Making a Nickname for Your Pokemon - Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV)

The Name Rater is no longer present in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (SV). But now you can change your Pokemon's nickname on your own! Read on to learn how to rename your Pokemon, and what kinds of Pokemon you won't be able to rename.

No, but You Can Change Your Pokemon’s Nickname

Changing Your Pokemon

The Name Rater, an NPC that rates your Pokemon's name and allows you to rename them in previous games, is no longer present in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

Instead, players themselves can change the nicknames of their Pokemon through their "Summary" page.

How To Change Your Pokemon’s Nickname

How to Give Nicknames to Pokemon
1 Changing Your Pokemon
Select the Pokemon you want to give a nickname or change the nickname of in the Pokemon Menu, and select 'Check Summary'.
2 Changing Your Pokemon
In the Summary Menu, press the 'X Button'. Once the nickname screen comes up, enter the name you prefer for your Pokemon.
Make sure to double-check for any typos or other mistakes.
3 Changing Your Pokemon
Your Pokemon now has a new nickname.

If you want to change the nicknames of Pokemon you caught by yourself, you can rename them as many times as you want.

How to Complete the Pokedex and Rewards

Traded Pokemon Can Be Given Nicknames

Pokemon you've obtained either through Link Trading or Suprirse Trading can be renamed as long as they don't have a nickname already.

Also remember, once you've nicknamed your traded Pokemon, you won't be able to change its nickname again. So double-check before confirming your traded Pokemon's nickname.

If you got a Pokemon through the Mystery Gift feature, you won't be able to give them a name at all. So make sure you'll be okay with using Pokemon obtained through Mystery Gifts even if you can't personalize them.
