physical Attacker | Special Attacker |
---|---|---|
Grimmsnarl | Flamigo | Gholdengo |
Flamigo's average defenses means it struggles setting up Swords Dance even against favorable type matchups since it's easy to wear down.
With Grimmsnarl setting up Reflect and Light Screen, as well as using Parting Shot to switch out, Flamigo will have an easier time setting up with Swords Dance and overpowering the opposing team with its STAB moves.
Gholdengo serves as this team's special attacker and has great synergy with Flamigo. It can switch in against Fairy-types and then hit them with STAB super effective Make it Rain.
Lead Support | Special Attacker |
---|---|
Grimmsnarl | Tatsugiri |
Physical Attacker | Physical Attacker |
Dondozo | Flamigo |
This is a standard offensive Doubles team featuring Dondozo and Flamigo, with Grimmsnarl providing dual screen support. Curly Form Tatsugiri is the preferred form for this setup, although the Stretchy Form is an option to give Flamigo an additional Speed boost when Dondozo uses Order Up.
1 | ・Setup Reflect and Light Screen with Grimmsnarl. ・Use Protect to safely activate Toxic Orb on Tatsugiri. |
---|---|
2 | ・Stall the opposing team with Grimmsnarl until Tatsugiri reaches critical health. Use Taunt to shut down opposing defensive Pokemon or wear them down with Foul Play. |
3 | ・Once Tatsugiri is at sufficiently low health, use Parting Shot to switch Grimmsnarl out with Dondozo which will get the Commander boost from Tatsugiri. ・While Tatsugiri is still alive, use Order Up to give Dondozo an Attack or Speed increase. Note: At sufficiently low health, the poison status will cause Tatsugiri to faint while inside Dondozo's mouth, allowing you to switch in another Pokemon on the next turn. |
4 | ・Once Tatsugiri faints, switch in Flamigo who will get all of Dondozo's stat boosts with its Costar Ability. |
Despite its offensive presence, Flamigo's average Speed stat holds it back as a sweeper since many Pokemon can outspeed it even with a Jolly Nature.
Its lackluster defensive stats, as well as its rather common weaknesses, means it's also easy to KO with the right moves.
